@@KPassionate I just looked it up and no they are not close but maybe thousands of years ag they were somehow connected. @@wanaraz yes they are related to dogs, but they are more closely related to bears than they are to dogs. They split from the other “caniformes” about 50 million years ago not a couple thousand years ago, so they aren’t that closely related, their closest modern relatives are thought to be musteloids like weasels, raccoons, skunks, Etc.

Very interesting video. I never thought of Walruses as a remarkable animal before but now I am truly starting to see they are amazing and very unique animals.
I recently became enamored with walruses after learning some about the mothers and their calfs. The relationship between the two just looks so sweet and human-like. (And as a mom who regularly swam with my two year old who couldn't swim, I personally related a lot to swimming while the baby takes a ride. 😂) The main thing I wonder about is how to help protect the Arctic. I don't even know much about the issues there, but all the animals are so fascinating and it seems so sad that climate change is having such an intense impact there.
Hi! Thanks for the comment. I love watching mother walruses teach their young how to swim as well. It's incredibly endearing. I also share your concern about protecting the Arctic, especially since most of my work has been with Arctic species like walruses, polar bears, beluga whales, and recently Arctic foxes. The good news is there are actionable steps you can take to help them. First, and probably the most important, is to vote and support politicians and public officials who, at the very least, acknowledge that human driven climate change is real and is a threat. The second and very underrated thing we can all do is simply talk about it. Studies have found that a majority of people from across the political spectrum are worried about climate change but are "self-silencing" because we think we're in the minority. Third, you can support organizations on the front lines of the climate change battle who are advocating for these animals. One of my personal favorites is Polar Bears International, which I'll link below. polarbearsinternational.org
Girl, who are you? You are amazingly gorgeous and intelligent. I wish I were one of those marine mammals that you tame with such care, love, and devotion. Kudos to you.
As a supporter of this kind of research, I've recently been asked about a viral clip on Instagram of Balzak learning and practising the different sounds being taught to him. From this RUclips video I was able to clearly explain things like why his tusks were capped and why he was learning these various sounds. I was able to properly justify why certain things in the clip were the way that they were in the comments section, but something that came up in my discussions was the releasing of these animals back into their natural habitat. What warrants a Walrus being brought in and require training? And when does a Walrus at an Aquarium get released back into the wild?
He and his sister have never been in the ocean. They were born in a Canadian zoo. They have no chance of survival if they were released. Nor do I believe they would enjoy struggling for survival in the unforgiving ocean. Their current lifestyle is very pampered lol. Thanks for your advocacy and for a great question! It’s important to ask these things.
When I understood what the tusks were made for some light came out of my room’s ceiling as I’m no longer ignorant ❤ loved the video and the great models posing in it
Are walruses entirely their own thing that parallel evolved the back flips that turn under like sea lions and fur seals, or did they branch off from a common ancestor awhile back? Obviously, they can't do the crazy mountain goat level climbing that some of the smaller fur seals and sea lions can do, but it looks to be structurally similar.
It's a tough call for my second favorite. Probably either sea otters or false killer whales. I have several sea otter videos on my channel but I haven't done one on the false killer whale yet. Thanks for asking!
I love walruses! :D I have a plush walrus named wally and i do this silly voice for him. He likes coffee and calls it magic bean water ^^ My mom actually had a dream where he was a farmer lol. It was funny ^^

I love pinnipeds and i honestly ignored walruses i focused on seals and eared seals, but your video made me curious about walruses do thank u ♥️🦭, and i have a question how walruses mate how this season looks like ?
Mating takes place underwater and away from the shore and pack ice. So we don't really know much about it because it is difficult to observe. What we do know is that the males display visually and vocally by making clanging bell-like sounds, pulses, and clicks under water, and teeth clacking and whistles at the surface. Females will leave the ice to join a displaying male in the water.
What are their personalities like? Balzak seems like he likes you beyond the yummy treats you dispense. Are they similar in temperament to any land mammal we're all familiar with? They give off a cow/dog aspect, but I admit that could come entirely from their appearance.
He does like me. I raised him during his formative years 😂. They are usually known for being quite unpredictable and cantankerous but Balzak and Lakina and usually quite good.
I found out the answer so you don’t have to. The reason why they have the metal thing on their exterior teeth is this:
Unlike the rest of their teeth, walrus tusks lack protective enamel. This makes them vulnerable to cracking, chipping, and breaking. Especially in the wild. Because of sinking sea ice, it's becoming more and more common for walruses to haul out on land and rocky beaches which are far less forgiving than ice. A damaged tusk can lead to a life threatening infection because the roots of a tusk grow deep into the sinuses and very near to the brain.
Ha! Honestly, I've grown a little tired of this question and have resorted to cutting and pasting the answer. Thanks for noticing! And watching ;-)
