Bought the TX NR-6050 from costco on sale for $399, honestly a stupid value for a receiver which actually has 40 gbps 8k60/4k120 ports (looking at you Yamaha (and I think Marantz/Denon as well)). I'm a simple 2..1 man but went AVR to be able to use my speakers with my TV, Apple TV, and Series X, + the phono input for my turntable. This thing is seriously a ridiculous value. Also the ability to bi-amp using this amp is super cool being able to try it out without needing to buy anything beyond a couple more speaker cables.
My 7100 is being delivered tomorrow…I needed the 2 extra channels and the built in Dirac seems promising. I’ll be running a 7.1.2 system with the JBL Studio 2 series speakers. 290 fronts (Bi-Amped), 235C center, 220 surrounds, 235 rears, 550 powered sub.
Just ordered the 6100. Just gonna run it as 2.2 channel system. I like the 100 watts to make sure the 2 speakers get plenty of sound to fill up the 12x24 ft room.
Beautiful AV Receivers, all of them. I like how even the 5100 has Net / Internet Streaming available, as well as Bluetooth. Basically they are modernized 4K / 8K versions of what I have- a TX-NR616 7.2 Chnnl AV Receiver. // The 5100 / 6100 / 7100 are at great price-points for what you get.
I agree. I have the TX-NR686 and the 7100 is just an 8k version of it. Went from a TX-SR676 THX to the NR686 just for 4k and Atmos. TrueHD on both, but the NR686 seems a little more crisp.

Gentlemen, as I was told by Mr. Lee Young, a contemporary of James B. Lansing while interning when I was a new minted millenial: Calm down, you'll get there. :) And be thankful to God, you don't have to choose between a reference audio systems and a wife/home/car, etc. I was lucky and got in on the royalty wagons of the analog era and could have it all. And I went INTO the "business". Onkyo was/is a mid brand, I was a Carver, D'Angelo, SCS, Hafler, Adcom, JBL kinda guy. Class A, of course. Just my 16core, RTX Quadro PC can do 8k uhd at 144hz on a 32" freesync monitor. Pro gear on the workstation, and the B&O out front. For home gear I like NAD, Accupahse too. Last thing, I actually have two pieces of Onkyo gear myself. The old TX-SR304 receiver and the TA-RW111 cassette deck. I'm selling the receiver for only $25.00 to a lucky person at a yard sale, making someone new to this game plenty happy. I'm keeping the cassette deck, it STILL smells new! :)
Costco sells the tx-nr6100 as the tx-nr 6050 for $499. The only real difference is 10 watts less two channels driven @ 90 watts instead of the 6100's 100 Watts
It is not only about 8K devices. 4k 120Hz VRR will only work on 8K input. So if you have Xbox X and PS5 and decent PC, you need 3 8K HDMI inputs already.
How are they now on build quality/service ?!? When I found out (the hard way, back in 1999) Onkyo wasn't supplying needed parts to their authorized repair shops, i walked away from their products...and into the arms of Yamaha.
Is Onkyo a reliable and a long term investment now? For quite some time, they were the red-headed step child of the AV world...prone to many problems with no solution. Yamaha and Denon were the go-to systems for a while. Lightning strikes are less of a problem when you have EVERYTHING connected to 1 or more quality UPS/battery backups.
Make sure you have adequate cooling as my TX-NR757 is burning up in my equipment cabinet so I have a burnt component smell that I can't use it and will replace.
The 6100 hooked up to my PC is giving me a pain in the ass. My previous Denon did not go blank when switching from youtube video to video. Earc and CEC is not working right either. I'm holding onto it for a while because I spent the money, but I'm going back to Denon after this unit.
Why on the box of the tx-nr6100 it says running 210w per Channel at 6 ohms compare to 100w at 8 ohms? Sorry maybe choosing it for my Klipsch rf 82 150w should I go for yamaha rx-a2050 at Higher Price😢?I wanna fully experience my Klipsch set
I had the 6100. HDMI CEC didn't work if the unit was powered off for longer than two minutes. Return it and got another...then returned that one. It's a shame, it sounded so good.
