- Doc Holliday was the Robin to Wyatt Earp’s Batman; by his side whenever the going got tough, pistol in hand, ready to go out in a blaze of glory. Their friendship became a legendary tale of the Wild West, depicted in many books and westerns.
Holliday didn’t necessarily act this way out of sheer bravery or an undying sense of loyalty, but for a more tragic reason - he knew that he was a doomed man, anyway. Stricken with tuberculosis from an early age, before he even met Wyatt Earp, Holliday understood that he was living on borrowed time, so he chose to live it like a man with nothing to lose. In the process, he became one of the greatest icons of the Wild West.

Love Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday in "Tombstone", don't know how accurate it is historically, but it is the image I always think of when thinking of him.

Doc was one of the most legendary gunslingers in the old west. His involvement in the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, alongside the Earp brothers, cemented his reputation as a formidable gunfighter.

My father had TB at the age of 19 his doctor told him go west it will help , and it did , but he still ended up in a TB sanatorium at age 23 in Montana . Culture shock for a kid from Alabama .

Before it was discovered that Tuberculosis was caused by a bacterium many people believed that it ran in families, probably because of how long the disease can lie dormant after infection. You could be infected for years and not know it. Even after the true cause was discovered it was still tragically easy for family members living in close quarters to spread it to each other. Tuberculosis can affect any organ in the body but active pulmonary tuberculosis is the only kind that’s contagious, although before pasteurization there was a chance of contracting bovine tuberculosis from drinking infected milk (seriously, don’t drink raw milk unless you reeeeeeally trust the person you’re buying it from)

"Doc Holliday Days" are held yearly in Holliday's birthplace of Griffin, Georgia. Valdosta, Georgia held a Doc Holliday look-alike contest in January 2010, to coincide with its sesquicentennial celebration.
Tombstone, Arizona also holds an annual Doc Holli-Days, which started in 2017 and celebrates the gunfighter-dentist on the 2nd weekend of August each year. Events include gunfights, a parade, and a Doc Holliday look-alike contest. Val Kilmer, who played Doc in 1993's Tombstone, was the grand marshal in 2017 and Dennis Quaid, who played Doc in 1994's Wyatt Earp, was the grand marshal in 2018.
