So much katana content on YT but it was seriously lacking on thrash/heavy metal until now!! I'm enjoying a lot this series, and I'm hoping to see a black album tone in the future. Thanks for the vídeo
Great tone! The Katana is really unbelievable. I've got one and also a 6505+ and I've managed to make the Katana sounds as good as the Peavey. The only difference for me is that the Katanas are a bit more gritty, but overall really amazing.
I've had the boss 50w and the head and for me the best thing about it is your not spending money on pedals. A few hours online downloading tones and that's it. Keeps everything simple
Thanks for the recent Katana videos, these got me to pull the trigger on a Katana Artist MKII Head last week and I love it. They definitely have a lot of bang for the buck. I've only been playing less than 2 years so I don't feel like I deserve to shell out a couple grand for a head but this will hold me over until I'm there. Thanks for the inspiration and awesome content too!
Tone wise I prefer the 5150, but the fact the katana sounds that close is insane. To me the 5150 sounds more like that classic guitar tone I know from growing up. The Katana has a weird lowend that isn't present on the 5150.
It wasn’t until I edited them later on and listened back that there’s a little more low end there. That’ll go taking out a little more on the input eq around the 125-250hz range. Only 1/2 a db or so
It's also lacking the dynamic response of the 5150 but you wouldn't notice in a mix considering there's usually compression happening and what not anyway. Still, I'll keep my tube amp but this will be a great backup and also just good for traveling as I'd prefer not to fuck up my Ferrari so to speak
Thanks LambChopper I have a Katana Mk II and it is always great to hear what people are doing with this equipment... your riff is super-tight and clean, I've been trying to learn it forever. Great to see you putting out videos again!
I was thinking about learning Bark at the Moon after watching a video of the isolated guitar track. Next thing I know, LambChopper pops up with this video. 🤣 Perfect timing.
Man, the A/B was so close, I closed my eyes and couldn't tell which was which. I've downloaded all your presets, I really appreciate you sharing them. I suck at using EQ so it's very eye-opening to see what settings you're using. Even though they look subtle, it does make a big different. Cheers!
Something to consider, just play a pedal tone, or some simple chords and close your eyes while adjusting each knob. Just listen carefully, until you get the bass where you like, then the mids, then the treble. Then go through them a couple more times. Just listen for what you like the best while you're going. It's a really great exercise for finding what you like best.
One of my favorite non Randy Rhoads tracks from Ozzy - Scratch that - one of my favorite guitar parts period. I love playing that song - Great job - I captured your settings gonna have do a little comparison here at home - I don't have a Captor X myself so I think Ill Just run them Both through EVH 2x12 . - I love my Katana unbelievably versatile - but I also love my EVH. SO funny when I did the screen grab I noticed the cassette- I thought it was a picot on the wall at first lol. Thanks for the vid man - very cool. Cheers!
Cool story regarding the local record shop...back in 1995-96 the local bloke at my music shop gave me a listen to all his collection of tapes from the "fan-cans"...they'd all be everywhere on RUclips now but of course back in the 1990s to hear those was as you say correctly "hardcore"!
another day, another reason to be happy of buying a KATANA, I have the MKII head, i used it with my pc and headphones for a lot of time, now with the 2x12 matching cab, impressive sound but with a heavy bass.
The katana sounds close enough to record a solid tone. Without headphones I can barely tell the difference, with headphones I can tell but it’s still not off by much.
Its amazing how katana sound similar I have one since a couple of weeks and its perfect i dont need a lot of pedals in has a organic sound range clasis rock -metal, that japan amp kick ass valve amps , great job for boss.
In a live setting, both work great. Katana seems to favor treble a little more, but not enough to really care. I got a 5150 because I liked the Ivory color 😁 I find myself getting gear based on looks first more these days as I haven't run into problems tweaking the sound to my liking later. Great vid, showcases the great value you get from the Katana
I had a mk2, sold it....what a mistake. I just can't believe how good they are. I played mine thru a mesa 4x12 and it sounded amazing. I'd like to get the 2x12 combo they have, the katana that is
There is a bit more depth I hear from the tube amp but I have been helping people get tones for 40 years so I may have a bit more ear for the depth or complexity after all this time. Both sound great.
Did the 5150 sound better? In my opinion yes but only marginally, 5% at most. Can’t beat the katana for the money, especially in a mix where I’m guessing no one could tell. Great playing as always!
One like for the dancing birb. A slight bit more creaminess with the EVH but it's so close especially live I'd just just the Katana, pocket the difference and explore all the other Katana features.
