I have been listening to and following Mike Rowe for years and this has to be one of my favorite interviews. The fact that this conversation on cancel culture is getting more traction is a light at the end of the tunnel.
@@millwork3319 OK, lets look at Mikes example at 32:20 (Chris Harrison). Rachael Kirkconnell came under fire for several racist actions including racist social media posts and bullying girls in high school. Also she attended an Antebellum South plantation themed fraternity formal. *She posted a public apology for her past behavior, calling her actions "ignorant and racist", and pleaded with people not to defend her.* Harrison tried to defend her actions. Harrison apologized admitting that he was excusing and defending racism. After consulting with Warner Bros and ABC he announced that that he will be stepping down. You can say that he stepped down because of pressure but ultimately it was a corporate decision because it would have cost them viewers and MONEY! PEOPLE ARE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS
Since you've been given so much free advice anyway... 😂. Consider cutting the cord to Fox News and stop donating to the RNC or any colleges/universities and instead donate or subscribe to your favorite RUclipsrs. The amount poor young people can learn from Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, Tim Pool, Mike Rowe, etc., is greater, more truthful, and more inspiring than universities. Hopefully, the authority to "credentialize" will be won back by Godly, moral, humble people, for those industries that require credentials.

As a former high school teacher and university graduate assistant who taught freshmen, I am gratified to hear this young woman who is courageous and mindful that a four-year degree from ANY college or university is not always the right choice for every high school senior. And of course, she is preaching to the choir with Mike. Let's hope and pray our younger generation realize the importance of free speech and freedom before it's too late. Love u Mike!!
She is talking the truth! I'm 67 years old, and I try my best to indicate books to my friends' grandchildren, 15 to 20 years old, and at least of 50% look at me with a surprised look....books !? .... I'm also an only child that my parents had fun teaching me to read when I was 3 years old, and I loved it. What about when Israel tries to literally cancel the Palestinian population? And its paid or unpaid agents here in the United States try to cancel free speech?
10:53 When Mike said "they're worried to death" it almost brought tears to my eyes (I could feel them welling up). Yes, we are VERY concerned about what's being done to our kids.
44:30 Mike mentions dragging statues down. It triggered my memory of the day (10/12/20) people here in Portland tore down the statue of Abraham Lincoln. I just remember thinking, "We're way beyond Confederate soldiers now".
The Either rewrote history and spoon fed us their narrative or it's the opposite. Either would somewhat possible.Lincoln wasn't a great man. He became a myth. Lee the same way. Actually stayed drunk. Hmmmmm
I'm in a college town on the south side of the same state, and remember around that same year seeing an old statue of Abraham Lincoln beheaded in our local park. I thought, 'wow, are there some racists that came through this town?' Picturing some old school kkk types. Wasn't until 2017 and all that happened with Bret Winestein and Evengreen State came out that it dawned on me it was the racist af students who did it. Strange how it went unnoticed until it couldn't be ignored.

Laura Ingalls Wilder has been taken off book awards for Indian...excuse me native american...hate. What? when books glorifying child rape are thought genius and all these pronouns?WHAT THE HELL. It is more difficult for you than us older folks (53, myself) to speak and turn against the tide. You must, at some point, or lose your integrity, but do so respectfully and smartly. No screaming, no personal attacks. I don’t completely agree with Jordan Peterson, but he is a good (not perfect) example of how to oppose without attacking. Remember a key word from this podcast - grace. May the Lord bless you. Shalom.
Great discussion Mike and Rikki! A lot was about free speech. I believe %100 for free speech which is a right guarantied by the US constitution. However, ones speech may come with consequences. For instance, if you make derogatory remarks about your boss, you just might get fired. The first amendment only protects us from Government retaliation.

Mr. Rowe, I really, really enjoyed your straightforwardness during your interview with Ms. Schlott! Well done, Mr. Mike Rowe! Please keep up the exceptional job that you are doing!
Blessings y’all, from this old man in northeast Tennessee. Awesome content and awesome topics…TRUTH. I definitely agree with you about Rikki. I pray that she will become a leader within those who will restore our failing nation.
I"ve noticed my own attention span regarding watching movies on youtube, if I'm not into it around the 10 minute mark....swipe...next. It is definitely a habit we all have picked up and do whether we realize it or not. Im 66 and did not grow up in front of computers.
