      I see the point and I agree but I believe the producer of the Witcher, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich even said in an interview that they were going for a show that pleases an audience that is already familiar with the universe to whatever extend (since there is video games too). I actually only really got into the Witcher and started reading the books because the show was kinda vague but still very interesting and I wanted to know more about it. So for me personally it didn't fail entirely 😅😊

    After LotR everyone copied LotR (big battles, dark lords, wizards). After GoT everyone will copy GoT (edgy, "dark", political, dragons). These companies think that the best way to succeed is to rip off what's successful, but that literally never works.

    This is why I think that most High/epic fantasy book series would be better adapted as animated shows. They'd have enough time to properly tell the story without having to spend a shit ton of money on realistic special effects. Castlevania is proof of how good animated fantasy adaptations can be if done well.

    • @martyr_lightsilver1833
      @martyr_lightsilver1833 3 года назад +4

      I've been saying this for years and I don't know why animated book adaptations aren't a thing. There is such a large market opportunity there, but for some reason, these companies seem really reluctant to adapt a story in a 2D medium.
      Hell, any book series that isn't super grounded would work amazingly as an animated series simply because the medium is more abstract and dynamic. Plus the fact that a lot of tropes, scenes, and characters don't translate well into live action. You would think, that a book, being an experience that is highly imaginative and abstract, would be adapted into a medium that can be stylized and manipulated to reflect those attributes into a visual medium.
      But no. As for why no one has capitalized on this huge market, it's beyond me. The ever expanding influence of anime in the West is proof that such a demand for adult animation exists here. We have so many amazing, niche IPs of our own that we could use to compete with Japan by offering unique, Western storytelling experiences. But I guess companies don't really care much for innovation when you can just keep rehashing the same ideas for a decent profit.

    • @archlectoryarvi2873
      @archlectoryarvi2873 3 года назад +3

      @@martyr_lightsilver1833 at the end of the day, it all comes down to profit. Live action movies and TV shows earn a lot more than animated ones even if it makes for a shittier adaptation. And animation is still looked down upon by many as a lesser medium.

    And seeing an underrepresented folklore is amazing. Things like pagan house spirits, tiny elves, water spirits, Draugen, even the trolls are folklore accurate as they turn to stone at sunlight.

    I sort of blame Netflix for the upcoming market saturation, you mentioned the Witcher and Cursed, but they also had A letter for the king, and all 3 to me were different levels of mediocre, and the only one I liked was the Witcher because it did have some uniqueness to it, while the other 2 felt completely generic...and what the fantasy genre doesn't need right now is generic shows, Netflix had 3 all in one year! Netflix's approach of just producing so many mediocre shows will probably end up saturating many genres, and I would not forgive them if the sunk Fantasy!

    It isn't necessary to read Witcher books to understand three different timelines, but it requires paying close attention, which I think should not be necessary. It might not be particularly helpful anyway, since first few books (which first season of show adapts) are arguably worse with that, since they are collections of stories told out of order.

      Yeah, I will give the Witcher show props for telling the story the way it did. I felt by the end it all flowed together. I think fantasy book adaptations don't work because of the very niche aspect of the fantasy genre to the general public. Everybody knows LOTR because it's almost a pioneer. Most English-speaking countries know about Discworld, but they just know about it. They don't read them. And then Wheel of Time... Err. Well, it certainly is famous among the fantasy community, but honestly...
    GoT is a special case, the controversial nature of the show is what made its success. It's also pretty easy to understand and follow, unlike many fantasy books were the lore is mandatory for the story. It's the case for GoT, but the story IS the lore.
    I think other unsuccessful shows lack of recognition could be explained by how bland, cookie-cutter, Hollywood Quota-checking they were. It wasn't genuine, it was just a Yes man's checklist. The Witcher was booed. I don't need to give much of the reasons why, I would be banned on RUclips.
    Fantasy is just... Hard to make in cinema. Maybe smaller movies with smaller fantasy elements could work, but filming armies and dragons and whatnot requires tons and tons of money. And not a whole lot of directors are willing to go through what Peter Jackson had to go through to make LOTR (and not be fucked over by Weinstein and political softies). And they're willing to the risk of making a movie that doesn't work.

    "the LOTR TV show is trying to be all dark and edgy, which LOTR really wasn't."
    You've never read _The Silmarillion_ before, have you?
    It's about the First Age of Middle-Earth, and the rise and fall of the Elven Kingdoms of Beleriand in particular, and it gets _spectacularly_ dark. The Dark Lord Morgoth, to whom Sauron was but a lieutenant, tried to destroy Middle-Earth and _almost succeeded_ before being overthrown in the War of Wrath. The sons of Feanor lead the Elves on a reckless and ultimately suicidal crusade of vengeance against Morgoth simply to recover their father's jewellery. One prominent human hero commits _explicit incest with his amnesiac sister_ before committing suicide. And there are quite graphic depictions of forced marriage, torture (one character is _nailed to a cliff by his wrist_ ), and mutilation. The epilogue explains that Elendil and Isildur were in Middle-Earth in the first place because Sauron had seduced the people of the island of Numenor into literally worshipping Morgoth and invading the Undying lands to claim immortality, which meant Eru (the God figure of Middle-Earth) had to sink the island and _turn the world into a sphere_ to stop the attack.

      They did do a anime adaption of Ronja, the Robber's Daughter, anzoku no Musume Rōnya (A swedish medieval fantasy) It feel totaly bizarre to see Scandinavian landskape (the forest and waterfall is important plot point) but the robbers eat rice and dress in japanes? clothes and some viking insperied clothes. How do you have rice plantation in a snowy spruce forest.

    hi james, this is irrelevant to the video, i'm just curious: what does your arm say?
    but yeah i agree with you. once media execs see something working they all seem to just latch onto it like leeches or something

    I found 'Cursed' hilarious. It's an... interesting show. Not good, not even remotely, but it's impossible to watch it without wondering at the creative process behind it.

    I agree, the Witcher show is fine/mediocre on its own merits. Having read the books, I'll say that as an adaptation it is really bad...

    Dude youre spot on about the witcher. I think the first season was too ambitious, too big for its britches. It was a good try for sure but they need to give this second season more time to untangle the strings of their plots and timelines.
