    Also when a person's fandom involves real people, like youtubers, the fandom needs to respect that person and remember that it is a real individual with their own emotions and not just a fictional character.

    I think the 'phandom' is a big example of a poorly represented fanbase. A massive group of people see them as the 'OMFG PHANDOM IS MY LIFE!!1! DONT CRY CRAFT XDXDXD' fandom and subsequently find them very annoying on twitter and tumblr. I remember when I used to be a dan and Phil viewer, phandom members on twitter were super mean. Literally if ANYONE said a bad word about dan and phil they would be attacked by the phandom. This included random people, other content creators, and other phandom members. For example; Catrific would be bullied online for simply being friends with them. I think this is so sad and unfortunately shines dan and Phil in a bad light. It really makes their fandom seem unapproachable due to a loud minority of people which is really sad and untrue.
    Disclaimer
    I don't watch dan and Phil anymore because my entertainment values have changed. This has nothing to do with dan and Phil I still appreciate them as people and creators. I also admire how far they have come since a began watching them 7 years ago.

I still remember a few years ago I made a comment saying that they remind me of myself and my best friend, some random fan for whatever reason got so offended by my comment. It's not like I was comparing myself to a god or anything, I just thought their banter was so much like the banter my friend and I do.

    • @artsysundae
      @artsysundae 6 лет назад +9

    A fandom is made up of 90% normal individuals and 10% that we don't talk about.
    The 90% is quiet and keeps their opinions to themselves unless they have a really good contribution and generally just enjoy the content of the thing that the fandom is based on, while the 10% are really vocal and really stupid. Who's comments will you most likely see? I know, it's sad.

    One of your points has been passed around Tumblr for a while - there's always going to be that 10% that behaves badly, doesn't mean it's representative of the whole fandom, unfortunately the larger a fandom the larger the actual size of that 10% as well, meaning even louder noises from them, resulting in things like desth threats to the original creators for deviating from fanon expectations (/cough/ Voltron) or death threats within the fandom (/cough/ Undertale needle cookie incident /cough/) and people perceiving this as reasons to avoid the fandom and the IP. It's basically bad publicity because all actions are visible and can go viral with the advent of the internet.

      i agree, i also thought about voltron throughout this video. i am a pretty huge fan of the show and i am beyond excited for the next season, but the fandom is so toxic with their ships and their characters that it's ridiculous. at the voltron panel in SDCC, a fan basically harassed the crew about lance, and i cringed SO damn hard. sigh, its such a good show and doesn't deserve this.

    I agree 100% with this entire video. Just a quick story, I'm a fan of Marvel (movies not the comics) and there is this group of kids who I was having a conversation with about Infinity War. One of them said "The comic played out so differently" and I just innocently asked "What happened in the comic" ? And they started calling me out cause I didn't read the comics. I just wanted to have a chat about some superheroes and they were basically calling me out cause I don't know every little detail. But does that stop me from liking Marvel? No. Evem if you took the fandom away from it, Marvel movies are still pretty damn good.

    • @marypalmer00

      Nina C. I mean MCU and comics are two different universes, you don't *have* to know what's going on in the comics to enjoy the movies... there's too damn many of them anyway, it would take a lifetime to read them all + additional media (TV shows, cartoon series, etc)

    I can't stand being in a fandom, especially if I'm really invested in something. Which is a shame, because I'd love to talk about things, create fan art or even just look at pretty gifs... But it's never just that. There's always drama, there's always hate, there's always negativity and it just drags me down. Maybe I just need thicker skin, but every bad experience, every stupid thing I read, leaves a bad aftertaste in my mouth and I'd rather not engage with a fanbase at all than let it taint my perception of the original thing.
    I'm also deeply uncomfortable with real people fandoms and treating creators like fictional characters. I won't police anyone, but it always feels rude and way to personal to me, especially everything in the shipping area.
    I don't think I'll ever stop creating art for the things I love or even people that inspire me, but unless a magic negativity+shipping+canonaltering filter is invented I think I need to stay in my bubble for my own sanity.