Back in the late 60's-early 70's Popular Electronics Published a two part article on a Solid State Crossover Network that had its own Built-In Power Supply. The crossover was engineered to drive the Bass,Midrange and Tweeters individually of each other. The article included a P.C. Board Print and the parts list for each frequency of the Speakers. The following month, it showed the specs for building a Speaker Enclosure for the Cross-over Boards to fit it and how to make the Enclosures Corner-Less. I have been searching for these two P.E. Articles for years?? Does anyone have any/remember any of the information on this project. This Cross-over System is nothing like what the cross-overs of today!?
Ok, so we have the electronics specs... But what about the sound quality? I mean we can mince decimals and numbers... But what is the difference in actual music and theater sound quality between the RX 50 and the NR7100?? Is one acoustically/to the ear better or is it all about the bells and whistles, This's and that's??
What is the best choice of av receivers for listening the music in stereo, and do they have a loudness or something else that is replacement for loudness?
Would have loved to see you crack open these Onkyo units and the Pioneer ones in part 3 to compare them to your part 1 of the series and the Yamahas! Nonetheless, thanks for breaking down the latest and greatest 👍🏼
I had that Addcom 3 Channel Surround Amp. It was great to pair with the GFA555 (which I still have). The sound tracking on that was phenomenal for the time (early 90's). I remember watching Speed and there was a scene where the vehicles went under a bridge. The sound started out in front of me (really behind the front speakers, then it went under me as the vehicles passed under the bridge, then back out level with me behind me. Too bad it died about 3 years into ownership.
I think this was the first time I saw that exact model. The Adcoms always work and sound great but do have issues from time to time. But typically fixable!
So I bought the Onkyo NR6050 (NR6100 w/o thx certification) and it sounds a little "hollow" until you turn the volume up to "65" I am not sure why this is? My TXSR608 (12 yrs old) always sounded full. Both were SPL leveled and room corrected with their AccuEQ. I have also purchased the NR7100 because with the Dirac I thought it would sound better? If it does I will be returning the 6050. If it turns out my speakers are the cause than that will be a whole new can of warms.....
Question for your upcoming Q & A Video. What is the difference between turntables since all turntables go round & round and have a stylus. Some of the turntables are $2K and WHY are they so costly?? Thanks for your time !!
good TTs need a steady 4 pole motor,, 3 pole motor that adds a whoosh and rumble to the speaker sound,,annoying,,,the 4 poleis are more quiet,,,,,the platter,,should be all metal, somewhat weighty for even and accurate speed, ought also to have a rubber mat,,,,a tone arm that adjusts the weight in grams and fractions,it should balance,,float when the cartridge plus the shell are joined,,adjusting the tracking weight dial at the tone arms' rear,,the cartridge should be of the magnetic variety,,they deliver high quality FM like signals from the record grooves,, a pre amp is a signal booster, necessary for the tiny bit of electromagnetic current to sound plump and loud, ceramic cartridges by comparison, deliver tinny, flat sound into the amplifier, their greater weight wears high frequency waves in the records it plays, small pieces of the vinyl are quickly worn off because of the greater weight of ceramic cartridges,,4 grams and more,,,,,vs the mag cartridge whose weight in the groove path is a gram and a half often less,= longer playing life for the records,,which you also need to keep clean, a cover for the player also keeps room dust from falling on the records,,,,a lot of this older equipment was a lot cheaper 30 years ago,,vintage items such as my set up, 70s receiver cost 30 bucks from a resale shop,I did have to spend another 50 bucks for repairs, the identical reciever several are up on ebay, go for 6 to 700 bucks,,,,,,your other choice keep meandering through thrift and resale shops learn to recognize good equipment it does take patience and learning what to look for, carry a sound device w an 18 in stereo plug w 2 rca phono plugs on the end,,so you can test equipment out in the field
@@LennyFlorentine Yes, but that gets me to C$1800 instead of C$1350, just to use less power from a receiver. What is frustrating is that the Asia and Europe version of the 7100 have front left and right pre-outs.
