Imagine being one of the survivors of that?
I live right beside where the UK stores the weapons for our fleet of submarines that are "our deterrent" against others with the same weapons.
Everyone around here knows that we would be a target of a first strike and it freaks a few people out a little bit. A lot of folk don't like it, but I would much rather be right beneath a nuclear bomb should it be targeted. Most folk don't like that idea, but if it got to the point of nuclear war then fuck surviving that. You wouldn't be able to get any medicine for starters, the water would be undrinkable, all the food that you could eat would go very fast. Not to mention that you would likely be walking around with your skin hanging off or at best have SEVERE radiation sickness and no doubt have cancer as well.
I would much prefer to be one of those scorch marks on the pavement that you see from the aftermath of those two bombs that hit Japan. Get it over quickly.
I was just watching a video that showed declassified files from tge cold War, one of them was about from when the USA had a permanent base in my home town and they also had a dry dock for repairs for subs. When one of the American Subs got brought in for repair it was shadowed by a Russian sub. The Russian sub sat itself on the sea bed waiting for the work to be done then tried to hide beneath the US sub when it was leaving the dry Dock. The captain of the US sub thought it would be prudent to take a quick dive while they were still in shallow water and landed square bang in top of the Russian sub. Both nuclear submarines to which it was covered up by both the UK & US governments mostly due to the embarrassment of how a Soviet Sub could get that close to the USA's cold War era semi-perminent dry dock and our (UK) supposed most guarded naval/nuclear base in the whole of the UK, hence why that was the place the USA had chosen as it's closest to the US mainland port they had across the pond (the Atlantic ocean for those who don't know).
That's not the first time I've heard of these type of stories. Which makes you wonder about how many we haven't been told about which brings us back to Openhimier's words about how we as a species don't have the intelligence to be able to handle these weapons.
We have been closer on more occasions than what the situation has called for of wiping each other out by accident with nuclear weapons than the likes of what happened in Japan and the Cuban missle crisis.
It makes it feel like it is only a matter of when rather than will we wipe out our civilisation and more likely to do it by accident.

Thx for the video. The name is misleading.
Example: In the early 70s, in one of the worst public school systems in the US my science teacher covered the splitting of the atom & following chain reaction. I asked how did US government & our scientists know this reaction would end before splitting all of earth's atoms. This cat got visibly nervous before finally admitting to us young uns that they did not know but went ahead & did it anyhow. If my underpaid 5th grade science teacher knew this you can be certain that all educated in science did as well. No secrets here my friend. 😉

The alternative was a land invasion of Japan. They made half a million purple hearts for it and they thought that wasn't going to be enough. Estimated deaths was in the millions.
Plus remember, the groundwork for the atomic bomb was done by Britain, Germany was also close to it but used the wrong type of water. Not to mention that Russia was also working on it.
Of all the bad things that happened, the first getting dropped on Japan was probably the best outcome.
And I use the word "best" in the loosest sense of the word.
