I love the battle-hardened Brutus: voice deep and rough from years of shouting orders, body made leaner and harder, hair pulled back so as to always be ready for combat.
People throw around “we don’t deserve you” a lot. But Buttress we truly don’t. The things you make are so so deeply unparalleled and good. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. This is remarkable.
I was wondering why Buttress's voice sounded so different from the one she used in Brutus part I... Then I remembered that her character is supposed to be king at this moment and so, she has to act and appear more masculine in order to reign over this patriarchal society which is unable to see strength in womanhood. Most of Buttress songs have a feminist message attached to them, this one doesn't seems to break the rule, especially with the representation of women getting oppressed by men throughout the video clip.
I know it is not necessarily clear from the lyrics or video, but following from the real-life Brutus I am actually not king, but presiding over an army in the civil war following Caesar’s death - in this case, the female army. I think many history scholars and fans of the play would likely find it contentious that I said “the people call me Rex”, but as one of the themes in the play is the tumultuous relationship both Caesar and Brutus have with ideas of power and how best to rule the people of Rome, I feel it is not out of line to play with that. Thank you so much for watching!
The layers of history, biblical references, the delicate balance between rage and love for humanity thrown for a spin-- Fury overpowering exhaustion, this awareness of What Is To Be Done against fascism, the danger of self-aggrandizing narratives, falling on them anyway because there's an actual possibility you'll have to fight for your life while fighting for a better world (even for those who hate you)... Buttress, I got dopamine chills at the sight of the sickle and hammer. A+++ and excellent if listened to straight after the first one.
thank you everyone for watching! I have finally begun my descent down the mountain, and I can’t wait to share everything else I have been working on with you… see you soon! P.S. lyrics are included in the description as well as in the closed captions! I've just added them to rapgenius as well: genius.com/The-buttress-rex-brutus-ii-lyrics
On a different note: I love the quote at the end. It demands the reader to do what is necessary despite all costs, to never comply. It adds so much to the outcome of the battle portrayed. Brutus would rather kill herself and all other women who are being slayed on the battlefield with a bomb instead of telling the women to comply and to do what men demand of them. I think about that all the time
in my mind, the most important part of the bombing is not that Brutus is taking out herself and all the women, but the enemy as well. unlike the real-life Brutus, her suicide is an act of war, not of resignation. we may lose the battle, but we will die trying to win the war!!! ⚔
I keep trying to pick this apart to find the meaning so these are my current thoughts, Brutus justifies Caesar's death because he believes Caesar did not care about the people like he did, he also downplays his own ambitions a bit, for the good of the people and all that. "Cassius is worse than me because he did not lose a brother, friend, teacher, etc.." He believes if he takes Caesar's place he can change things, but once Brutus comes into power he can't change the way things are. The people call him lazy but what can he do to fix the conflict? The only thing he can think of that's left is the nuclear option, men and women are too different and they have to be apart. Andrea Dworkin quote at the end is interesting because she believed that hetero s*x under a patriarchal society was more about power, having women submit to men, so I wonder if it's about the society then? Brutus realizes at the end that the problem is not just with who is in charge, it's the system, because even when Brutus comes into power they are helpless and can only watch as their people tear each other apart. "Here I go now like Samson among the Philistines," Samson gets his strength one last time to tear down the pillars, killing himself along with the Philistines, so I assume this is meant to say either that Brutus is taking himself out with all the men or he's taking himself out and tearing down the pillars of the patriarchy? At the end you see Brutus in the cyclops, maybe to represent his hubris? I feel like there are a lot of different meanings you can get out of this, and art is subjective so all the meaning could be right or wrong yknow :^) pls other ppl comment ur theories cause this is driving me nuts
This is one of the most earth shattering come backs. Buttress writes as if she is guided by the same muse that Samuel Coleridge, John Gower, and Dante convened with. She is a visionary of transcendental phenomenology.
Her facial expressions alone are high art. The fear in her forehead but the rage in her eyes and The sadness and the calmness all at fucking once. I don't know how she does it. The still from Brutus, as well. Just amazing.
i love you so much. i'm a latin/classics student and i'm obsessed with the layers and layers of reference and metaphor in your songs, truly incredible.
The pure raw RAGE sent shivers down my spine. Couldn’t think of any song topping the raw emotion in Brutus, yet you killed it once again!! You’re phenomenal, Buttress!! ❤
i've just added a bunch of annotations on the rapgenius page for this song to help anyone interested make sense of all the references. thanks to all who are engaging with the song and its potential meaning! genius.com/The-buttress-rex-brutus-ii-lyrics?react=1
So many of the references in this and Brutus go over my head, but the raw emotion in them really speaks to me. I'd love to watch an analysis video on them!
After hearing this and the first Brutus track, I am convinced that the world NEEDS a broadway production of Julius Caesar in the style of Hamilton, and I think The Buttress is the creative entity that is capable of bringing that entire vision to life. Until it happens, I will assume it's wishful thinking and continue to be happy that we at least have these two amazing pieces of art.
i only found brutus around the time this was released, and when i tell you these two songs have absolutely changed my brain chemistry, it's an understatement. i cant go one day without thinking about the both of them lmao
i was delirious off no sleep when i first responded, i didnt really know what to say, but this comment really touched me when i first read it and made me tear up a bit. it is hard, but we have each other. this song is for women - all our sisters around the world. the battle is raging and who knows if we will be successful, but if we are going to lose the battle then at least we are going to die trying to win the war. stay strong soldiers 🔥
I love how at the end, when the singing is already over, you can very faintly hear the laughter and italian singing that Brutus part one is famous for. Even though Brutus has changed so much over the years, they still hold some of their old self. Perhaps even the part percieved as wicked that killed Ceaser.
Oh my god? This is what deserves to be called ART, you did a lot of things yourself and gave us this masterpiece. THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH FOR GIFTING US WITH YOUR UNDENIABLE TALENT.
Dude, so...i just keep going back and back and back again to 2:58 on...from "THERE, you, have you no pride" to "mothers will kill their own daughters" to "its not cruel or loveless .." to "the good of the many of those who most remain "...."it is my duty"..."with tear in eye and iron stomach(the wordplay in this alone is uuuyggghhnshfhdbb🤤)"... From Romulus and Remus to when the German chieftain Odoacer deposed the last Roman emperor of the West. Again great stuff! Time to go down the Buttress rabbit hole!