I bought an Onkyo system and while the sound was fantastic, it spent more time being repaired than in my house. I’ll never buy a Onkyo product ever again.
My HT-R990 took a dump .. no sound guy at shop can not fix says there are no DTS chips to find >.?? So i guess i junk it and look for a nice up grade ... Might just look at other makers on receivers?? wish me luck..
I have the 6100 hooked up to my PC is giving me a pain in the ass. My previous Denon did not go blank when switching from youtube video to video. I get clicking when transitioning. Earc and CEC is not working right either. I have great cables but have switched them out. I'm holding onto it for a while because I spent the money, but I'm going back to Denon after this unit.
Hi from France ! Do you have some informations concerning Onkyo and their new line-up, if there will coming to Europe soon ? Or not at all ? Can't wait to have a TX-RZ50.
I have three pioneer pieces that I bought in 1978 while in the USAF. Wondering if you may be interested in purchasing them ? CT-F1000 Cassette , PL-630 Turntable and TX-7800 Tuner. Let me know, thanks
Thank you for a very awesome video, question, can I run a wide range of speakers off the 6100? For six or eight ohm speakers? Keep up the great work I love your channel.
But, I don't need 9 channels. Maybe I just want the pre-out section expanded. I think we should be able to customize our choices straight from the company..
can anyone confirm if the NR7100 displays the volume bar/volume overlay at 4K60? current AVR only shows at 4K30 and AVR is in cabinet so need volume feedback on screen
I bought this Onkyo TX-NR787 (I think it looks like your 7100) 2 years ago and like I have posted elsewhere, it don't do ZIP. It has the same issue as yours displayed. SET UP TV. What makes anybody think there is even a TV involved. Suppose you just want it for a sound system to play your CDs? Cannot get this thing to do anything. Hooked up a speaker, managed to turn it to Tuner, a station came up that I'm familiar with. And nothing, no sound. So there is not much hope if I hook up my old CD Player. I spent a lot of money buying this at Best Buy. It's just junk, I'm currently looking for some vintage electronics that I know will turn on and work. Even my old Sony unit, that I was replacing because there is more room on this Onkyo for speakers, is at least reliable. I haven't had music in the house for over two years. I had disconnected my working Sony and stored it away. I was trusting that this Onkyo would make things better. I was wrong. It turned me into a poorer, frustrated, angry guy.
Sorry to hear about that. These are meant for use with tv, I would recommend a 2 channel receiver for 2 channel music. The employee at best buy should have never sold you an avr for 2 channel music. Check out ShopJustAudio.com theres lots of vintage gear that will get you fixed right up. Then, when you stop buying audio from best buy, and get it from us, you can be happy... not angry
People will be laughing about the notion of the vast majority of people even having one true 8K device (especially with the corresponding full hardware setup!) for MANY years to come. As for gaming, add quite a bit more years to that.
Hi there, just confuse to choose between Onkyo Tx Nr7100 or Marantz Sr6015. Fyi, I own Onkyo Tx Nr676 for now, but since it had problem with the HDMI board (according by Onkyo technician), and the part isn't available anymore, so I have to replace it with either one I mentioned. And I afraid if I choose Onkyo , is that possible the same problem will occur again with the tx Nr7100? I see on Onkyo official web, they stated that it has been refined for chassis, HDMI board, DAC, Digital/Analog inputs, power-amp grounds and power lines. I use the Tx Nr 676 only last for approx 2 years and HDMI board got problem. I really like Onkyo especially from how it sounds, really great. But I've traumatic because of the HDMI board issue. From people who I asked, they say Marantz is very close to Onkyo for the quality of sound, and I search the equivalent is Sr6015 with similar specs, except Marantz has Pre-Out but the Wifi still using Wifi 4 (a/b/g/n), and Onkyo has not pre-out, but it has THX certified and already Wifi 5 (a/b/g/n/ac). Both of them I-MAX enhanced. Thanks for your advice...
