    I prefered the sound of the old model -yes the new speaker more hi frequency detail and transparency but I find the 685s2 more listenable also the front port makes them much more versatile in placement.
    On criticism of the 685 S2 was a bump in the 3k frequency range that made them come across a bit "shouty".
    DSP in Roon easily fixed this and makes a good speaker great won't be upgrading anytime soon.

    I bought 606 two months ago and have to say this speakers are "Bright". After more than 100 hours of "Break In" which I played very high/low frequencies files, they sound much much better. Very clear high and mids. Bass is subtle, not punchy. Though many may not like this "New Sound". I am using NAD C368, a class D amp and going to add a Class AB power amp soon. Hoping to give more power and warmth sounding to the speakers.

      the difference is clear in the video in person naturally much greater. The new 600 are much clearer and cleaner sounding speakers from top to bottom.
      They sound less heavy and congested which essentially means they are lower distortion speakers.
      Bowers have done this without increasing the price by much which is great when you think about it

    So paper cones are quicker and offer a seamless transition into the mid-range (@ 21:48) for the multi-way speaker, and for the two way speaker (@ 6:00) the (non paper) continuum cone offers more expression and is better?
    Wouldn't the 2 way cone (operating over a greater BW) require the "fast" attributes of a paper cone as they have been described; given it must produce the mid and low range frequencies?

    •  5 лет назад

      The paper cones are for the low end, the mid-range is still continuum.
      The mid-range cone has changed from kevlar to continuum (a composite.)
      The bass-range cone has changed from aluminum to paper.
      As for whatever paper are better (or worse) I can't tell but I know that my 603S2 have paper so clearly they have found some reason to go with aluminum before. Then again it wouldn't surprise me if it's sometimes just marketing purposes.
      You are comparing continuum vs paper something they have never done. They compared paper to aluminum. And continuum to kevlar, which on Slashgear is described with:
      "Like Kevlar, Continuum uses a woven composite structure. However, B&W says that the material - which took eight years to develop - sounds better than Kevlar because its flexibility is more controlled. That way, the speaker firm says, there’s less of an abrupt shift from pistonic action to break-up."
      www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/1103364-anyone-else-think-paper-cone-speakers-sound-better.html
      John Dunlavy if I understand correctly: "Likewise, what are often referred to as "paper cones" are not paper but a complex, proprietary blend of 'pulp, binders, carbon fibers, etc.'"
      I won't read all hits: www.google.se/search?q=paper+vs+aluminum+drive

      @StormCentre88 5 лет назад

      @ OK - no problems.
      Jim Stanley; electronic, electrical and acoustical engineer. PhD.

    •  5 лет назад

      @@StormCentre88 The title doesn't change that the paper cone is replacing an aluminum one whereas the continuum is replacing a Kevlar one. The reference is what was in the speakers before the new models. They haven't claimed paper are better than continuum (though feel free to question why not using the same material for everything. Then again the tweeters isn't made of the same material either so my _assumption_ would just be that some materials may be better for some frequencies or sizes or possibly be more usable to hit the price point you want to hit.

    • @StormCentre88
      @StormCentre88 5 лет назад

      @ Fair enough.
      But also nothing that you/they have said changes the fact that a driver operating over a greater BW can benefit from a lighter (paper) cone also; and there seems to be no clear test/other from B&W data on how/why the choices of differing cone material benefits each B&W speaker.
      Particularly within the context the different materials offering a “seamless transition” into the mid-range (@ 21:48) for the multi-way speaker, and “more expression” (@ 6:00) for the two way speaker using the (non paper) continuum cone?
      If you look at my initial comment I was basically saying/inferring how can these different materials exhibit attributes that both justify their technical use and can be explained within the contexts of “seamless transitions” and “more expression”.
      I like the company B&W, but would be interested to know the technical answers to my questions.

      that is because its layering the levels of the sound mix more on top of each other which always results in the middle of the musical image being fuller or thicker.
      Better sound is more evenly balanced across the whole soundstage and that allows the soundstage to form with better clarity from left to right etc and sounds better across all music styles rather than seeming to suit some not others.
