Hulk-Hogan syndrome... always positive, super-strong, always wins, always champion, never really has a personality beyond the act and people see through that shit in a heartbeat. At least with the heels it rings true and feels more genuine, with the "ultra-good" babyface, the audience above a certain age level sees through that and they enjoy a more nuanced character.

The irony is you act like wrestling babyfaces are transparent, but in reality you've only shown how transparent you really are. Fans don't enjoy the product anymore, they just enjoy hijacking the product and railing against the norms. Normally you cheer the faces and boo the heels but everyone wants to be like a wrestling fan hipster or whatever where they just pretend to be on the fringes of the community. It just leads to a bunch of bandwagon bullshit that you still see today. If wrestling has become unwatchable it's because the modern day fans are killing it.

The problem is that John Cena was forced down people's throat. Wrestlers who were being built to have a strong streak would always lose to Cena. Plus, Cena would have about 500 title matches instead of building up other wrestlers as champions. The 90's were great because they had multiple top guys.

Here is the thing with John Cena. The heels he was up against weren't particularly helpful. They kept going back to Cena vs Edge or Orton because they could not create effective heels. There wasn't anything about him that was relatable to the older audience. He was capable of better matches, which we saw later, but the bulk of his run was so cookie cutter. I got into wrestling around the time Cena was just turning babyface organically with the Thuganomics gimmick, around the time of his first US title win.
I remember for that first year he was the hottest thing on show besides Eddie Guerrero himself. I remember people didn't start booing him until after he won the WWE title and he went to Raw. In the beginning I think it was because the Thuganomics thing had run it's course, and you could tell that he was starting to be censored a bit on his raps anyway, though that had already started before they move him. Plus, rap music didn't exactly get over on Raw, for pretty obvious reasons (It's at this point you realize the wide majority of the Raw Roster at this time was white except for basically Shelton Benjamin. Everyone who wasn't a super duper muscular white guy ended up on Smackdown. Just an observation, not saying anything) so the rap gimmick got dropped fast for the Cena we know today.
This was in 2006. At this point it was only really the biggest smarks who booed Cena, basically to make themselves look really smart and edgy and grow their epeens on their favorite wrestling message boards. It was kinda fringe at first among the most hip of hipsters. Then One Night Stand happened, of which the crowd was basically entire of said hipster smarks, and it was suddenly way in fashion to boo John Cena, because everyone wanted to be cool like the cool kids who made it into One Night Stand.
After that it just became this meme that would not die. It was like a hipster indie rock band, or Linux nerds with Ubuntu, It was super cool until everyone discovered it, and now it is SUPER NOT COOL. And I think at this point a lot of those old reasons are so far gone in the minds of the people who want to boo him. The kind of people who say "JOHN CENA DOESN'T DO ENOUGH MOVES" were probably the same people who said "JOHN CENA SHOULD STOP USING THE SPRINGBOARD STUNNER!", and some of whom also probably love Puro, specifically King's Road style, a style which is built by guys who probably used even fewer moves. It was just an easy excuse that holds no water.
Another factor is John's longevity. You think about the biggest stars in WWE history, especially Austin and Rock, none of their runs with the company on top were actually all that long. People forget that peak attitude era was only MAYBE 5 years, that was pretty much all of Austin's run on top, a significant amount of which he spent injured.
But you think about Rock's biggest run as a babyface in particular, and how it ended. The fans were kind bored with the Rock, they thought he was SO OVERRATED and SUCH A TERRIBLE SELLER and all this, and they started booing him. And thats when Hollywood Rock became a thing, and he became a part timer. That was not that long after Austin left. But when he'd make his big returns years later, people loved him again.
Cena was the main event guy for over 10 years with basically no break, so people got bored with him, especially when he wouldn't change his character like Rock did when they started booing him. I think if he had taken more breaks, or been forced to by injuries, he might have been booed him less. Even just look at his return at The Garden during that Royal Rumble after his pec injury. That was an NYC crowd and they popped like crazy for him, and he wasn't even gone that long. Or his return as Thuganomics Cena at Wrestlemania with Elias. Or even when he (pretend) broke character on Roman Reigns, the crowd was immediately hot for him again.
I think history will be kind to Cena. Just like it was to Rock. I think people just need a long enough break from him to look at him objectively and realize he is actually amazing.