@@LennyFlorentine I'm wondering what brand and type of DAC in these ONKYO receivers ? I search in their official website, still can't find the details. It stated the DAC is 192 KHz / 24-bit only, no other details. My former ONKYO tx nr 676 has AKM AK4458 384 kHz / 32-bit DAC. Is tx nr7100 DAC downgraded from nr676 in case of that?
Hi, I currently use the Denon AVR-X550BT with a 5.2 Klipsch surround sound. I have 1 12 inch subwoofer though. I want to keep increasing my sound system because I'm a maniac. What receiver do you think I should buy? I want at least 210W per channel.
I get weary of Onkyo after having two units only last a few years before the HDMI boards went out. Onkyo did warranty the first unit. What is a person to do? Shops say that they may or may not be able to get boards now with Onkyo Japan not playing nice with Onkyo USA. Is there anything true about that? I really liked my nr777 and it looks new.....just no HDMI anymore..... :(
I just got a TXNR7100,having problems getting rid of ARC,its connected to a projector,i disabled ARC but if i shut off the projector, the audio disapears as well, cannot set it up to listen to music only.I tried the second video output (Without ARC) set up video HDMI output to mai+sub =no output,to sub only= no output,At one point it worked (on main only) projector shut-off then after 10 minutes, the sound shut off,Think its defective,What do you think ?
Thanks for your helpul video introduction! I have a question reg. 7100; can I use the LINE OUT for a analog Vintage tapedeck (e.g. Sony TC-K 909 ES ) to record e.g. Music from TuneIn, Phono analog turntable , etc. playing over the 7100 ?
The HDMI board issue was plaguing everybody. Apparently they were all sourcing their HDMI boards from the same factory. The majority of those issues have been panned out since they released the new boards once HDMI 2.2 and 2.3 became mainstream. It's a fairly safe bet anything that's 2021 and newer have the updated boards.
Hi Just Audio. couled you PLEASE HELP me ? I've just bought TX-NR6100 and have annoying problem with passthrough. Is it possible to setup it well or I have to back my Onkyo to the store ? Problem - passthrough works randomly. When I turn on SAT BOX or Chromecast I would like TV to turn on only and use TV speakers till I do not turn on NR6100. In practice sometimes it works but usually receiver turns on itself and automatically external speakers are used. I HDMI options I have only OFF / Auto / Auto (Eco). No any other option to manually force particular source for passthrough. Any solution ?
I have the TX-NR 7100 and I have to power cycle or hard reset via Cable/Sat power button. The OSD will not open and it stays on “please wait” also the Onkyo controller app stops connecting. It’s extremely frustrating as this is how I change modes. Has anyone else had this issue and found resolution?
I just received my nr7100 today. I have dual SVS SB16 ultras. How is the calibration for dual subs? I’ve read they set it up as one and not separate subs.
