She is a quiet student who does not move nor expresses verbally what she is reading. I consider this to be a superior yet passive form of study.
Unfortunately, I belong to a lesser group which involves an active form of studying where I need to express verbally what I am reading.
I need to move my hands around and speak out as if I am lecturing a bunch of students. I've seen others express a similar behavior.
She probably does this already; she must be doing just readings/practice questions and the quiet setting allowed her to make this video in the first place. I'm guessing if all she did was study quietly then we would have way more of these types of videos haha
also I feel like the most consistently successful students partake in the active form of studying that you described. The type of studying that you do is more beneficial in that it allows students to absorb the information faster and retain it longer (in other words, you learn more by actually studying less). Far too many of us spend hours in the library hunched over our textbooks reading, making notes, re-reading, with the goal of trying to get as much information into our brains as possible, and we don't spend enough time challenging ourselves and trying to get the information OUT of our brains. In a way, if she is quietly doing practice exam questions then she is also actively studying. Jamie seems to be really disciplined and great at time management, so I would assume that she studies "actively" more than anything. It's also probably necessary that she does this considering she is a med student lol
Sometimes I study in a similar fashion. It helps me remember certain things and facilitates the learning process. I try to study without expressing myself verbally too though so that i don't get too comfortable with only one form of studying. The former type of studying isn't exactly perfectly suitable in a public space like school after all :p Anyhow, i think being able to describe something and phrase it in words is an important skill so i wouldn't necessarily say that it is an inferior form of studying. Depends on how you see it.
Then you are a verbal learner like me, I retain information like x10 times faster if I hear someone say something or if I read information out loud.
Samiha Mir I wonder if she actually is the expressive/verbal type. I agree with your post. Myself I could never study in that form for various reasons.
First I would retain very little of the information. Maybe in the beginning the retention rate would be higher but in a couple of hours I'd be retaining practically nothing.
This is why I fear the passive form of study. I'd be fooling myself into believing I am learning the material whilst I'm not.
Secondly I think I would get quite lonely and depressed from such a cubicle oriented form of study. Even Str to Fit has expressed this concern and it's her principal form of study. Imagine us.
The expressive-active form does not suffer from loneliness because it functions as if it were an ancient Greek theatrical production.
I had a Greek professor tell me that those of us who are of this type are BODY people. I'd never heard that before but it is an accurate description.
We learn best when we move our body in accord with the information we are reading. I can not do the quiet cubicle college library form of study.
I've done it but it's torture. The expressive-active form makes learning fun. If I could find a group just like me I could do this all day long for the rest of my life.
Anika Hossain I agree a million percent. In a study group of like minded folks who are as serious as us the results would be astronomical in terms of output. It would also be so much fun .
Each participant of the study group would take turns as the teacher and the rest posing as active students questioning the teacher to further solidify concepts from every conceivable angle.
To me this is more fun than going to the mall or going hiking or watching a movie. This is knowledge and the growing of our minds as we learn this. WHAT COULD BE BETTER and MORE FUN. RIGHT?
We need to find folks like ourselves to come together and study. If you read my response to Mir I expand on our types. I'm thinking that via Skype or some other media such an activity is possible.
Of course it would have to be students in the same year and same courses. Given that I seriously doubt the Strive to Fit is like us. It would be interesting to see her response as to if she is ever of our type. It's nice to read your comment. We are the same.
I've used this 4 or 5 times already in the past two weeks. Didn't think these types of videos would actually work for me but it's helping me stay incredibly focused, who am I lol. You're so inspiring, you're going to make an amazing doctor!

It's so hard to memorize the upper and lower extremities and understand surgical case studies at this wee hour of dawn, but the exams will be at 7 am tomorrow. I would like to thank you for this video. I am a student working to study for my Commercial Multi Engine Pilot's exam coming up in just 4 days. I tried to just buckle down, listening to music and it did not do me any good. My mind was just wandering.