I know it’s not metal and I don’t know if you dig that tone but I‘d love to see you recreate the tone of the Van Halen Balance album on the 5150. It just sounds so fat but I struggle a bit with recreating tones and controlling the gain on that one especially.
Katana is great. Considering it's 3-and-a-half times cheaper than a EVH 5150 50w head, and it has built-in effects, it's a winner! "Bark at the Moon" is one of my favorite songs. I am still trying to figure out how to play it. 😵💫😔
Hey, LambChopper, is that a Pineapple Conure at your right? Our resident Eclectus headbanger is ready for another session, as usual. Bird show at the end. LOL... Cheers, cobber!
from experience with having both, it might sound close on the recording but not so much in a room (maybe this patch does thought) but alas, will never feel as fun as playing a fiddy one fiddy
They are really similar and most punters won't hear the difference, although the 5150 sounds slightly better to my ears. I'd go for the Boss though. Its easy, can do any style and sounds fantastic, but SS amps are WAY easier to look after. Ive lugged around amps with tubes to gigs and because its hot here, and all the moving around of the amp, i find it damages my tubes and i don't get a consistant sound. For that reason alone i like the Boss products, and as time goes on they just get better and better as they tweak this newish technology.... cheers.
Out of the twp heads I'd go with the boss head. It as just that little bit better sound. The $5.98 EP I still have it on 12" vinyl and a few years ago I bought myself a long sleeve t-shirt of the $5.98.
The 5150 sounds just a tad smoother, i bet with some more eqing, you could make them sound exactly the same.... I'm buying this amp, it will be my first non tube amp is 30 years lol.
They sound really really close. Im super surprised they're so close. Also, if you are playing live where do you set the pre EQ? Is it part of the Katana PC or do you use a totally different unit?... cheers mate.
When you’re at home you have the katana plugged into the pc and make up all your presets in the tone studio. You can have 8 presets stored for live scenarios. You can only change the basics once you unplug it.
The Katana sounds better into its own cabs...there is a piercing high tone I hate coming through any cab with greenback or waza... I'm thinking of putting cream backs into my 2x12
They are almost the same tone. REALLY REALLY REALLY CLOSE. The only difference I can hear is when you swap to the the Katana it sound just a tad more muffled. The valves sounds very warm and brighter. Maybe an EQ thing but they are neck to neck.
Looking at getting one of these for low tuned thick heavy stuff like knocked loose, dying wish, peeling flesh. Just wondering if the boss kitana is good for that kind of a sound
I am thinking of getting a 5150 head. Is there much of a difference in terms of sound quality with the 50 watt and 100 watt versions? I want the 50 watt version because its cheaper and smaller
This is sort of off topic, but how do you get your tracking so tight (i.e how do you deal with audio interface latency when overdubbing, playing to click/drum backing etc)?
@@LambChopper678 Yea I get around 5ms RTL which is just about good enough for the fast riffs. I guess it's been a while since I actually tried multi tracking and maybe I had bad settings when I tried like 10 years ago :P. Will try again. Thanks for the reply!🤘
what are we gonna do in the future when the software isn't compatible with the katana anymore? lol... hopefully somebody is on the ball and keeps it updated and compatible.
Yep, I have some old rack gear that I run on an old laptop because the programs only run on Windows XP. Once the laptop dies I loose heaps of the programmability. 🤘
I can't figure out why both my 5150 and my Katana with my Two Notes captor loaded up with your marshall preset, sound like it has 1/4 of the saturation you get. I just got done swapping all my pre tubes, and biasing the amp to no avail. The only other thing I can think of is my interface. Perhaps the mic pres are different.
I hear this a fair bit. I don’t do anything to the input preamp in my interface. It’s at 0db Even when I just use the same settings live through speakers it sounds the same
Great video as usual! You should pick up a Marshall code head and give it a test and see what you can create! Love to see that amp with the lambchopper touch
hello mate, i just recieved mine, but once i plugged it in and turned the power on, i can hear humming coming out from the back of the head just under the power cable plug. is this normal noise? i have boss mkii 50ex. and it has literally zero noise when i power it on. any advice?

The tones are - as always - sublime, but the fact he let the cab play, so the birds could have some fun, is why LambChopper is the GOAT.
I wasn’t expecting the katana to sound that close to the 5150
During the A/B, I couldn't tell which is which - they both sound phenomenal. Great job setting the tone on both!
So much katana content on YT but it was seriously lacking on thrash/heavy metal until now!! I'm enjoying a lot this series, and I'm hoping to see a black album tone in the future. Thanks for the vídeo

Great comparison and playing! BOSS sounds super close wow. Love that your parrots hang out while you play, so nice! 🤘🎶👍👍👍⚡️
