  • In this video, I am recording an oboe for the reprise for "Every Day For The Pay". I'm at Q Studios in Sydney which is part of the Australian Institute of Music. In this video, I explain the set up, microphones used positioning, and general approach to recording an oboe in the studio.
I'm using a Rode K2 microphone about 3 feet away, initially in cardoid pattern. Then when I get that position right, I slowly wind in more room ambience by turning the dial on the micophones power supply. In this way I move from cardoid to Omni. The other mic I am using is a Neumann KM183 which is positioned about 3 metres away. This mic is already an omni, so it picks up sound from all directions.
The oboe player Liz Nurthern explains the workings of the oboe.
I also explain the basic recording process including headphone monitoring and mic set up. We then see and hear the sound by itself followed by its context within the song itself.
The song was written by Jarrod Murphy and forms part of a concept album called "Dead At The Desk". This channel features a number of videos showing the making of the album with lots more to follow.
