This is the second time I'm replacing my alternator on my 2014 Jeep Compass and I've used this vid both times to do it. Thank you very much for this video. My alternator went out on me on the way to work. I spent 3 hours in one of our receiving bays pulling the alternator using your video on replay. It was my first time actually doing anything like this, and it went very well. I now have a beautiful sounding compass that's quieter then when i bought it.

I got it out the way you said. I could not get it back in. After about 5 hours of tilting and turning, i pulled the ac compressor towards me so the back rested on the bracket. That made enough room to slide it in a gap by the oil filter. The way they designed the engine bay of this car is ridiculous. From here on out i will look up repair videos before buying any car.
You described our exact situation. I have a Jeep Compass my wife had from before we were married. This reminds me of the boss level of replacing the corner light. At least they gave original owner lifetime power train. You da man for this video
Easier removal solution: Same steps but swing compressor outward and hold it there and then remove from directly underneath. You can also insert new alternator the same way (Jeep Compass 2011)

I saw your video in September 2021 and replaced the alternator on a 2014 2.0, I removed all the plastic fenders, the radiator reservoir to the side to make space for the breaker bar, took the belt off(make sure to take pictures or draw on paper a diagram of how the belt is set up. Not much on the internet on how to put it back on a compass2.0 belt if you forget🙄🤦),and moved the compressor out of the way. Putting the alternator and compressor back was a royal pain in the behind.. A few weeks ago my mechanic says, hey your alternator doesn't sound right. Sounds like when they go bad." Sure enough noise got louder. And here I am again. Never had a Problem with remanufactured parts till today. Oh well. Thanks again.
Thats the worst! I've had that happen too. Luckily my reman alternator lasted until the compass wouldn't drive anymore....which was even longer than the factory original. so glad I don't own this car anymore lol
Normally I evacuate the ac system drop the compressor all the way out.and no issues with extracting the alternator.but of course you need certain tools to evacuate and recharge the ac system.so your method is under stood good job man!!!!!!!
Thanks for the video. BTW the pulley on this ALT is called a Decoupler Pulley. Here's what it does: A Decoupler Pulley helps "synchronize" the belt drive system for improved engine efficiency, reduced Noise/Vibration/Harshness and increased component life. It features a sophisticated internal spring and clutch system that absorbs the force associated with belt accelerations and tension reversals and permits the alternator to "free-wheel" or "overrun" when the belt suddenly decelerates.
This was very helpful. Thank you sir! Took me about 15 mins to get all the bolts and electrical connectors loose from both the a/c and the alternator. Then it took about an hour and a half to finagle the alternator around to find the "sweet spot" for it to come out.

Took me 3 hours from start to finish. Need 16mm 13mm shallow. 13mm deep sockets. 16mm wrench for belt tensioner. Do not have to take of accumulated. Just idler pulley a/compressor.

I know this is an old video but in actuality, the decoupler pulley is replaceable. Gates makes a tool to help remove it. You pull the end cover of the pulley by poking a pick through the end and hook it. Then insert the Gates tools to loosen it. Amazon sells tool kits also that cost way less than the Gates tool. The decoupler pulley runs anywhere from $105 to as little as $55 for an original Gates Pulley depending on where you purchase it. The unfortunate thing is on our 2012 Jeep Compass, that pulley lands directly in line with the frame of the car! So I either have to drop the alternator or disconnect 3 motor mounts and attempt to lift one end of the engine enough to clear the frame, which at this point honestly sounds easier!
I did this on my friends car and I'm glad to see this was the only way it could come out, I sat there thinking there's probably an easier way it could of came out...lol. cool video
It took me the better part of at least two hours. not knowing what i was looking for didnt help but although its tight it wasnt that bad of a job for someone who has some knowledge of working on cars. id say 45 min straight was trying to figure out how to actually get the thing out after it was loose. 2nd person cant help too much bc its such a tight space...GOOD LUCK!!!
Awesome video, my 2007 Jeep compass is making an odd noise up front. I also see red dust on the pulley side of my alternator. I'm guessing this is the cause. Should be a fun weekend after Christmas...
Good job guinness! I had the same problem with my wife's patriot. Let me tell you, these things are just a big of junk as the compass. I HATE the patriot and all other models that share the same engine/frame. Wish I saw this vid when I did my alternator. Now I am having problems with the AC going out and my main problem is the intake manifold runner control stuck open. Just gonna change out the whole intake manifold and trying to find some tips. Also had lower control arm bushings done. JUNK car
zx10rpower yeah I know, but it could be worse. have you had any trouble with your transmission? mine stop making noise after a fluid change with valvoline cvt fluid. but my valve thing is stuck open too. did you fix that?
You did this job the hard and long way lol. I just did one of these today took both the washer and coolant reservoir out, took the passenger motor mount, unbolted the power steering pump and moved it to the side left the line attached, jack and block of wood on a jack under the oil pan lifted the engine up to gain access, removed both idler pulleys then the tensioner pulley then remove the tensioner itself, unbolted the alternator and the connections i also took the ground wire off on the frame by the alternator and slid it around and removed the alternator from the top took me about 30 mins and this was the first time i did the job lol. Only to find out the problem is in the pcm not allowing the alternator to charge the battery so now waiting on the pcm to get here. Again the way i did it was about 30 mins to remove it so about an hour overall.
Ok so update to this video.. if you look at where the compressor is dropped, that aluminum L bracket on the left can be dropped with 3 screws freeing that whole bottom up. It’s connected to the oil pan but doesn’t do anything in regards. Drop that and you’re home free. 👍
The caliber and compass share a lot of the same parts, Im pretty sure the frames are actually identical. So i guess you will also be sharing my headaches dealing with the front end of this car...good luck with the alternator!
lol did the same thing recently where it was shooting sparks when replacing the intake manifold gasket to fix a large air leak. car would not start after that but just replaced the battery terminals and was fine
Nah I wouldnt bother removing the bumper, im sure it would help a little but thers enough room to manage with leaving it there. If you do remove please let us know if it helps or not!
its more of a whining / humming noise mostly occurs on deceleration. eventually it did start to rattle a little bit and gradually got worse which is when i finally dealt with it.
Explaining that it would not look like it can be removed because the access was too small was perfect. I knew it would barely squeak by from your comments. Also, my manual did not mention removing the evaporator which was very helpful. I also had to remove the A/C bracket.
my belt looked fine so I didnt replace it. If ther is any doubt about the belt its def better to replace it during this repair since the belt has to come off/mostly off anyway. Also did not replace idler pulley since it did not have any obvious signs of being bad. got my alternator from a local shop that deals strictly with refurbishing generators. most other parts i get from various online sites. carpartswholesale (now called "parts train") has been pretty good
my mother has a patriot with 80k and the same problem. im not sure if it has that type of alternator but the car sounded like a tank rolling down the street and it took the shop two visits to figure out it was the alt! the belt was also frayed and needed to be replaced
I replacement the alternator pulley yesterday...I'm so happy when I start the engine. Not for long. My steering wheel stop working :( I add the fluid...I also try remove the air but something it's wrong:(