i think people in the business are taking it difficult to grasp the booing of Cena from a 100% fan standpoint. Those people booing did like Cena at one point, character wise. The thing is its when McMahon gets too complacent with a baby face and it becomes stale and boring, the 5 moves of doom and knowing that good talent were just going to get fed to Cena. its the result of the face booing of Reigns because we knew it was the new "baby boy" to make the company look good for investors not the fans.... We respect the workers but we are booing vince on his decision. We love you JR but idk why i never see anyone from the business talk about it from this standpoint its always about how we are booing in "trend" which yes exists but when you solely look at Cena and Reigns its the grasp Vince has on them and we all know Vince isn't about traditional story telling anymore and more for global presence and how non-wrestling fans see the WWE.

Let me clear this up for you, as a lifelong diehard fan who hasn't watched one second of live WWE programming since Undertaker vs. HBK Streak vs. Career. I saw a lot of upcoming talent and rehabbing injuries going through OVW pre-fame. (Lesnar, Orton, Bautista, Cena, CM Punk, others. Random Story: Lesnar was playing a bleach blonde Swedish tag-team wrestler with bright yellow gear who would hit a flawless Shooting Star Press almost every night, but the OVW ropes were very springy/loose like a boxing ring which I always wondered made him nearly kill himself against Angle in the botched attempt.)
Back to Cena... so, when he debuts in WWE, he's playing like a Vanilla Ice rapper who wears Reebok Pumps, jorts and chains. (I have no idea why you take a guy with a "perfect" Championship body and put him in a dumb gimmick, and I always wondered if Triple H or someone with similar clout saw him coming and tried to sabotage him.) At the time in WWE there were other main eventers using vastly superior, more aggressive overhead finishers, namely Angle and Lesnar who are also probably the most real-life accomplished wrestlers in the history of the business. Cena is effectively doing a fireman's carry into less perceived impact than a vertical suplex and the WWE is asking me to accept it as the Tombstone. The 5-Knuckle Shuffle is a disgrace to The People's Elbow on par with The Worm from Scottie-Too-Hotty, which was already a disgrace but we all winked with The Rock because we love him. He wasn't stellar on the mic yet, and due to his gimmick he didn't really chain wrestle. A high-impact Goldberg-style run would have made more sense, as no one can deny his physique, but I don't think Vince ever wanted another Ultimate Warrior situation.
Another issue was the complete lack of credible heels at the top of the roster during Cena's push. When Bret Hart/HBK were coming through, it seemed like everyone they faced was a giant unstoppable monster: Undertaker, Vader, Yokozuna, Diesel, Psycho Sid, even Bam Bam Bigelow. Cena and Orton had the Big Show and Kane, but they had put pretty much everyone over at that point. That left Cena with JBL, who the audience had seen for years as a mid-card (but solid) tag team wrestler. So instead, WWE went hard into having John Cena do things "no one ever thought possible" like making every legend on the roster tap out to ... William Regal's STF finishing move and overselling the FU (renamed the Attitude Adjustment.)
And he would just .. never lose. Like Hulk Hogan/Goldberg level *never* losing. Which would be fine, the entire business used to be that way, and I think Hogan lost less than 15x total in his WWE career. But from 2000-2005 there's like a million legacy champions handing it off to each other repeatedly: Austin, Rock, Triple H, Foley, Taker, Lesnar, Angle, HBK, Jericho, Booker T, Benoit, Guerrero, Edge, that's 13 off the top of my head and I haven't gotten to one yet that's a worse wrestler or had a worse finishing move or was worse on the mic than Cena, and yet Cena gets God status. A perfect example of the questionable booking was what I considered Cena's best match, he finally loses to HBK clean in a "who's the better man" rematch, except ... it's pointless, non-title, the night after WrestleMania where Cena (shocker) went over clean. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.
The other mistake they made (or ignored) was the massive and early booing from the audience at all of these things. They pretended that heat from the fans was an adjustment from the testosterone-filled Attitude Era returning to family-friendly PG programming. And sure that's part of it, but I would estimate 15%, not 75% or something. Or they thought Cena was just "so clearly the #1 guy that he gets a reaction from the crowd, no matter what!" as though Cena was driving us all to scream or cheer one way or the other. Let me be very clear: Cena is a Golden Retriever with weak moves and poor psychology, and he was never my Champion. The infinite 5-year push he got was the reason I left, and I've never come back. When the fans pointed out his moves were terrible and unpolished (aka You - Can't - Wrestle chants) they started adding "well respected wrestling moves" like the "Fisherman Suplex" and STF to his repertoire (Curt Hennig rolling over in his grave at the idea of calling that a Fisherman's Suplex.) The final straw for me was the military (I'm a Veteran) and when nothing else worked to get this guy over (which used to be the signal that he's NOT the guy,) they bathed him in the flag and camo and started having him salute like he was a warrior. The reason that worked with Hogan was Hogan was already Americana at the time. So I'll repeat what we tried to tell you in the mid-2000s: We've Cena 'Nuff.
And btw, I don't believe this podcast for a second. JR and Bret Hart know everything I just told you. The only reason they would ever act otherwise is they want to do more business with WWE in the future, which is sad since they're both Hall of Famers who made that place special in the first place and should always be welcomed back with open arms. ECW fans? Come on Bret. The guy went over everyone clean in Reebok Pumps and Jorts.

