  • I never thought I'd say this - but the four-cylinder LandCruiser 70 Series is better than the V8. Paul Maric tests out the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series GXL with the new four-cylinder diesel engine to see if it stacks up to what the V8 was known for.

      Spot on. Toyota is supposed to be affordable and reliable without drawing too much attention to itself. It's why it was so popular in Australia.
      They are price gouging on these things because every bloke in the city wants one to just put black rims and black number plates then thrash them in the suburbs.

    @johannesschaller5510 6 месяцев назад +10

    Great first look at what will probably be a strong seller. Main improvement as I see it is the auto trans, which probably also largely explains the better performance. Can't imagine trying to get a decent 0-100 time in a manual 70 series. Steering "rack" is mentioned a few times here but it's most likely a steering box, to suit the live front axle.
    Toyota should be ashamed of those exterior mirrors, and embarrassed not to have narrowed the front axle or widened the rear. It can't possibly be a significant cost, as the engineering and design has all been done.

      Yes, it is a "raised air intake" to reduce dust which is why it has a dust spinner on the top. Toyota used to simply call it a dust snorkel. With a 700mm wading depth, it was never designed to be a water snorkel and you'd be mad to drive in water over the bonnet with all that electronics.

    I had an older one of these as a work truck in the mining industry. Absolutely agricultural. I don't see the appeal, unless you live on a farm or need it for terrible tracks somewhere in the Far North. Toyota is laughing all the way to the bank when they sell each one of these at those prices. A Hilux can do most of what these can and will be much more enjoyable to live with, day to day. Funny enough, my supervisor had a Hilux at work and used to laugh at us driving these things around. They were seen as punishment and for the junior blokes. All they had for options was a bull bar, extra lights and a winch. The seats were torture devices, everything rattled, you had to keep manually adjusting the mirrors,even when they were as tight as you could get them, on rough roads they just would shift all over the place and end up pointing down after a few minutes. It had an anemic V8, sounded OK, but just hated to rev. It always felt like it would roll over in corners and in sand it was terrible. It would snake all over and the shifts were so slow it would almost stop when you changed gear. The auto would probably be a lot better on sandy tracks. I just don't get why anyone would buy one of these for a daily driver. I get people who own old classic Jeeps etc for nostalgia, but I really don't understand why someone would pay this sort of money, and then another $50k to make it livable. I could easily afford one, and I like offroading, but I'd get quickly fed up with this thing after a while.
