This really bothered me and not for the reason most people would think. Bioshock Infinite creator Ken Levine while being interviewed said that he had seen some Elizabeth porn (rule 34, etc), and for people to stop doing that because Elizabeth felt like a daughter to him. Ok, fair point. However, he has no problem with her being violently tortured by an almost-lobotomy. This is a terrible message, but it’s a very American (our Puritan history) one. Elizabeth being shown nude (air having consensual sex) is bad, but her being tortured is acceptable. I almost threw up when I played through this, and have never revisited it, even though Bioshock Infinite is my favorite game of all time. Elizabeth deserved better (Paris!)

    • @Jarsia
      @Jarsia 2 года назад +7

@@Hackspear214 Yeah I heard about that, and I had to laugh. It's like "Ken, buddy, that ain't how the internet works".
To your point however I disagree. I don't think it's about being acceptable. It's supposed to be horrible, but horrible things happen, especially at the hands of the bad guys. This reminds me of a few years back people had a big problem with the X-Men Apocalypse poster showing Mystique being lifted in the air by her throat by Apocalypse, and people were saying it condoned abuse of women or some such.
The same people wouldn't bat an eye at say Professor X in the same position. Mystique is a heroine of the movie, if she's protected from having bad things happen to her, it puts a big asterisk behind everything she accomplishes. Suppose Luke and Leia's roles had been switched in star wars. Would Leia having her hand cut off "promote violence against women"?
If we're going to put women is prominent positions either as villains or heroes in games/comics/books/movies/tv shows, then you can't teflon coat them in plot armor so that they magically avoid anything horrible happening to them. If horrible things happen to male characters but female characters in similar situations always avoid them, it just comes across as pandering.

The scene in the elevator where Elizabeth tells Booker that he was her only friend is an amazing example of how emotions can be shown non verbally. She first reads what’s coming up and her face just freezes and shoulders slump down. Then she hears Elizabeth speak and a frown forms on her face and her eyes get sullen. The ‘ohhhh’ she says at this point is so heartfelt.

Elizabeth creates the union between the Big Daddys and the Little sisters. Elizabeth is the one who bequeaths Rapture to Atlas. Elizabeth gives the word of activation of control over Jack after seeing that he will be the one to kill him and save the Little Sisters.
Elizabeth is Bioshock, and her death hurts so much...

Burial at Sea Ep. 2 easily has one of the best endings to any video game, ever. TRULY ties the bow on the Rapture/BioShock saga. Elizabeth DID break the circle. She made sure that Rapture, Columbia... that all of it didn't end in complete pain and misery. She did good :')

    • @aleksandrh.4251
      @aleksandrh.4251 Год назад +1

No, she didn't. Not really. I mean, the circle has already been broken for the Rapture in Bioshock and Bioshock 2.
As I see it, devs made Elizabeth a mere small cog in the sub-story that had no need to exist at all. And to build that story, they made Elizabeth make morally questionable things, turned her into a broken person, tortured her and killed her.
Can't call it a nice job.

    • @Jacket01

To quote the Oracle from the Matrix:
"You've already made the choice. You're here to find out why you made it."
Elizabeth knew what she was getting into, and accepted the fact that even if she were to have the doors closed on her and forget everything, a leap of faith into the path she set for herself would make her feel all is right in the end.
That sense of comfort came in the form of Booker, until she let it dawn that it really was all her own choices being made.

  • @GriffinPilgrim

Loved the videos and thank you for the series. First play along I've watched. Great stuff favourite games. I'd add 2 things:
    - Elizabeth only punishes Comstock's, the one left, was already a dictator when stealing and beheading that Anna. It was the last one, that escaped.
    - "our" Elizabeth gets to live the life she always should have, as Anna, in the crib, in post credit infinite. That's how we the player, gets experience "what matters more, your part in the play, or the play itself ". We don't get to see it. But it happens
P.s if you have a sec look up removed infinite content. There's a desert, artic, and space lighthouse. The game was originally going to be so much bigger, or at least hint at even more cities.

Another thing in that scene is Atlas loses his Irish accent and begins to speak as Fontaine when Elizabeth angers him. He says " You're a regular hero ain't ya cant risk rippin the only part of ya worth a damn well there is more than one way to fry an egg" also there is post credit scene that showed the bathysphere coming down and the tail of the plane crashing into Rapture.

In all of the games it has always about the narrative which drew me into BioShock, so well written. Also the combat is just sooo satisfying, mixing up gun play , abilities and using the environment to your advantage. Infinite was the first game I played just days after its release, and enjoyed it so much I played again and again. Then promptly went out, bought and played the other two. It really does suck to see Elizabeth go from that innocent, care free girl in Battleship Bay to someone so consumed by revenge. But that said, it does work as a full circle story, and while tragic, Elizabeth's sacrifice ultimately did a lot of good.

Elizabeth died happy though. She knew that Jack would screw over Atlas and save Sally and all the other Little Sisters, and even though she die, she won in the end.
Sally got to live a happy life, thanks to Jack.