Could be the alternator or the pcm. These post fiat buyout Chrysler pcms are trash. If the battery light is still on after you replace the alternator start checking pin 51 on the 96 pin pcm connection the large connection.
Having difficulty getting the splash guards off. Too bad your video started with them already off. Not sure which bolts/tabs are necessary to remove the guards. Nice video though!

I forget exactly how long now, someone else posted it took them 3 hours total. Id say if I had to do it a second time it would be a 2 hour job. I spent a lot of time fighting with the alternator to get it out the first time. Good luck! we're at 160K now so might be getting ready to do this again...hopefully not
ughhh yes it was terrible and I spent many hours under that car fixing it for many things! When I first checked on this Jeep recommended the whole engine moved for this job and I was hoping there was another way. I hope this video helped a bit although I know its not the best, never realized how many people this would reach

I hate thing made by this company because they build the motor then married the body to it.. pain in the ass why books calls for 3 hrs but also letting lose the thing you said why shop charge a arm and a leg just gor this.. told her wait to I get home and I swap the alt out.. and I had to fight.. so if you think is a east job skill needed for this at 5 or higher because all the things you have to listen up or remove.. many think it going to be the 2 bolts and the lock nuts but this made her see why the ship make a killing when these thing gose.. I told her I hate American cars todat.. made by crack heads when they design this car..
Moms alternator is dieing as we speak at less than 5 years and little under 35000 miles. I've HATED CHRYSLER for most of my life but now... I don't even know the word I can use here... I'm just pissed off. Thanks Chrysler for being douche-bags and deliberately including design flaws in your so called Jeeps.

The silver part you identified as the condenser is called an accumulator. The condenser is mounted in front of the radiator.

I removed the bracket from the oil pan that holds the compressor too and it came out pretty easily.

Hi I have a 2007 jeep compass battery light stay on I just bought a new battery... Could it be the alternater
NISA yes. If you replaced the battery and it’s still on it’s definitely the alternator

Found a earlier way to get the alternator out you can come between the oil filter and the alternator bracket with no problems
sorry its been way to long and I have no Idea. A/c compressor bolts were pretty small. alt bolts were bigger but not sure what size

my Ac doesn't work,Might do a deleted and put a short belt on it.

I hate thing made by this company because they build the motor then married the body to it.. pain in the ass why books calls for 3 hrs but also letting lose the thing you said why shop charge a arm and a leg just gor this.. told her wait to I get home and I swap the alt out.. and I had to fight.. so if you think is a east job skill needed for this at 5 or higher because all the things you have to listen up or remove.. many think it going to be the 2 bolts and the lock nuts but this made her see why the ship make a killing when these thing gose.. I told her I hate American cars todat.. made by crack heads when they design this car..

Moms alternator is dieing as we speak at less than 5 years and little under 35000 miles. I've HATED CHRYSLER for most of my life but now... I don't even know the word I can use here... I'm just pissed off. Thanks Chrysler for being douche-bags and deliberately including design flaws in your so called Jeeps.