Thanks for the quick shipping on my 7100. Now I just need time to set it up 😉 (after the holidays)

good TTs need a steady 4 pole motor,, 3 pole motor that adds a whoosh and rumble to the speaker sound,,annoying,,,the 4 poleis are more quiet,,,,,the platter,,should be all metal, somewhat weighty for even and accurate speed, ought also to have a rubber mat,,,,a tone arm that adjusts the weight in grams and fractions,it should balance,,float when the cartridge plus the shell are joined,,adjusting the tracking weight dial at the tone arms' rear,,the cartridge should be of the magnetic variety,,they deliver high quality FM like signals from the record grooves,, a pre amp is a signal booster, necessary for the tiny bit of electromagnetic current to sound plump and loud, ceramic cartridges by comparison, deliver tinny, flat sound into the amplifier, their greater weight wears high frequency waves in the records it plays, small pieces of the vinyl are quickly worn off because of the greater weight of ceramic cartridges,,4 grams and more,,,,,vs the mag cartridge whose weight in the groove path is a gram and a half often less,= longer playing life for the records,,which you also need to keep clean,
a cover for the player also keeps room dust from falling on the records,,,,a lot of this older equipment was a lot cheaper 30 years ago,,vintage items such as my set up, 70s receiver cost 30 bucks from a resale shop,I did have to spend another 50 bucks for repairs, the identical reciever several are up on ebay, go for 6 to 700 bucks,,,,,,your other choice keep meandering through thrift and resale shops learn to recognize good equipment it does take patience and learning what to look for, carry a sound device w an 18 in stereo plug w 2 rca phono plugs on the end,,so you can test equipment out in the field
7100 gets you Dirac Live!!! 😍
But still no pre-outs! 😟
Pioneer VSX-LX505 or Integra's for the preouts..
@@LennyFlorentine
Yes, but that gets me to C$1800 instead of C$1350, just to use less power from a receiver.
What is frustrating is that the Asia and Europe version of the 7100 have front left and right pre-outs.
@@LennyFlorentine
Pre-outs used to be common 10 years ago. Now they are only on high end receivers.
I bought an Onkyo system and while the sound was fantastic, it spent more time being repaired than in my house. I’ll never buy a Onkyo product ever again.
Did onkyo ever fix there HDMI problems
My HT-R990 took a dump .. no sound guy at shop can not fix says there are no DTS chips to find >.?? So i guess i junk it and look for a nice up grade ... Might just look at other makers on receivers?? wish me luck..
Any brand can take a dump, but yeah look for a replacement
So, the 7100 is 100W per channel (9channels) but would that wattage increase for someone with a 5.1 setup? Thank you, and great videos!!
you have a repair shop?
This was good information, made me decide on the 7100.... which is out of stock😣, any idea when you'll have that available again?
I thought they were getting out of the game. I'm still rocking a 2007 Pioneer Elite that I really want to upgrade.
The TX-NR7100 has Dirac Live and supports IMAX enhanced over the other two.
Is the IMAX enhance even worth it?
I'm wondering good speakers that aren't as expensive as klipsch? For the 6100
There’s some good examples in this video
ruclips.net/video/nH2JFqW9If4/видео.html
How is the power stage on these with 5 speakers running?
Hi from France ! Do you have some informations concerning Onkyo and their new line-up, if there will coming to Europe soon ? Or not at all ? Can't wait to have a TX-RZ50.
Onkyo Support said that it will be released 2.Q 2022
Man I had a dedicated home theater room a few years back and the wife and I never used it haha.
I’m just 2.1 these days:)
Love the 2.1!
If Im only running 5 channels on the 6100, is it still the same watt output???
I have three pioneer pieces that I bought in 1978 while in the USAF. Wondering if you may be interested in purchasing them ? CT-F1000 Cassette , PL-630 Turntable and TX-7800 Tuner. Let me know, thanks
Hdmi 2.1?
Is there a max length on the calibration cable going back to the AVR?
Just checking in….its a couple years later and we still do not have 8k devices.😂
Is it possible to do 2.1.2 Atmos setup with TX-NR7100?
Thank you for a very awesome video, question, can I run a wide range of speakers off the 6100? For six or eight ohm speakers? Keep up the great work I love your channel.
Yeah but I would keep them the same. Sometimes its not great to mix them
@@LennyFlorentine sorry for the miss understanding. Can I run speakers as low as 4omes
can you tell me if onkyo 7100 is quiet or have some humming from transformator or vents is lound or not when listen in lower volume?
But, I don't need 9 channels. Maybe I just want the pre-out section expanded. I think we should be able to customize our choices straight from the company..
can anyone confirm if the NR7100 displays the volume bar/volume overlay at 4K60? current AVR only shows at 4K30 and AVR is in cabinet so need volume feedback on screen
My 8k enhanced isnt working to get 4k 120hz on my Xbox. Any idea what I’m doing wrong??
