I just pulled the trigger and ordered myself one of these! This will be my first real, new-age radio, as I've just been toying around up until now with my dad's old 1950's Zenith Trans-Oceanic. Enjoying all of your video's and am very happy to have come across your excellent material!
Very good videos... Question, I guess there is two versions of this radio the PL-990x and the PL-990. I was looking on Amazon and they only have the PL-990 for sale. Should I wait and try to find the PL-990X? thanks
Hey Gilles.. I received my pl-990x from anoco last week. April 12/23..Just wondering what firmware version yours is as i would like to now if mine is updated. Thanks Glenn
I just had my PL-990x delivered from anon-co a few days ago. I would also like to know how to find what firmware I have. The sticker under the flip stand on the back of mine has a 1/2023 date on it. What's the build date of yours?
There is no audio quality reduction. You’ve never used a real sync radio. Only Tecsun which is junk with that. Even the 660 680 aren’t that good compared to a radio with real sync.
yes there is ... Sync reduces the size of the bandwith and I have heard Sony sync... all I can say ...is it can help yes...but it is somewhat over rated
@@OfficialSWLchannel No it doesn't that's a factor of the radio setup not the Synchronous detector and it does make huge difference, far from over rated. It's easy to talk down at things from a position higher up like living where the signals are strong and you can still receive things regardless even with improper antenna setup like how you leave the longwires in the coil when clipped to the radio and next to apartment noise. I used to live in the northeast before moving west and can tell you It's much different when you have to live around more difficult DX that requires you to develop skills beyond that of an appliance operator.
@@OfficialSWLchannel There is no reason why SD (synchronous demodulation) would reduce bandwidth, in principle these are independent from each other. It's a choice of implementation whether bandwidth reduction is applied in conjunction with sync. I've used the Sony SW-77 for years and sync worked really well if signals weren't too weak; my home-built radio uses SD and it's a real boon to combat selective fading coupled with faithful music reproduction. Granted, these days receivers can be so stable and accurately tuneable that AM reception is perfectly feasible without synchronization to the carrier. The ELAD S2 and DUOr I have, do a great job here.

Thanks for your thorough assessment of the performance and features of this radio. I respect your extensive experience and expertise.
Just wanna say "Thank you!" for all the videos, giving me a good idea what this radio is about.
debating if i should upgrade from the 660
I just bought one of these.. I'm surprised by how small it is. It looks huge in your videos.
LOVE THE REVIEWS FROM SOMEONE IN THE KNOW~!
Sold out on Anon-co.com, more due at end of the month. I got one of the last batch, great radio. Beautiful sound on FM/ Bluetooth.

the X is the export version, it has a different power adapter
I gather the band ranges and FM tuning steps are slightly different in the 990 when the MW steps are set to 9 Khz to suit regional differences.
The tuning steps can be changed from 9 to 10 kHz
Would you justify paying $140 more for this radio versus the Tecsun 680?? Just going by your reviews, I can't see it.
that's because you don't see why... then the 680 is fine ... if you did you would now yes it is , it's a question of understanding the details

No, it is not perfect, but it is still a good radio.