    Thank you for this PJ I am part of the Dan and Phil fandom I don't ship them but I am always looked down upon because I don't ship them and that I don't read fanfics as I've had a few members say that I'm not a true fan and your point is right whenever I mention down and feel people have a Outlook of that they are cringey but they really not there two human beings making content what the fandom does is not in Dan and Phil's control and people just assume the sexualities because some people in the fandom are writing fanfiction and that's the only thing that people are looking at and content and fans aren't the same thing I don't know if this makes sense but I know I'm going to be slated in the comments I hope I'm not I'm just expressing an opinion I'm not saying it's right or wrong but that's just what I believe thank you for Reading

      but what annoys me most is that every time i look at the comments of their videos 95% of them are either 'omg they looked at each other for 5 milliseconds! they are so in love!!' or something like 'dan looks so hot with his new earring' instead of commenting something about the content of the video..
      or even worse like this one time where dan said he'll 'put chocolate and something else in his mouth' which was clearly a joke and literally no one actually commented about the actual video which was really good and also pretty deep and personal..

      I always did feel a bit uncomfortable with the shipping between dan and phil as well as pj and chris (tbh this goes for all real people). 1. They're real people not characters. 2. Some of the ones doing the shipping make me feel like they're at the very least on the border of fetishising lgbtq+ people. And 3. As a queer person myself it sets off uncomfortable feelings of alarm when fans insist they're of a sexuality when the person's not come out with that info or specifically clearly avoided it. Especially when the suspicions for dan being at least bi or pan are actually quite reasonable. Ofc they're not gonna feel safe coming out if they're undeed not straight when people act the way they do by them just making a joking inuendo etc.
      That this issue in the dan and phil fandom is so front and center is exactly the reason as to why my interractions with the fandom is pretty much limited to "innocent" fanart. Ofc not everyone act this way. Even some "phans" dont. But an overwhelming amount actually do.

    There’s been this movement on Tumblr (I know, but hear me out) to end cringe culture. Stating that “simply being a fan of content doesn’t make you ‘cringey’, but doing things that are considered morally wrong by most people (ex. making pedophilic fanart, making sexual fanfic of a person who explicitly said not to, bullying people in/outside the fandom, harassing creators, etc) makes you cringey”.

    I really enjoyed this video PJ. I am coming at this from an 'anti-fandom' side, not because I think people shouldn't like what they like, but because I feel like the connotation of the word 'fandom' has changed. I think it has moved away from being a synonym for 'community' where now, just liking the thing isn't enough. It's like in fandom everyone has to have the same opinion about everything or there's gonna be 'fanwars', like if you're in the fandom you have /this/ and /that/ responsibility and you have to have /this/ opinion otherwise you're not a good fan of the show. 'Fandom' is connotating more and more homogeneity IMO, but its unrealistic that all these strangers that only have 1 favorite show in common could ever agree on certain things, and that's what creates a toxic enviornment and why it can get so ... cult-y. Like, why can't we just go back to liking it and that's it? I just avoid using the word now in general. I'd rather just say 'community'.

    • @dallleekah4035
      @dallleekah4035 6 лет назад +5

      Hi! I just wanted to say that I wholeheartedly agree with you on the fact that the definition of "fandom" has evolved over the years. I have seen some people getting bullied because they did not reach the "standards" of a certain fandom. (By the way, to me this is complete gibberish. You belong to the community as long as you like it and respect others, right? Even though respecting others should be universal.) But anyways, I know this whole comment section is talking about the Phandom but to my mind, it definitely shows the whole spectrum of people that consider themselves a fan of something. One day, in the comments of a video in which Dan and Phil spoke about the release of their first book, someone said something along the lines of: "I wish I could buy it to support you but I can't, I am still going to watch your videos, though." Which is pretty wholesome when you think about it. The person who commented meant no harm and actually considers the creators as human beings who need a community behind their backs; although, the response they got was disgusting. And again, I am writing this from memory, but it was something similar to: "Oh yeah you can't buy their book? Then how dare you call yourself a fan then?". When sometimes you just feel like you want to share informations about your passion on the internet, there will always be people who attack you for it. It's just a shame that even when your intentions are at best, you are never far from close-minded people. I generally stay away from comment sections but I could not help but find the subject way too interesting to not leave my mark. Plus, it's usually unspoken of by content creators, which is fine, they have other things to do, we've all got a life, I get it. But it feels nice to address the issue, still.

