Fun fact: Sega pulled half of the staff working on 06 to work on this game instead. So this game's existence is a major reason that 06 is so unfinished.
I read this just as I was trying to convince myself that Sega doesn't have an obsession with shipping unfinished games for some conspiratorial reason.

And this game still turned out terrible! Sonic and the Secret Rings is so far the only 3D Sonic Game I absolutely hate due to shitty controls. But I love Sonic Adventures 1+2, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, Sonic Generations, and Sonic Forces! I like Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Colors. And Sonic and the Black Knight, and Sonic Unleashed weren't bad.
I can't vouch for Sonic Lost World or Sonic Boom because I've never played them. But I want too!!! However, after all the pain and torment I suffered during my playthrough on my RUclips channel, I can safely say I absolutely despise Sonic and the Secret Rings!!!
I also don't much care for the 2D Sonic games much. Probably because Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on the GameCube was the first Sonic Game I ever played! So, I grew more accustomed to the 3D games, and after just the first level City Escape I was hooked, and instantly fell in love with Sonic Adventure 2 and just the blue blur in general!
To this day it remains my #1 favorite Sonic Game! Shadow the Hedgehog is my 2nd favorite, it's the only one I managed to get all A-Ranks on! And Sonic 06 is my 3rd favorite! (Yes you heard me right, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06 are my 2nd and 3rd favorite Sonic Games!!!)

SEGA knew everyone hated that, and that's why they added nunchuck support to Black Knight! That's why Black Knight was a better than Secret Rings! I had so much more fun with Black Knight than I did Secret Rings! But I had sooooo much more fun with Sonic 06 then I did in either Secret Rings or Black Knight.

also all-rounder, the quick high moves, and charger are amazing but you get them around level 22ish

I don't know if Danny and Arin will read this but next time you load up the game and you choose your rings (whether it be A, B, C, or D) press the button below equip called "custom" and see if that does anything, maybe you can use your skill points there, if you guys did read this thank you! And hopefully it does something!
it's really telling when someone who doesn't know about the game can figure out a key mechanic before the people playing the game
You have to custom your ring to activate the skills they're unlocking. "Skill points" is the amount you can spend on different skills, so you have to pick and choose

CartmanBrah yeah man, the Meg Mission is an unlockable which takes you to Quahog, and the goal is to spin dash into ten Family Guy douche bags in order to go out with her, unfortunately that Meg turns out to be an Egg Robo, and you have to constantly dodge cacti and purple plants and aim for its head to free the real Meg.

What is it with sonic games around this time being filled with arbitrary goals within levels that you have to complete in order to progress?
Seems like they were copying the structure from 3D Mario games like 64 and Sunshine...but it kinda actualy worked for those games
Honest answer, this was the era where they split the sonic development team in half to make Sonic 06 and Black knight (IIRC) simultaneously. So, either this half of the team was incompetent, or they weren't given enough time/money/freedom to make a game that reached beyond this arbitrarily basic scope.
Now everyone can see how ignorant you are congrats. Not every 3D sonic game sucks. The re-released version of Unleashed is more than decent, Sonic Colors is actually really good, Generations is also just amazing, Lost World has equally positive and negative reviews, how good the game is depends on what the controls do for you, Sonic Boom Fire and Ice is from what Ive heard fairly decent. Sonic 06 isnt nearly as bad as everyone puts it out to be, it's one of my favorite Sonic games. I hardly ran into any glitches myself, and the ones that do exist don't really affect gameplay on a larger scale unlike Boom and SA1. Both of those are the worst 3D Sonic games. SA2, Colors, and Generations being the best.

Don't get me wrong, I totally understand the frustration, as I played the game myself, knowing what you're talking about
and this not being the first GameGrumps Sonic playthrough I watch.
But by now I've come to realise, that they will either figure it out by some point by themselves,

or they complete the game without figuring it out, if that is possible.

DLC quest was more about buying stuff to progress, not basic functions like walking left. Also, Evoland can actually function as a game, while DLC quest was more of a satire or parody than anything else. You could blow through it in a couple of minutes

@@zombiecupcake.8485 There's tons of helpful skills, like being able to backflip without walking backwards at 1mph, or an ability that increases their speed after landing so they gain back their momentum after getting hit.
@@zombiecupcake.8485 yes, the skills are fucking incredible. The first skill you unlock is a dash that just lets you skip theough half the level.
@@zombiecupcake.8485 Mostly bitching at Arin. When I played this as a kid I remember the only "useful" skills being increase in maximum rings. I think you can also make Sonic go faster.
@@Nealuigi there is 2 or 3 speed boosters. Hyper Sonic being the fastest. It's 2nd fastest speed you can reach. The max obviously being the Speed Break when he gets the gauge later in the game.

His stories had giant birds called Roc's, an island where the still living are burying with their dead spouses, a cannibalistic giant cyclops that eats sailors, and of course they could just make versions of the monsters he fought in the old Ray Harryhausen films, like reanimated skeletons and the golems created by that one Sinbad films bad guy who was played by Tom Baker.

The more and more I see of this, the more I realize just how much Black Knight actually improved the level designs/controls of the storybook series. Like, I think it has problems and I'm one of the few people that really like it, but blimey, I can't imagine what it would be like with controls like this, ugh.
Masterof thelag when i played the game the controls were pretty easy to use and that’s coming from some one who played in in elementary school. I actually found the game fun despite wanting to move sonic forward on my own
I played both Black Knight and Secret Rings, and Secret Rings is a masterpiece compared to Black Knight.
Not that bad, it is if you compare it to games that are new. The only annoying thing is that the momentum of it is weird but i like the bosses in the game

Yeah you'd initially think from the opening cutscene that Sonic was gonna have this cool fire power or something but it literally just serves as a time limit to provide tension for the story.

Honestly, no idea what that means: "custom option on the rings". I think I'm in Arin's boat on this one. Some games he misses over incredibly obvious stuff but I don't think that's one of them.
when you have the choice to choose one of 4 skill rings, below the "equip" option, is a "Custom" button

I've noticed that whenever Arin begins to play any sonic game, he loses all common sense. I don't know if he's doing it on purpose to make the game look worse than it actually is or not

Dude I have a feeling that Sega paid off all of those game reviewers. This game is NOT an eight out of 10. Also I completely lost it when Aaron ran into the cactus 🌵 in the beginning the video 😅😂
When Arin kept dying at the catapult and then hit the thing at 9:40 I legit laughed my ass off for like 5 minutes. Didn't laugh so hard watching Game Grumps since Sonic and the Black Knight. Thanks for playing this game guys, this is amazing.

Because as we all know, a menu to equip unlocked skills has always been a central mechanic to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
To be fair, the game isn't great at introducing that.