I think though that there's a difference between not being interested in something and moving on vs having the attention span of a gnat. I won't continue engagement with something that doesn't interest me, and that was a huge problem for me in school. If I didn't enjoy the subject or the teacher was awful, I didn't do well. If the subject was interesting or the teacher was amazing, I did very well. Watching tv, RUclips vids or reading books is the same. I'm not going to waste my time with something I don't like and I think it's foolish for people to do that. I'm basing my observation of you on a comment, but it sounds to me like you're not being foolish, but you invest your time and attention on what interests you. To me that's a much better management of time and energy.
There's too many options. Makes concentration hard. Maybe? When we're looking for answers, in movies, I think it's because that's how we learned all this stuff over our lifetime. Looking for solutions within solutions
You never know where genius will come from. I went to a public HS. A classmate of mine wrote 5 published novels (which I didn't know about at the time) and started a wild animal rescue project while we were in HS. She just quietly had an incredible passion for doing these things, but to know her, she seemed like a regular classmate. It was only after I got older I realized how special she was.
How Bizarro World is it that Counter Culture are now young people, like Rikki Schlott, who, in my time, were "the normal kids". It's people like her that give me hope for the future. Woke Culture will be a period of history that we'll look back at in shame and shock that things were allowed to be nurtured into insanity. God bless the Rikki Schlott's. They're out there...and THANK GOD for that.
Great interview - Beautiful and intelligent - Rikki is giving me hope for her generation - getting the book - Mike - she needs to a a recurring guest - more books to come I’m sure 👍
Listen to you Mike a lot and for some time. I love this interview more than most. I have a teenage son and I am in my 50s. Her explanation for many things helps me understand things my son is up against. Thank you ! More people like this !
You can also tell how "Self Aware" she is and confident! I wish more people were like that. Very impressive girl! She'd better be making something in the 6 figures at least! The problem is... Smart people don't always understand their value, and they're not always "IN IT" for the money! They're in it to gain more knowledge! Because, "KNOWLEDGE IS POWER"! The more you know, the more you're enlightened! It's a spiritual thing, more than a worldly thing! Don't worry about THIS LIFE! Worry about the NEXT!
I remember working with a gal in the 80’s who was dedicated to help herself with assertiveness and self expression. She combatted her fears and rose out “of the ashes” quite successfully. However, now that she was confidently expressing herself and opinions, she was surprised that people might disagree with her because she was using her words and accomplished something for herself . Forgot the prize was her advancement and confidence, not convincing everyone that they agree and jump on board with her opinion! Ahhh, simple times
The paradox of tolerance, A tolerant society should NOT tolerate intolerance (or in this case cancel culture). When we extend tolerance to those who are openly intolerant, the tolerant ones end up being destroyed, along with tolerance. As paradoxical as it may seem, defending tolerance REQUIRES not tolerating the intolerant.
At first I thought to myself, why is Mike interviewing Rachel Gilmore. Well, I thought I would give her a chance. 5 minutes in I was in shock. Rachel finally gets it. She has seen the light. It wasn't to much later I realized this wasn't Rachel but an extremely smart and articulate Rikki Schlott. Glad to get to know her and thanks for the great interview.
There's a difference between a squeaky wheel and a wheel that needs to be replaced. Yelling FIRE in a crowded theater may 'technically' be free speech but if you do it you're going to pay a big price. These are things I was taught as a youngun. These are the things I believe are fundamentally forgotten nowadays. At 68yrs old with a lot of rough hard and muddy dirt roads behind me , I think the future of not only the USA but the world as a whole is looking a lot dimmer. Sad thing.
Rikki, You are a breath of fresh air and common sense in this crazy world. I appreciate your bold and direct approach while still trying to be reasonably diplomatic even though the topics are already so over-the-top. Thank you for your perspective because at 23 you are bright, articulate, and actually quite relative to all of the situations involved in this conversation. As a parent of 6 non-biological kids, your "Gap-Year" advice is both heartbreaking and essential for all parents and high schoolers who are getting so over-pumped with preparation plans and pressure. School guidance councelors are still so driven to keep kids in the "Education Loop" even though a majority of them are only doing things to please the people around them and the online influences yapping about. Wonderful conversation!🤙
@@terry9238 They are not adopted and all individuals from other families. Some call me dad others don't. I call them my kids because they needed to know they belong somewhere. They are all from broken homes. Some from state services and others before they became wards of the state. I chose to treat as my own. They all understand who they are.