      Reminds me of the bts fandom where if you don't spend time streaming their music videos (playing them over and over to give them more views), you're called lazy and ungrateful ("it's the least we can do for them." "just pure laziness." actual comments I've gotten). No, I don't owe artists anything besides basic respect, just like everyone else. I'm sorry some people would rather actually live their lives than spend their time on people they idolize. I have school, hobbies, family, chores; I am not going to erode the little time i have on this planet with pleasing the community. Do you think the idols you follow stream videos of *their* favourite artists? No, they don't, because they know how to allot their time and spend it productively on themselves and people actually in their life, which is why they made it further than you ever have or likely will.
      Sorry for that haha but this whole topic make me, uh... very passionate, let's say hehe.

      I agree, that's why I just watch shows and listen to music that I love, but not join the fandoms. Im ok if I met someone who happens to like the same things as me, but only if we can have nice conversations and share different opinions. For me that's good enough, because fandoms/communities can be way too much.

    First of all I really liked how you approached this topic. You did a good job of showing both sides and managed to talk about this very controversial topic without offending anyone which is quite impressive.
    I personally think it’s sad that it’s usually the “bad” part of the fandom that is the most vocal, which tends to give certain fandoms a bad reputation. An example of this is the Dan and Phil fandom or the “Phandom”. The fandom is or at least used to be known as an annoying or “intense” fandom, taking over random comment sections or spamming every single video in which Dan or Phil appear in. And even worse is the fact that it affects Dan and Phil themselves, where some youtubers choose to avoid featuring Dan and Phil because they don’t want the fandom that comes with. Even though this part of the fandom might actually be the minority, they create a bad reputation for everyone else, because they are the most vocal.
    Therefore I think fandoms are both good and bad, but from the outside you might only see the bad part.
    (Sorry for the possible mistakes, English isn’t my first language)

    This was very well stated and crafted PJ. I've definitely been turned off of things because of their fans. I find that when people enjoy things together it can be great but also opens the door to lots of toxicity. That's why with most things I try to be in that middle ground. I was deep into a particular band fandom for years to the point it was mostly what I spent my time on. It was so toxic and stressful that I vowed I'd like things without being an active fandom member from then on. I do dip a bit into the wider fandom sometimes but for the most part I've managed to stay away from the drama created by fans of certain things and keep my enjoyment. Then you get into things like people who say to be a "real" fan you must watch every episode or read a creators every tweet. Why cant people just like things at levels that they are comfortable with? In any case this video has made me more interested in checking out certain things that I've been turned off of because of my outsider perception of the fans.

    Honestly there are certain fandoms that get so much hate, the Undertale fandom, and the Phandom being two of many. To be honest, if everyone respected how much work is put into something rather than just judge it from a very small portion of the fandom, we’d all be happy. Each of us have our own opinions, and I’m all for expressing them, as long as they aren’t negative. If you don’t like it, just step away.

    k so i've been fangirling over people probably ever since i was born. i've been a part of all of the fandoms that are called 'toxic' ... the undertale fandom, the dan and phil fandom, the kpop fandom... and i get what people mean. i thought about the same things too. ''i love undertale, but why.. are people doing this.. i don't want to be a part of it because of this..'' but then i realized that i genuinely like and enjoy some things. doesn't matter how the fandom is, or how mainstream it is. its something that i enjoy, and i just don't care about what people think about me being in one certain fandom. i never did the kinds of things people like to point out, so there's nothing for me to feel bad about. that's how i think. i hope some people can also understand that not all the fans are the same. its like judging all 7 billion people because of one disrespectful person. that's not how it works.