Been loving your videos. I haven't finished, so maybe you talk about this, but the scene with Daisy blew me away. I assume the Lutece's are omniscient like Elizabeth, so they give the pep talk to Daisy, but they also know future Elizabeth is in the duct. They're talking to Daisy, but also Elizabeth (and the player); you have a part to play, but you're not the hero here.

there is a theory that Songbird was a Booker that failed at first but by the look of it in BAS ep2 it might have been a dog since they were being tested who knows.

The ending was VERY bittersweet but I think it was fitting and Ken Levine honestly did a solid job at tying everything together. As sad as it is to see this Elizibeth die, she died at least knowing that she saved Sally and the little sisters in the long run and that Ryan and Fontaine would get their comeuppance and Raptures atrocities would come to an end because of her sacrifice. You can tell by the smile on her face at the end. She knew she made the right choice and that her death wasn't for nothing. Not to mention that there is STILL a timeline where Anna and Booker are finally together. I find all of that pretty comforting.

I’ve been playing the Bioshock series for a couple of years and it always makes me happy when others fall in love with it, you were amazing with the play through! You have made my mind race with all your theory’s throughout and you answered even some of my questions lol.
Also funny thing, universal has rights for making a Bioshock movie and we’re going to make it a pg13 lmao but yeah idea was scrapped and 2k games is still in process of the fourth game!

Your explanation of the Luteces seems valid because as you may remember they will tell you that they won't go away until you go first after the coin toss. Every time you interact with them and then walk away and then look back they're gone.
If you like this kind of stuff you may watch the German Netflix Series "Dark" in the original language when you don't wanna play games. It has also has some of this game concepts in it without spoiling it for you. Not very action packed but more emotional, personal dramas but will make your brain fry.

Hi Cyn, loved your play-through of the BioShock series and DLC. Ken Levine is a brilliant writer and I love the way the Burial at Sea DLC filled in so much of the history and lore that we were so familiar with. My biggest concern for a fourth installment of BioShock is that Ken Levine is not a part of it and, I believe, the writing is what made it such a unique series. I have my fingers crossed though and look forward to watching you play BioShock 4; you did a great job.

It makes sense, and it packs an emotional punch, and I do like how it all ties together. But I hate that Elizabeth died. Elizabeth was the heart of Bioshock Infinite, and I loved her. I hated to see her go out like that, bashed in the head by Atlas and dying, broken and bleeding at the bottom of the cold dark sea. It's brutal, and she deserved a better end, regardless of how well it worked. It still feels wrong on an emotional level. Even knowing that Jack ends up dealing out justice and redemption.

Even the dlc. Thanks so much it was fun to see your reactions to the series. Can't wait for the bioshoxk movie and hopefully one day a Bioshock 4. +1 sub & thanks for helping us fall in love with Bioshock again. Looking forward to watching more of your gaming. Also, my gf says she loves you lol XD. Keep it up!

I'm glad I found this playthrough of the DLC. (Not self-promoting) I just finished the main story in my own playthrough of Infinite and didn't have the DLC afterwards, and with how stressful Infinite's story is with all those christofascists being way too similar to those in our world today, I wasn't gonna go back to Infinite again anytime soon even if I got the DLC. So finding a Let's play online was the clear choice for me. Yours was very entertaining and you have really positive energy.
As for the ending, it was amazing as it was but as far as I'm concerned, infinite possibilities means infinite endings. I'm not an expert on string theory or science in general lol, but in my headcanon there's a timeline where Elizabeth never killed this world's Comstock because she believed it was even more punishing to make him remember and let him live with the guilt the rest of his days, but saves the girl. Gets her out of Rapture that way. That there's also a timeline where Elizabeth was successful in her interference towards Comstock's kidnapping attempt. I choose to believe those happy endings exist, we're just not privy to them.

Remember, they were telling us how Elizabeth didn't know why she set herself on this mission, why Sally was so important to her. I don't think she had no choice (maybe this final version of her didn't). I think her omniscient self (who died in the beginning of ep2) knew all that was going to take place, and why Sally was so important to introducing Jack. She set her future self on a pathway to taking down Rapture.

I've always told myself that quantum Elizabeth wanted to separate herself back into individual people in individual universes because she was sick of feeling the pain of every Elizabeth at once and just wanted to be mortal again like her dead father. This Elizabeth chose to sacrifice herself for a noble cause, like her father did. Maybe another saved Rapture from "Evil Jack" in the world where he harvested all the Little Sisters. Maybe another went to Paris and met Booker and Anna.

It hurts. It makes sense. And I take solace in the fact that there is still a reality out there where Booker raised Anna and they had a happy, normal life together.
I also have a lot of sympathy for the Luteces because they are eternally stuck as quantum beings who are trying to fix the mistakes they made in an never ending loop.
PS - The Last of Us is one of the few games with characters that I loved as much as I did those in the Bioshock series.

The ending of Burial at Sea inspired a lot of Bioshock veterans to go back and replay the first Bioshock, just so they could beat Fontaine to death. With a wrench.

when I was playing, the experience in min 1:28 made me sick, I'm not soft about violence and gory scenes, but I was so invested and so inmersed (full dark room and headphones), that I felt every second of it in my eyes, really terrible feeling, really impressive narrative.