Finally , a headline I agree with or better yet nailed the headline to be so real with the topic. Thank you . Loved the prospective views. The word grace rang the bell for me to listen and put my common sense filter in place. Her advice to future parents rings so true as does the discussion about educational reform. So needed. Thank you.
A couple of years ago I was scrolling through Tiktok and realized that my attention span was gone. I uninstalled tiktok and downloaded several episodes of the Joe Rogan podcast. Mainlining 3 hour podcasts to get it going again.
Love hearing from Rikki. I agree with here dropping in and out of college, personally not enough energy to jump the hoops to be able to drop in for classes as when I was younger they demanded I take crap classes before taking what I wanted to learn. Instead lived in libraries tried talking to students and found they hadn't read what I had, were only there to party. With the pronoun thing, now 66 so have no qualms to say he, she, it... you don't claim he or she? Then you are IT. If that hurts your feelings that is not my concern, you are not that special, make a choice and move forward.
She is brilliant. I'll add, cancel culture is the inevitable outcome of political correctness. We all to some degree bowed to PC and this gave it's proponents the confidence to move on to CC. Keep in mind that PC had it's roots in communist Soviet Russia. It seems that we now have that same philosophy being manifest throughout the West. The "long march" has succeeded, for the moment. Luckily Nikki and many in her generation are speaking out and saying NO.
Yes! Kiddo, study whatever you are Interested in and Don't Worry about Accreditation. I NEVER PAID FOR MY EDUCATION. I would Pick a Course and Introduce myself to the Professor and ask to Survey their class. I studied Poli-Sci and Business at 2 different IL colleges, as Well As The Art Institute and the Graphic arts Institute 🎉
I love and agree with the conversation with exception to your comment about Libs of Tik Tok because all they’re doing is publicizing what is being put out there. I do not believe they are suggesting anyone to be cancelled, simply making known what is being put out there. There is a HUGE difference.
My thoughts exactly. I don't have Tiktok but everything I have seen about "Libs of Tiktok" is simply reposting videos that others have posted with maybe a text banner or "headline". From my perspective I don't understand the hate, I thought the entire idea of posting on Tiktok was to get people to watch what you posted, or to make a statement about an issue you feel deeply about, it's not "libs of Tiktok" problem if what you posted, many people find idiotic, moronic, juvenile or just plain "WTH" at least the video or statement you posted gave you more exposure.
God I wish Mike would run for President. While I know he probably wants NOTHING to do with that god awful position and what comes after. I feel this country desperately needs a leader that can actually form a sentence and it not leave the listener feeling saddened more and more for our countries future.
Hillsdale College in Hillsdale MI is the answer to the higher ed nonsense. It takes no government money, so it doesn’t have to comply with all the government mandates of the 99 percent of the colleges that do. It is not a religious or church affiliated school; just a great place where liberal arts are still liberal arts and the education of young minds is paramount. The Founding Documents are also part of the curriculum.
I think in contrast to tiktok killing our attention span, I'd offer up that we also have videos like this one here... also podcasts. I have youtube premium, and I purposely seek out longer videos and listen to them in the background while I work or do other things. Once again, it's up to parents and families to instill positive habits into their children, and that includes helping them learn how to process and how to enjoy information.
An interview with a youngster that gives me hope for our country, Mike. Thank you for bringing it to us. Rikki, you are an inspiration ! Such wisdom and foresight at such a young age ! Continue to march. My only criticism is trivial. The mouth and eyes are the two things that we read in facial features. Rikki, lose that mic you were speaking into or move your camera slightly to the side. Your mouth was hidden from view through most of your conversation with Mike. To all 3 of you, thanks for the presentation.
A person has a right to speak their opinions out loud. I, however, am not required to continue associating with them. I believe that also applies to prospective employers or other private actors.
The thing about free speech is that you should have the right and freedom to say whatever you want as long as you understand that may be some social consequences. But as Mike pointed out the consequences have to contemporaneous and in context with a real, intended offense and not some perverted interpretation of offense.