      This video especially should be sent to people who stop liking a group like BTS just because of the vocal toxic minority of fans. The craziest thing I've realised since I became a kpop fan, is that some sports fans on Twitter are just as, or even MORE, inhumane in the things they say and do than kpop fans. That doesn't make me hate the sport. This is such a basic thing to understand about the divide between fandoms and the art being fawned over, but it's not clicking for most people.

    • @alexoneil594
      @alexoneil594 6 лет назад +1

      KittyCatThang the twenty one pilots fandom was a supportive, tight-knit family when it was all people who related to the music because they struggled with anxiety and/or depression and the band really helped them...then they made it big and turned it into the massively toxic fandom that makes people hate the band.
      It sucks that these days when something gets popular because it deserves to, it always feels like it's ruined for the original and casual fans because of the hard-core, toxic fans that come out of nowhere. It's hard to be completely happy for the artist/person/creator/etc. even though it's selfish to not be.

    • @KittyCatThang
      @KittyCatThang 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, I feel that. It's a problem when something you love becomes massively popular, and either really young people who are brand new to fandoms go overboard or people who don't have limits join in and then start gatekeeping. Like, isn't the point of being a fan to just celebrate the things you love? Why are you trying to force that thing to conform to your standards, or prventing people from loving that thing with you? That's not love, that's being possessive, and that's not okay.

  • @abbyfossati2519

    I think another time when fandoms become truly negative is when members of the community begin to harm each other, not only the original artist. there is a fine line between disagreeing over whether, for example, a ship is valid, and taking that one step too far and actively attacking people. Once, a fan gave another fan who made lots of art shipping too characters cookies with needles in them, simply because they did not agree with the artists ship. Actions like these also definitely put fandoms in bad light.

    I have this problem with my parents thinking I'm a crazy fan. I am a K-Pop fan, and only know the ins and outs of my favourite group. But recently, I could be watching any individual who is Asian- RHPC, WongFu, even freaking Domics, and my parents will group them all into a non-existent category of "Nikki's Korean boys". At the start of my enjoyment, back when I only liked the one band, my sister said I was becoming a weeb, a friend laughed and mumbled "fetish" under her breath, heck, my dad was bored last night and looking up celebrities who share birthdays with us, saw a Korean rapper and asked me who he was because "he seems like someone I would know". Turns out the guy was from Seventeen, which is a group I definitely know of and enjoy, but the fact that my parents give me literal grief for enjoying foreign media, even after not caring when my sister got into anime, just annoys me, and I don't know how to make them stop.

    In my experience, the worst part about fandoms are the ships. I see people attacking other members of THE SAME FANDOM on a daily basis just because they ship two different characters together. At the end of the day, you both like the content as a whole, and the creators worked really hard on something that they wanted people to share and collectively enjoy. It's totally okay to ship things, or have different opinions in general about the art, as long as you're not putting other people down in the process and remember that what you do/say in a fandom affects the artist as well.
    In summary: Let people enjoy what they want, be kind to one another, support the artists who make good content, and don't be put off by negative fandoms. Thanks for the thoughtful and creative video as always pj, I really liked this one!

  • @emi-we1xs

    Fandoms involving real people are really different/strange... it’s hard to tell where to draw the line in creating stuff about them (because they’re real people with feelings and opinions? Which I think is different from creating fan content about a fictional character that an artist/writer creates) It definitely plays apart in making the fans really invested in the creator’s personal lives, which I know isn’t a new thing but can still become harmful for both parties if it gets out of hand

      I do think it's kinda weird to ship real people... but to a certain point I believe it can be fine as long as it doesn't do any harm and affect the real world in a negative way. Which almost always happens with those things unfortunately. But why take away the right to dream, imagine something that's not real, I mean, I found some stuff that I've read with a pairing consisting of real-life people actually pretty good. Although oftentimes, everything _except_ the character's appearance and name is changed completely anyway, the behavior, the background...