What happened to ONKYO’S INTEGRA line?
Going to answer this one in our upcoming Q&A video :)
Hey - I just bought a Onkyo TX-303PRO and was wondering how good it is - ? I'd appreciate your thoughts! Thanks
Missed a couple letters: TX-SV303PRO Reciever/Amplifier. Thanks
Then, when you stop buying audio from best buy, and get it from us, you can be happy... not angry
I had an Onkyo stereo in my car in 1980. I out rocked all the cars in school 😀

I've been looking at the Onkyo TX-NR696, any thoughts?
That problem can and does happen with all of those brands, so if you like Onkyo go Onkyo.
Just having trouble deciding if the nr6100 would be the best choice instead of Denon s970h. Any comments to help me decide¿
Jammin my Onkyo TX-NR809 today. Wondering if i should use the bi amping option? 135 watts, will it make a difference? Polk Monitor 70 II.
Hi, I currently use the Denon AVR-X550BT with a 5.2 Klipsch surround sound. I have 1 12 inch subwoofer though. I want to keep increasing my sound system because I'm a maniac. What receiver do you think I should buy? I want at least 210W per channel.
Nicely Done.
Lookin at the 6100 and haven't heard anyone talk about the chips used for the amp/dacs or it's sound signature?
Thanks in advance :)
Do you ever come across mid 70s H.k amps I really luv there build quality & sound?
Have one coming soon!
Totally different company. No issues, they really cleaned up their act in the past few years. They have a large repair center that they use in the US.
@@LennyFlorentine Which repair center is that? My local shop used to be an Onkyo authorized repair center until Onkyo canceled them.
@@LennyFlorentine Do these 3 models have a FAN added to help the HDMI from failing?

I just got a TXNR7100,having problems getting rid of ARC,its connected to a projector,i disabled ARC but if i shut off the projector, the audio disapears as well, cannot set it up to listen to music only.I tried the second video output (Without ARC) set up video HDMI output to mai+sub =no output,to sub only= no output,At one point it worked (on main only) projector shut-off then after 10 minutes, the sound shut off,Think its defective,What do you think ?
Projectors and AV Receivers sometimes have handshake issues. Historically Onkyo's more than others. I would recommend trying the Pioneer LX305.
Great videos. what do you think, Onkyo TX-NR7100 vs Pioneer Elite VSX-LX305?
Gonna find out cause I just brought home a 7100 to pair with my Lintons
I chose the 7100 over the LX305 cause it was open already. It's pretty much the same thing
Both get you Dirac Live
Mighty fine beard buddy.
Thank you!
How about 7100 vs RZ50?
Im looking for amp for CINEMA and STEREO - 50/50.
Which one is better solution to be paired with Oberon9?
RZ50 is better thah the 7100

) to record e.g. Music from TuneIn, Phono analog turntable , etc. playing over the 7100 ?
Sure can! ShopJustAudio.com
Are Onkyo receivers still having HDMI issues?? Outstanding informative video thank you man.

@@jameswheeler7679 😳 Geeze that's sucks man. I'm really sorry to hear that. Theft is one of my biggest pet peeves.
You got it right, they all source from the same place. Onkyo fortunately looks to have all the updated ones as they all run 4k 120 when tested.

Ht-s5910 or tx-nr6100?? Which should I buy
Get the NR version, be it the 51, 61, or 71 over an HTS version
@Just Audio I'm thinking about the nr6100, power enough to fill my room!! Thanks for the advice
Can an external amp be added to tx-nr7100? And if so what amp would you suggest?
I'd exchange it if you are having trouble.
Hola, que AV RECEIVER me recomiendan, tengo unos parlantes Polk TSI 100. Saludos desde Argentina.-
I have the TX-NR 7100 and I have to power cycle or hard reset via Cable/Sat power button.
Haven't tried it, let us know how it goes
