  • Joan Durrant is a child clinical psychologist and professor with the University of Manitoba. She has done extensive research on the effect of physical discipline on children, and she is a strong advocate for positive parenting and violence-free childhoods. She also studies the role of law, human rights frameworks and public education in preventing child maltreatment.
    Cheryl Milne is the Director of the Aspen Centre for Constitutional Rights at the University of Toronto and is a fierce legal advocate for children’s rights. She led the 2004 Supreme Court challenge with the Canadian Foundation for Children, Youth, and the Law, which resulted in restrictions against using corporal punishment. She recently received the Ontario Law Society Medal for her contributions to legal education and advocacy for children’s rights.
    This presentation and discussion was filmed in April 2023 in support of Bill S-251 and the 18th attempt to repeal section 43 of Canada's criminal code.