    For a while, I avoided listening to bts and then, to an extent, kpop in general because of a specific few, very toxic, bts fans that had, in my mind, become the example of how all bts fans (and eventually kpop fans) acted. I've only recently explored that genre of music and I found that I like it and I was genuinely missing out bc of this mind set that the way a few toxic people act is how the music is as a whole. Fandoms are a fun and creative place but I think its very important to not base your opinions on a fandoms actions and give every form of art an equal shot despite it. (This probably doesnt make sense rip)

There is such an art with Korean pop, but people often overlook it because of a small percentage of the fan base.

      i'm also a bts fan, and i agree with deciding who you surround yourself with, but it is very hard when a majority of fans behave a certain way online. no matter how much you block people, blacklist words and tags, there is still a common theme in the way kpop fans behave, and it is very exhausting when being a fan of a group consists of trying desperately to block and ignore other fans.

      lol another thing I personally don't like (and this is not exclusive to the Marvel fandom but quite prominent in it) is when on meetups and conventions and such w/ the actors the fans cross all boundaries when taking pictures with them and talk to them in a disrespectful manner... I just cringe every time I see it. why not take a photo like a normal person & not invade personal space, not shout something completely ridiculous... 🤦

      Jovis one girl was talking about tessa (toms dog) because her friend drew her and seb asked “who’s tessa” and the girl replied “His dog oh my gosh educate yourself!” in a super disrespectful way. then anthony stepped and asked how she knew about tessa and she explained how tom posts about her online. and anthony then continued to say that him and sebastian were adults who spend their time in other ways rather than stalking tom on the internet. after that the girls continued to talk about other things and had a cringe worthy conversation with anthony. they did not ask a question like they were meant to, and anthony eventually just cut them off and moved on to someone else.

    I have to point out though, PJ, drawing sexy drawings of your favorite characters actually could be harmful if the characters are from a kids show and it is likely a young kid on the internet looking up their kid show could find some disturbing images. I'm not saying this is point against fandoms, just saying that especially sexual or violent fanart of kids media does not exist in a bubble.

    One thing I think should be acknowledged is Septiplier art. And recently an artist has risen again, making sexual art of them. I think if you make that kind of art about two real life ppl or maybe some fictional ppl who are real, then you should just completely stop what you're doing. And especially when those ppl have said that sexual art of them makes them uncomfortable. You shouldn't have to do that just for your enjoyment when they really don't like you doing that thing. And not just with septiplier, with any other fandom. I didn't mean to offend anyone with this, if I did sorry.

Because Jack and Mark had both said at some point they didn’t like the way they were being sexualised etc and I knew to respect that and also the fact I didn’t particularly ship them anyway. And I didn’t want to see all that stuff but it kept popping up and it rlly annoyed me.

    I know everyone is saying this but the "phandom" is an example of people going over the top crazy. Yes I am a part of the dan and Phil fandom however by saying I am apart of the fandom I mean watching their videos and following them on instagram and Twitter, I don't write fan fiction or draw extreamly inappropriate fan art and I do not "ship" them . However when I say I'm in the phandom people assume I do all of the inappropriate fan and and fan fiction and harass them about personal things because that's what the majority of the phandom is like therefore representing their fan base as crazed shippers (eventhough there is a lot that arnt) .

    i agree completely. all throughout 2013-2016 i would sometimes watch dan and phil but i would avoid their fandom completely because so many people looked down upon the fans and so many of them were presumed as annoying and cringy. i completely forgot about dan and phil all throughout 2017 and most of 2018, but in around october of 2018 i re-discovered dans channel and fell into a loophole of watching all their different videos. i ended up realizing i really, really love their content and i think they’re great people; the phandom isn’t as bad as the maybe 10% of crazy fans make it out to be. although i’m sad i missed out on two tours, their books, a lot of their videos and inside jokes, i’m glad i’ve actually given them a chance.

