  • We hear about "belly breathing" all the time. Think less sticking out your gut and more like filling up a balloon.
All right. In this video, we're going to be talking about breathing, breathing super important for movement in your entire body. If you're not breathing right, it's really difficult to retrain other things. And if other things aren't moving well, it's very easy for your breathing to be thrown off. So this is a pretty essential exercise. All right. So when we're looking at breathing, you're going to look at your belly button.
That belly button should rise towards the ceiling and then head down towards the feet and then on exhale. The belly button should go down towards the ground and then move up towards the head. Right. So it's going up and down towards the ceiling and floor as well as up and down towards feet and head. Okay. So to review as you're looking what you're looking for, that belly button to do is rise up towards the ceiling and move down towards your feet and then move down towards the floor and up towards your head on the exhale.
And out. Because so is doing an okay job of going floor to ceiling. But I'm not seeing a whole lot of foot to head. So though this is lovely and she's doing a great job stimulating that pelvic floor, it's not doing what we needed to do. So we're going move on. Next place we're going to check is diaphragm.
So to stimulate diaphragm, you're going to go up underneath your ribs like so. So to do that on yourself, you will take your fingers and wrap them around. Good. So let's move that shirt a little bit so we can see that belly button. Good, good. So take a nice, deep breath, and on your inhale, you're going to try to push your fingers again down towards your feet and then blow it all out.
I mean, that's a little bit better going again. And so pay attention when you're looking at the movement of your belly button to deep down in your belly button, because what you'll end up seeing when it goes the right direction is that there's almost like this little hooking that happens on the inside of the belly button. It's like someone just takes it and lifts up the inside.
All right. So that's okay. But maybe not quite as good as we would like it to be. All right. So last fight, we're going to go into that posterior aspect of the diaphragm. So simulate that on yourself. You can take this and just stick them. Right, right in there. Okay. Take a breath in. And on this breath in, you're going to push your ribs down towards the ground and then blow it all out.
You can vibrate a little bit or create more intense pressure. Take a breath in again and blow it all out of that. That's the one. If you've tried each of those three places, if you tried stimulating them and breathing into them, then you can't get your belly button to move the correct way. There's probably more going on that needs to be addressed, right?
Bring it up next time again. Okay. So we are very commonly taught to belly breathe and that is not necessarily wrong, but it is very misinterpreted. Belly breathing should be the idea of blowing up a balloon. And when you blow up a balloon, the balloon blows up in all directions and at the end fills up sort of before the tap does right.
The end being down into your pelvis and the top big lungs neck. Right. Obviously, your air doesn't actually come down into your pelvis, but the lowering of the diaphragm and the feeling of the lungs makes your organs come down. Right. They should come down, but they should also come out in all directions. So very commonly we see belly breathing looking like this.
Oh, man, I just blew out my balloon. All sorts of goofy, right? Your balloon blew out in one direction, but it did not blow out in all directions, which means you lost your core function and capability and you started working other places. You didn't allow your diaphragm or your pelvic floor to move and do any help. So a breath really should feel more like blowing up a balloon or trying to like if you're wearing a corset, almost like you were trying to pop the corset by creating pressure out in all directions.