@Mike Rowe, this is one of your most educated interview that I felt like it resonated with me as my husband and I deal with our 4 children estranging from us completly, it is going on 3 years. :/ and from what Rikki shared about the culture she is surrounded with, sounds like what we are experiencing not just with our own children, and btw we are not the only one dealing w/ estrange children from good well raised supportive parents, but with where we work. @Rikki Schlott, one, your parents should be very proud of you. You have a great head on your shoulders. Your point of views through your generation and older generation is an eye opener. And I can't say enough that this interview hit the nail on the head about what is going on. Life was SO much simplier back then. How did it become this complicated. Wait, I know... technology. :/. I am going to read your book Rikki. I wish this interview was sooner. I wasted a lot of time and money on a degree that got me absolutly nothing with the job field that I lined myself in, which is what I thought I wanted to be in- healthcare administration. My GPA and degree was not good enough when I applied for jobs. I now have a $40,000 student loan for nothing :/ . Now when people ask me if I want to go for my masters, I am like hell no! Those insitutions will not get another penny from me! I will take a course, like you RIkki when I want to and pay for that course. That is how it should be done. Not take those 'block' of courses for the title of the course. How does taking 2 chemistry courses work in with healthcare administration/management? Sigh! take care and keep sharing your knowledge with us.
This estrangement by offspring is indeed rampant. My sister was asked a question in a pageant in the early 1970s about the generation gap. She said that there was not one in our home. We had differences of opinions, but never thought that it should separate us. Tearing apart families tears down a people group/country.
Finally a real conversation on speech. There is such thing as prudent speech which does not curtail free speech but merely supports respect to voice strong opinions where disagreeing runs strong. There is never a time when civility is wrong. If people have to spew abhorrent violent language/harmful actions/violence, to support their positions this is not to be tolerated. This is not what free speech supports. Comes my question, what was the percentage of non-students actually causing the issues as opposed to registered actual students? There is a problem of infiltration to escalate these actions into violence from outside sources.
This young lady, gives me hope! Fantastic!
Wow! imagine a right wing nut telling a right winger what they want to hear and you approving. Cancel culture is BS

Exquisitely articulate! Such a breath of fresh air. Love this woman!!!
I just very old...and sad. But kudos to this young woman!
If you're really that old, why don't you use the correct grammar?
You sound like a hillbilly...
Kelly your not old your still open and learning our biblical forefathers were just getting started at 90 years old you have much to give
@@Dh4v0c I'm well educated and articulate, but I don't proof often. Cut people some slack. We got the intent.
@@janethollinhead1874Amen!
Beautiful soul.
This interview just made me realize that I would love to see Mike interview Konstantin and Francis!
I’m going to have to check out both of those books. What a great interview and what an intelligent and well-spoken young woman!
Brilliant. Just brilliant
How about no 'cancellation' and instead, debate.
Wow, what an amazing thoughtful young woman. I'd hire her, and she would surely exceed my expectations.
Rikki Schlott is bold, brilliant and beautiful minded. Reminds me of Lisa Boothe. ❤
This is a beautiful conversation. Grace.
Sad thing.
Rikki,
You are a breath of fresh air and common sense in this crazy world.
Why even refer to your kids as “non biological”? What’s the point?
@@terry9238
They are not adopted and all individuals from other families.
This young lady gives me hope for the next generation. I will be buying her book.
Keep your roll rolling!!
A breath of fresh air you are!
So articulate...very impressive young lady😊
😳I had no choice but to like and subscribe when I was asked in song!🤩 Long time fan of Mike😎👍
Very pretty and extremely smart young lady. Amazing what happens when your eyes and ears are open and working.
Informative conversation
What a great conversation to have.
Fascinating: Adult, Mike Rowe, asking for the opinions of a child-adult. Very interesting.
From my perspective I don't understand the hate, I thought the entire idea of posting on Tiktok was to get people to watch what you posted, or to make a statement about an issue you feel deeply about, it's not "libs of Tiktok" problem if what you posted, many people find idiotic, moronic, juvenile or just plain "WTH" at least the video or statement you posted gave you more exposure.
this was a awesome talk thank you 🙂
Thanks for the show guys 🍻 🇦🇺
Mike Rowe for president
Rikki, I just bought your book (audio). Can't wait to hear it.
This is a great conversation.
Such an intelligent woman.
It has been a long rare time since I've heard or met such a fascinating mind. And to find it at the NY Post staff, is totally incongruous.
She is a sharp young woman, that gives me hope in her generation.
Defaulted to page 6 menrality is a great quote.
What a smart, independent, thinking, young lady
