    Good objective observations - I bought a C100 M2 in March 2019 after using one at work for 4 years. I just liked the reliability of the camera, never overheats, Built-in NDs (HUGE), great form factor, insane battery life and yes, small file size. I agree - I can't believe a HD, 420 8 bit camera is still going for $2700 in 2020 (or even that it's still made). Kind of a testimony to this workhorse camera that Canon is still selling it. Even though it's showing it's age, it still makes great footage for web (where most content ends up!), the controls are well laid out, and the files are easy to edit without investing in new computers. I want to rent the Canon C70 when it comes out to consider a upgrade, but I still don't regret buying this old faithful camera for the kind of content I shoot.

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  4 года назад +1

      I completely and 100% agree with you! Even to this day it’s still a workhorse of a camera. I’d say if built in ND’s and full size XLR’s are important to you then for sure the c100mkii is what I’d recommend. Now the C70...that’s something that’s interesting.

    • @Sutterjack

      @@alexshotthese I didn't mention that I also love that the C100 M2 files grade remarkably well for being so small - pretty painless. I had such high hopes for the C200 but COME ON CANON - 4.2.0. 8 bit again- seriously??

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  4 года назад

      I know! I felt like they should have AT LEAST made it 8bit 4:2:2.

      @@alexshotthese Yes Canon has dropped the ball considerably in the last couple of years, but they seem to be waking up to their competition slowly but surely. So many choices in imaging these days - technology is advancing so rapidly. Overwhelming - but the most important thing is to SHOOT. Content is everything -doesn't matter what camera you're shooting with.

    This cam is awesome since purchased a short time ago. I am shooting interviews with it mostly. Mind sharing how you keep your subject in focus during interviews when not centered?

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  3 года назад +3

      Thanks for watching and commenting Jeremiah. When I had this camera I would manual focus most of the time. Other times I’d do a trick where I’d center focus them and then in post I’d scale to about 130% and reframe it up that way. Scaling that much in seemed to be the vest without loosing too much detail since it’s a 4K sensor downsampled to 1080p. You can also throw a touch of sharpening on it too if it’s not sharp enough for your liking.

    Great video man! A lot of these older cinema cameras are still great if you can get them at the right price. But the quality of the smaller cameras that are coming out now is insane. I had a heavy Sony F3 paired with an external recorder and loved it. But ended up selling it to get a BMPCC 4k and I regret nothing... Not having internal ND and good battery life almost prevented me from selling the F3. But I'm still glad that I sold it. My back will be happier too :)

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  4 года назад

      Totally agree. The C100mkii wasn’t that bad on weight so no complaints there. The smaller cameras are coming out with ridiculous specs though and it comes down to preference. Now that I have the pocket 4K, it does everything I want it to do in a cinema camera.

    Alex Schneider, thanks for the video. I am faced with a choice: - what to buy? 1. Canon 90D (canon 17-55 /2.8) 2. Canon C100 mark2? Now I'm shooting with Panasonic HC-X1

      Yeah, I actually picked one up through work at the start of this year. I posted a video about that recently. It definitely is still relevant today. Also, a nice little hack, just export in 4K and then you have a 4K image with it. I also always throw a touch of sharpening on the footage. Keep it around like 15-20 percent of sharpening.

    I own a BMpcc 4K and a Fuji X-T4. Happy with both of them. A few Weeks ago I bought a used C100 Mark II with a Sigma 18 - 35 mm. I really tried to convince myself that the Fuji and the Black magic have a better image quality BECAUSE they shoot in 4k and have a deeper bit rates. After hours of comparing these three Cameras I still could'nt believe HOW and WHY canon looked so much better(smoother, more realistic and cinematic) than others. Is that maybe the magic of Sigma? On BMPCC I use a cheap Lumix 25mm and on the Fuji the XF 18 55.

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  3 года назад +2

      The C100mkii is still a superb camera and the image quality is still stunning in 2021. What I do with my pocket and sigma combo is throw some black pro mist on it. Either 1/8 or 1/4 strength to take the digits edge off the image. I’ve been really impressed with the results.

    This is great. There is a used C100 mkII for sale in our area (asking $1800). Did you upsample the 1080p footage to 4k? We are currently using the EOS R6 and R. They are great and have some nice features. But the actual shooting experience with it, isn't fun. What do you think of the C100 mkII as a run and gun camera set up versus a modern hybrid mirrorless camera?

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  4 года назад +2

      Yes, I upscaled the 1080p to 4K all the time and looked great. It’s a great run and gun camera. Has everything you’d need too. Also, really has a lovely filmic look too. Personally, I still think it holds a relevant spot in today’s world.

      @@alexshotthese I think my only negative to a cinema cam is worry about stabilization. Right now I mount to Ronin S if I need something super stable, and then the R6's IBIS paired with and RF lenses is pretty damn good. Appreciate your video and reply. Thank you.

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  4 года назад +1

      Yeah no stabilization, but the weight of the camera, lens, and battery does help with shakiness and still helps with producing a more natural handheld look. The c100mkii should be able to be mounted on the Ronin S, but the only bummer is the AF is limited to the center. There is no face tracking or such.

Did you record using the Clog pircutre profile? And did you export the video as 4K or kept it as 1080p? Amazing work. I just bought a C70 but I might keep my C100mii just because it is so damn good with tiny file sizes!

    • @alexshotthese

      I did shoot with both those lenses! I also filmed in C-log and then export the final video out in 4K. Just edit on a 1080p timeline and then on the export change it to 4K. Works really well in my opinion. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      It really depends on what you’re shooting and doing. I love my pocket, but there are times where the file sizes get annoying. Buying more hard drives than I’d like, but then I shoot stuff with the pocket and play around with color grading and it’s a joy.
      Then when I had the C100mkii I loved the image, ergonomics, full size xlr’s, and built in NDs. You just don’t get actual 4K. It’s a 4K sensor down sampling in camera to 1080p so it’s pretty sharp 1080p. I’m tempted to rent the C100 again and do some tests