3:09 is my favorite part of this entire production. The way you command and shame. I wish some day I can have that power. Until then I'll just digest and manifest it.
I was 13 years old when I discovered your music, I remember listening to Inferno for the first time and the lyrics really caught my attention, your songs made me start to be interested in the events of the past and to analyze the lyrics, especially Brutus, the message that Rex leaves just blew me away, before I didn't really understand the lyrics of your songs, but the interest and goals of understanding just changed my mind. Your song The Attic touched my soul, since I also have the dream of making my art one day known and loved, keep it up Buttress, you are one of my main references in this life. Thank you! Lots of love from Colombia!
I was overjoyed to see this come out! What a brilliant follow-up; I enjoyed every single second, both the music and the video. Absolutely iconic, and wow, I love that you used my all-time favourite Dworkin quote as well! Raw and real. Keep creating incredible art. 💜
i must say, i wasn't expecting this when i heard there was going to be a sequel, but i am very on board with this change of pace. modern, but classic at the same time.
I kept watching this all weekend and ended up researching Brutus the figure and the character. I still have so many questions but mainly I’m just always happy when art makes me learn something - either about myself or whatever else. The range of emotion still really gets me here. Reminds me of Kate Bush’s wuthering heights, I love when ppl feel inspired by other works but then make something their own and add another layer. Buttress, I love that you bring hard and soft out here together, yin and Yang in balance. Art ain’t dead yet baby. But I’ll still buy your shit
yk the buttress is starting to become my favorite artist. the talent, emotion, lyrics, and music videos are all spectacular! i fell in love with Brutus after the first listen but i love all of their songs.

I love everything about you guys, I never thought I'll get a second part to Brutus, yet here we are. Absolutely in love, already listening on Spotify and watching the video multiple times! (I am also super thankful for the lyrics on the description, you are god sent!)
The end lines, so clear and hitting. Adding the clips of audio in the background of the credits that follow, covered by a louder beat, masked near-perfectly by the new tune. It's so good. It's been 7 months and *somehow* I never knew about this song, but I love it so much. It's so yummy for my ears !! I love Rex and have enjoyed listening to your music so much, it oddly helps me cope- BUT I LOVE IT SO THANK YOU BUTTRESS I HOPE YOU HAVE A LOVELY DAY WITH MUCH POSITIVITY !!! I skipped doing english classwork to listen to this /srs I have no regrets.
Buttress, I discovered you this weekend and haven't been able to stop listening. So much raw emotion in your work, I've never heard anything quite like this. Looking forward to hearing more!
I cant explain how happy i am that you have made a new song, you are one of my favorite artists and your ability to capture emotions in all your songs is most high
i don’t know if it’s the voice growth between the first version or if it’s on purpose, but brutus’ voice sounds way deeper, more mature. like the king she strives to be. either way, it adds more detail to the piece!
made me gasp twice, during when the scenes of brutality were being shown, and when caesar's ghost pointed at brutus, i think i might base my animation project off of this

thank you for making this song, I genuinely loved the first brutus and now I can listen to this along with it every day
I love everything about you guys, I never thought I'll get a second part to Brutus, yet here we are. Absolutely in love, already listening on Spotify and watching the video multiple times!
(I am also super thankful for the lyrics on the description, you are god sent!)
Buttress is fucking beyond great! She has the most complex delivery that most people wouldn't understand.
Remarkable. Fantastic visual storytelling! Great work by everyone ❤️
Whoa, just discovered Brutus I and II, and just awesome. Am not even into rap much, but this is art!
I skipped doing english classwork to listen to this /srs
I have no regrets.
Gonna tell my kids this was Epic Rap Battles of History
Goddamnit buttress this is fuckiNG GOLD. seriously. You’re straight god tier babes
grabbing youtube by the throat I HAVE THE BELL ON WHY DID I ONLY FIND THIS MASTERPIECE NOW AUGHHH
I am.
Brutus, thank you for recognizing me for I recognize you.
made me gasp twice, during when the scenes of brutality were being shown, and when caesar's ghost pointed at brutus, i think i might base my animation project off of this
Oh I love this so much. It goes so well with the original song, and yet still contrasts it perfectly. Your lyrics never fail to impress us
LET'S FREAKING GOOOOOO🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥BRO. THE SOUNDS THAT LEFT MY THROAT WHEN I SAW THIS ON MY TIMELINE😭😭😭 Love from South Africa🇿🇦
Ok, I was a fan of Brutus before it blew up but didn't know we got a sequel till now
