You should have heard him as a kid playing guitar at his house. I grew up with Greg and everytime he played in the summer it was a real learning moment knowing that someday he would really blow us away. His music echoed throughout the neighborhood known as Sheritan Lawns and we couldn't believe it was coming from this kid. Congrats Greg on all your accomplishments.
He is a very large human being with enormous hands, so I get the dexterity with his left, but you would think those same long fingers would work against him with his right hand. His technique, his guitar vocabulary, his tone, his persona and presence is undeniable. I don’t like to quantify guitar players (cause I’m one of them), but there’s an argument to be made that Greg may be the greatest living player today. Either that or he’s a friggin alien. And that venue .... Yikes!
The way Greg talks and behaves reminds me a lot of people like Tommy Emmanuel, Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins. Always kind and polite. Must be something about the guitar genius that make them this way! By the way great tips about chicken pick!
my friend saw the G3 show with Greg, Jeff Beck & Eric Johnson. he was close enough to see what was going on in the wings. he told me when Greg played, JB's crew was mesmerized. a former bandmate's brother was Greg's drummer in the Tone controls. a friend & former employer owned a Mongolian BBQ restaurant in NE Wisconsin where Greg played, & I got 2 hang with him after bar closing. I can die happy knowing I actually shook hands with the GristleMaster.
You and your Brother were lucky. I also was in High School from 66' to 69'. I saw a lot of incredible Live music by those Great Bands of that era. I saw Roy Buchanan Live several times in the early 70's. He was Amazing, LIVE......
This was a real eye-opener! And he's such a good guy on top of everything else. Myself and a friend used to go to this Chinese restaurant down the street from me that was open in the afternoons, and this one time we sat down, ordered the usual, finished our meals and both realised that neither of us had brought our wallets or any cash! We explained the situation to the owner, and fortunately they were nice enough to let us come in and pay for it the next day, since they knew we were regulars. I didn't meet Greg or anything, but if he had been there I think he would have been really cool and probably chatted to us for a bit.
What the heck is the story of eating Chinese food got to do all with anything. Maybe if Jimi had been there he would have told you about something too. Or not. Lord’a mighty. Quit smoking it before you try to act like you’ve got a brain. A’hua A’ha Ah Duh!
Imagine being a spot-on drummer that can play nearly any style flawlessly and pretty much pick who to play with but you get called in by Greg Koch - a guy that can pick any drummer in the world. And, he's your dad to boot. Amazing.
Alexei, The drummer may be Greg's son. I know his son has played with him in the past and this may be one of those occasions. Either way, this drummer is awesome, as is Greg.
Had the pleasure of seeing Greg in Durban, South Africa. Superlative!! If he ever decided to have a rest from music (heaven forbid!) he could earn a fortune doing stand-up comedy!!
He is good.....he's obviously been playing for years.....he's spent hours trying new things and trying to figure out how others have done it......as the others have done before him.....was a cool video imho.....👍👍
It’s obvious you know the guitar. Lots of techniques. But why didn’t you put a little volume on it so someone could hear what you were playing. Of course an airport parking lot is kinda of strange place for a gig. I would like to hear you in a club some time! Thanks for the lessons! Great!
Shiiiitt.... he's so good ! I totally miss chicken picking style, I should practice it in the past but I were too much focused on other styles so I missed the train... too late. I could start with Greg's suggestions any way, any other suggestion to begin ?
Fact. The first time I ever saw Koch was an interview he did with PRS where he called Brent Mason a "plectrum-wielding prestidigitator of the highest order," and then said some other guy was abusing the demo guitar like a farm animal. PRS's reaction to the onslaught was pretty funny. ruclips.net/video/OitFD5SU9kw/видео.html
JopesTV it seems if anyone dislikes anything these days it's because they're jealous. What if people just don't like it..? Is it not OK anymore to have differing tastes..?
Paul Rose - of course its OK. I just think DH's remarks were childish. 1- its a clinic...you gotta rattle on a bit to engage the crowd. 2- clothes? I've never seen any artist give a clinic in formal attire, except in symphony/classical clinics & 3- I had the honor of meeting Greg years ago (when he was with the Tone Controls) & got to hang with the band after a gig in Appleton, WI. Jealous? I sure as hell can't hold a candle to Greg's technique, but to diss him because of that shows immaturity, poor self-respect or the sadly increasing number of intolerant "musicians" out there.
Greg is great technically and I like his patter. But what a huge gulf between musical genius and technicality. Knopfler came up with it all and so did Hendrix and the other legends. Koch is in a garage getting video recorded on a phone for fucks sake! Who cares.
Actually Knopfler was emulating the great country pickers, and Hendrix also stood on the shoulders of previous players-who cares? You aren't going to gain much ground with that attitude.

I have literally never seen this guy do anything less than stellar! Proud to be from milwaukee as well!
Greg is beyond great. Funny guy and such a fantastic player. One of the best ever.

This guy can really teach !
Ain't that right? A lot of times you see great players struggle to explain their technique/methods of playing. This guy was spot on.

Hey Steve - Gregory is a monster of the tele... Met him in Brisbane and he is a very impressive musician and human...

Best guitar vid I've seen in a while. Thank you

Kid is a monster drummer too. In the pocket.
Alexei,
The drummer may be Greg's son. I know his son has played with him in the past and this may be one of those occasions. Either way, this drummer is awesome, as is Greg.
Would have blown minds if he played Cliffs of Dover instead of the tune he played. HAHAHA
He is the best guitar player, and a great comedian to boot.
I love this guy!

This man is a Genius
Greg is as good as the best. He is awesome.
Great job guys
What's that enormous brown amp behind him? Looks like a Fender acoustic Quad Reverb.
Probably an early 60's Concert

And? If you had it ?
Paired with a Homestead amp on the other side...majorly drool-worthy

Chicken Pickin就是模仿阿匹婆趕火雞的聲音
Anyone else find this opening story reminiscent of Frank Zappa's Cheapnis? "Ladies and Gentlemen,.....do you like monster movies?...."
