Just pulled out my Grundig Yacht Boy 400 PE again, only to see you upload! Sadly couldn’t receive any shortwave signals at my new house but I’ll keep trying!
Bands have been "stinko" last couple of days. I did a scan this afternoon and found one SWBC station and one ham on 20 meters. Tried listening to RNZ and IfrikyaFM last night and both were very poor copy. Don't give up!
Love my 990, excellent selectivity, sensitivity and sound, and I actually use the SD card to play some music or podcasts on occasion. It will also Bluetooth connect to my phone and take calls (has built in mic). I find it a nice handy little feature.
thanks Christopher, I think I was a little harsh about the SD card - I wont use it but I know its useful for some. Bluetooth also for sending online stations from your phone etc.. great radio
The Tecsun PL-330 also allows using the external antenna on MW/LW (it's a well-known hidden feature), but the PL-990 and the PL-330 are the only two currently-manufactured portable radios I know of where the external antenna can be used. And here's another huge hint: add an earth ground to the shield lead and reception will skyrocket, especially on LW.
Yes! I've had my PL-990X for a few weeks now and am very pleased with it. I was surprised at how well it does on medium wave. As you said, the ability to use an external antenna with the ferrite loopstick disconnected is a fantastic feature and makes such a difference. However, I have also found that just switching to the telescopic whip on medium wave (press and hold "3") gives fantastic reception and eliminates so much noise. I'm in a rural area so going outside maybe 15 or 20 meters from the house avoids so much electrical hash. And, the same applies to longwave. I've been DXing NDBs early in the morning, sitting outside with the reel antenna hooked up in a tree branch. Looking forward to more videos.
I got my PL-990 probably 2 years ago. It replaces my 8-band Panasonic bought new in 1975, almost 40 years old and still working. Went a few years without a radio and got the PL-990. Only a fraction of the size of the Panasonic and a ton cheaper, the Panasonic was $150 in 1975. I think the internal build quality, have not actually opened, is better. Perhaps glass epoxy boards rather than the common brown phenolic boards. Also the use of the 18650 battery gives good runtime and is readily available. The same battery used in my flashlights. The OEM battery with its built in charger, i do not like. Heat from the internal charger will degrade the battery. Always charge all my batts using separate chargers and charge at a slow rate. Extra batts are a must, IMO.
I just purchased the same radio. Are you connecting an outside antenna to this unit? I currently use the Tecsun AN+48x and AN-03L Compact with some success. Thanks
The PL 990x has no RDS on FM what i cant understand...the Xhdata d 808 has RDS and airband on top for 1/3 of the price from the PL 990x. Actually i want buy the 990x but im not sure if that's a upgrade to the D 808 .What do you think?Good deal or waisting money? I'm just using AM with 30m wire antenna
Agree 100% about the SD card, should have been for recording. Unless it's for listening recordings from some other device, such as Tecsun Q3 (included in the Tecsun PL 990x kit) Other than that, I'm pretty excited about this
Thank you so much for this video. I too just received a Tecsun PL990 and really enjoy the AM and FM stations in my area. I now want to try listening to shortwave stations. I am currently using an MLA-30+ loop antenna. But, would a long-wire antenna be a benefit, maybe a straight 50 foot, or possibly an L-shaped 100 foot antenna? Any recommendations for a long-wire? Thank you.
a very good solid radio overall, pity there's no RDS on FM that you'd have on the D-808, otherwise it would make an excellent travel radio. Tecsun don't put RDS into any of their radios which is a bit of a head scratcher considering its' been around 30 years. Couple of other handy features the main one for me being the external antenna connection for MW and LW as well as SW, very few radios have that, even the PL-880 doesn't have that, its restricted to SW.
Great video Peter! I love the look of this; the size makes it more appealing too

Another radio that supports an external antenna on all bands is the new Qodosen RD-286. I have one on order.

Thanks for that snapshot of your radio listening day, good to hear from you William
@@LONGINTHETOOTHtv Thanks! I think I accidentally gave this a "thumbs down" by mistake and have since corrected that!

Can one add an external antenna into a car then connect it to this radio to listen to a short wave channel while driving?
Nice radio Peter thanks for the review 👍
Hi R.A.D.I.O thanks for taking the trouble to comment
At 1:38 -- SWL and peanut butter go well together.😁

Love your Beautiful Dog.