You know how people chant AJ Styles name, even when he’s doing an interview? Because they respect him. His ability. His talent. Fans cheered Rock & Austin for the same reason. Fans boo Cena because he was an average worker who was forced down our throats because he was “Vince’s guy”. Vince was trying to make another Hogan, Rock, or Austin and it didn’t work (for women and kids it did). And he’s been trying to do the same with Roman. Notice how fans don’t boo Rollins or Orton or Brock when they win multiple titles? Because fans respect them. Women and kids cheer Roman and Cena because they are the traditional “good guy”. But the fans who appreciate the work and talent and dedication of the wrestlers who earn their living in this grueling business, they cheer the workers who perform and earn the admiration of the fans. They reject the person “they’re supposed to cheer for” if they fell they haven’t earned it or been handed multiple opportunities because they’re Vince’s favorite.

He got better with time, but he was so boring, so generic, so not-compelling that I think his run at the top marked the beginning of the end for WWE. It wasn't just him, but he was the perfect symbol of the direction they were going. Roman is it now. WWE now wants to tell YOU who to cheer. People chanted You Suck at Kurt Angle for years, and I'm pretty sure towards the end, they didn't hate him. They appreciated his work. With Cena, I think he was the first in a long line of guys after the Attitude Era who were pushed against what the fans wanted. They were pushed before they were over. Yes, Cena is a babyface in the babyface Hogan tradition rather than of the Stone Cold variety. Granted, nobody is Steve Austin and never will be. When you have guys who the company insists on pushing that fans don't want to see, you're going to get backlash. We were spoiled to some extent in the late 90s, because Vince seemed to suck it up for once and push the guys who were getting themselves way over. That made him a billionaire. Once the Wars were over and he didn't need to have a modern, entertaining, intelligent product, things started to change. You had some bad, raunchy (as opposed to good raunchy) stuff in the mid 2000s, but Vince always wanted to be like Disney or McDonalds and market his product to kids. The only time he deviated from that plan was when it was either change or go out of business.

The bottom line is this, before him anyone that got the wrong reaction for their character changed. Hogan, Austin, rock, undertaker, even Vince McMahon himself. And the reason John gets more resentment than everyone else is because he didn’t change. He thought he was above the wrestling fans and he thought he was above his peers. And I’m sorry but if the fans can get sick of Hogan they can get sick of anyone. John is not so special that he should’ve been immune to the same things of those that came before him. I think fans boo John Cena because he turned away from a gimmick that fit him very well and was well received, then he just dumped it. Then it seems he feels he's too good to do a heel turn. Hulk Hogan went forever in the WWF as the hero. He had to leave in the mid-90's because that wasn't over anymore. He got new life out of being a heel in WCW and I loved it. It was something I had always wanted to see him do.
We all know it's scripted so we all know Hogan - outside of his power strokes backstage - wasn't really that person. And we would know if John Cena would ever turn heel he's just playing a role. I think it's a right of passage for the fans and a wrestler to have at least one heel turn in their career.
Also Cena is much like Rock and Austin and even Shawn Michaels - he's so over that he could turn heel but still have the backing of the fans like Austin did. No matter how many turns Austin had he was still over and that could still be true for Cena but he won't take the risk.