      I personally loved voltron until the point in which shiro and Keith's brotherly relationship started to crumble. I thought the show had a lot of potential...so I was kind of disappointed with how it ended. However I agree that threatening produceders is wrong but I also believe that there is nothing wrong with showing LGBTQ representation in children's shows. The only representation they got was Shiro but SPOILER ALERT they killed Adam and they had Shiro marry some random guy. I agree with you completely that some fans are doing too much but I also think the writing of that show got extremely sloppy toward the end.

    i think im part of the worst fandom of them all - Star Wars. i align myself with a group who chased two of the actresses off of instagram, caused the jar jar actor to have su*cidal thoughts, bullied a literal child -and so much more. but i also have to constantly remind myself that the people who did that are maybe 2% of the fandom. i wish we could all maybe realize how unimportant arguing about the ethics of space fascists is, but i also love people ive grown to know from it. i love people’s passion for these movies. so overall, fandoms can be terrific when you’re able to step back from it, and don’t let blind passion go too far. people are here because said thing makes them happy, so why bring so much negativity into it?

  • @starself0

    obviously you shouldnt let a fandom affect the way you view or approach something but its really hard not to. like how am i ever going to watch rick and morty without thinking of my friend recommending it to me while literally saying that if i dont like it im just not smart enough to watch it or without thinking of people absolutely losing it about a sauce. its always going to be the thing i associate with the show the most. how are you supposed to just forget about all that?

  • @ahhguts
    @ahhguts 6 лет назад +2

    i agree with all of your points!
    i am in band fandoms, more specifically kpop fandoms, and they are very.. interesting. some fans take things _way_ too far, and often i am often ashamed to be associated with them. everyone is there to support their favorite artists, and everyone can support them in different ways, but there are small sections of every fandom that always take it a little too far. like i said, i am sometimes ashamed to be associated with my fandoms, but its because of that small part that takes it too far that every non-fan associates the whole fandom with. i dont want to be seen as "weird" for supporting my faves, but, like you said in the video, we should just support them how we like.
    really, the only fans that bother me are ones that bombard others with "i like this group/show/game so much!! you should like them too!!" but taking it as far as to spam it on every site they can. if someone wants to enjoy something, they should just give a simple recommendation. i guarantee if you tell someone "hey, i like this! you should check it out!" one time nicely you'll get your point across rather than being annoyingly overexcited.
    another point you made that i would like to touch on is the fanart(s). i believe that fanfictions, fanart, and cosplays are wonderful! some may be more.. erotic.. than others, but there's nothing wrong with creativity and self-expression. although some people take it WAY too far, ive only read a couple fics in my life and some of the things ive read are so incredibly well written. the fanarts are amazing, and its mesmerizing just to see the creativity that some people have.
    also, as seemingly innocent as quoting something you love is, it gets quite annoying after a while. really, lots and lots of fandoms i've seen have commented quotes from something they enjoy on other people's posts/videos that don't even pertain to them. its not funny nor cool, it just makes the person receiving it hate that thing/fandom more and more.
    i apologize for writing a novel, but the way you touched on how fandoms are perceived was so well thought out and relatable that i just had to comment on it, haha.

    I am an active member in a lot of fandoms. I feel like the biggest problem, like you discussed, is when the lines between fiction and reality become blurred for some people. If you read or observe a piece of fiction created by someone in a fandom, it is important to remember that its not real. And you cannot let fictional things ruin something you love for you. For example, I was talking to a friend the other day about Voltron. He said that he didn't really like the show anymore because he had read so much fanfiction that he could not accept the current cannon. This is such a big problem. For anyone out there that is joining a fandom for the first time, or is starting to grow tired if a fandom just remember that a) it is your choice whether to participate in a fandom or not, do not let someone pressure you into it and b) don't let fan creations ruin the show, movie, or book for you. Create your own opinions and enjoy the content as you choose. Also don't be an asshole.
