    You are way too critical of this vehicle. I am sure if you owned one of these and drove it you would have a different opinion. I have owned one for 2 years and it did take a bit of getting used to but it has been a pleasure to drive and very intuitive. You never mentioned the safety features, adaptive steering, adaptive cruise control, and vehicle hold button. These are my favourite features you failed to mention. I live in Canada (cold) it and if you use heated seats or steering wheel the engine stays off in EV, however if you turn on cabin heat the engine starts and runs at idle to supply heat not taking away from your EV range. Contrary to your statement this vehicle is very smooth and I like the shifting, no CVT for me thanks. The only time I can feel the engine stat is when it is not moving. You also forgot to mention that on the infotainment system you have steering wheel controls, no need to use touch controls and loose concentration from driving. I feel for a 30 min. review you failed on this vehicle stating your many dislikes of the design, I personally like it as many do. Also as a previous reviewer stated I bought this in Canada for approximately $10,000 to $14000 less than a RAV 4 PHEV. Possibly the best car I’ve owned for tech, comfort, and overall quality.

    I enjoyed your channel because I used to drive a RAV4 and found your views fair. But now I drive a 2022 Hyundai Tucson PHEV and I find your review in this video to be unreasonably harsh. I have had this Tucson for about a year; I enjoy the design, I enjoy the interior, I enjoy the 52km EV range, I enjoy the fuel efficiency beyond the EV range, and I enjoy the smooth rides. Yes, there are things I don't like about this car but not as bad as you described here.

    I had one of these! I owned a 2022 Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid Limited for approximately 5 months, I flew out to New Jersey and drove it back home to Oklahoma since Hyundai only sold these models in certain states at the time of purchase in July 2022 and New Jersey was the only place I found one. This vehicle was replacing my 2022 Tucson Hybrid Limited.... I loved my Tucson Hybrid so much I wanted the Plug-In version. Well it turned out to be a nightmare.... The vehicle would randomly stop accelerating in EV mode. The battery would have a sufficient charge, the gasoline engine would start maxing out RPMs but the vehicle would not accelerate. This happened multiple times without warning. No error lights or warning messages were displayed. The Tucson could be restarted and the issue would repeat itself. I took the Tucson PHEV to the dealer 8 times and the dealer was able to replicate the issue but were not aware of why the vehicle was behaving this way. The dealer reached out to a regional tech who could still not diagnose the issue. Hyundai Corporate stated the vehicle was operating as intended and directed the dealer to give the vehicle back to me. The service manager refused to give the vehicle back to me as it was a safety/reliability concern as he was unable to get the vehicle out of his parking lot under its own power. After much back and forth and ultimately hiring an attorney, Hyundai was forced to buy the vehicle back from me. I later searched the VIN online and saw the vehicle for sale as a Lemon/Buyback car at an Arkansas Hyundai dealer, I wonder what they did to get it back on the road and really hope the vehicle does not compromise the safety of the new owner. I really liked my Tucson, unfortunately I cannot recommend the 2022 Tucson or the Hyundai brand at this point. This was my 5th brand new Hyundai, first one I had major issues with, but the manufacturer proved themselves unwilling to stand behind their product. The long warranties on these vehicles mean nothing if the manufacturer doesn't stand behind it.

      How much value did you lose on the 2022 Hybrid trading it in? I have a 2023 Tucson PHEV and it appears it has already lost about 25% of its value as a trade since purchased 5 months ago. My last hybrid (2021 Highlander Hybrid Platinum) appreciated 10% over 2 years- obviously pandemic related. Yes, I sold it to a dealership for more than what I paid new. Tucson has been 100% reliable over 5 months save a phantom check engine light that I think may be related to the gas cap. Nothing concerning in the least other than somewhat lackluster fuel economy in colder temps around town. In moderate temps of like 40 degrees, I just turn the HVAC off and use the heated seat and steering wheel so engine doesn't come on. I think Hyundais are generally pretty reliable, but feel they have a higher lemon rate than most. The worst part about Hyundai is all the recalls and the backed up service departments as a result. 6-7 weeks for an appt around Boston. Kia dealerships interestingly are 1-2 weeks.

    I enjoy the channel but tbh, this “review” was not very in depth and overly focused on nitpicky subjective/visual observations. The car wasn’t even driven. There are some valid points but at the same time a lot of the opinions are definitely outliers and don’t echo the majority of other reviews and user opinions on this vehicle, and there is some irony with the rav4 comparisons which is widely criticized for its dated and boring interior, infotainment/tech, driving experience, etc…things most other reviews praise the new Tuscon for. Then of course if you’re comparing plug-in to plug-in there is the fact that the RAV4 prime is a significantly more expensive vehicle.
    I currently have an ICE RAV4 Limited and have never owned a Hyundai but the “strange and incomplete” title and final consensus here seemed unusually negative without a lot of reason or coverage of the overall features, mechanics, and performance for the money. I’ve been looking into hybrids/plug-ins and while every vehicle has pros and cons, the overall consensus on the Tuscon plug-in is very positive everywhere else. This is also the first time I’ve seen the drive/hybrid system described as clunky…again that’s the opposite of other reviews. As mentioned, the reliability is probably the big question mark but overall I have to say that the Tuscon seems to deliver more bang for the buck and a more modern feature set/design compared to the RAV4, and most others in the segment for that matter.

    Too much nitpicking here... I have the 2022 HEV for 18 months and I am more than happy with it... Nothing strange or inconvenient, very fun to drive, very comfortable and practical...
    27:00 From what you said here I can conclude that you might have a faulty car to test... Nothing like that I found while driving 4 different Tucson HEV/PHEV's, including mine. In normal drive in Eco you don't even know when the engine has started... Yes, as any classic automatic gearbox there is some delay when you push it out of the sudden, but it's just fine and predictable and when you get used to this car there are no issues at all. One of the biggest reasons I got this car is indeed that it doesn't have a CVT. The only thing I can agree with you is that PHEV should have got some dedicated heating system.

  • @Turbofan53
    @Turbofan53 Год назад +12

    As a Toyota master mechanic, I am not surprised you were quite critical of this model. Granted, the Tucson phev system doesn't quite measure up to the rav4 prime, as the Hyundai has a 13.8kw/h vs 18 kw/h for the Toyota respectively. However, here in Canada there is also a $10,000 difference between the two...if you can get a prime within the next 2-3 years. I currently own a 2020 rav4 xse hybrid, and I can tell you that Toyota is not without it's design peculiarities also. Not to mention the rav4 high voltage hybrid 'cablegate' disaster, which until recently Toyota refused to repair under warranty, and passed on the $7000 cad repair to its customers. If it appears that I am getting off track, it is due to the many comparative comments you make to the rav in your video, which seem designed to disparage the Hyundai compared to the competition. Why don't you review either the hybrid or phev models from each company side by each, and point out their individual feature sets? Besides being a much more credible means of identifying competing models strengths/weaknesses, you might end up being surprised at the outcome...

    • @garynair5143
      @garynair5143 Год назад

      He doesnt have to disparage Hyundai/Kia's, their poor quality speaks for themeselves with poor engine build quality (metal flakes in engines), firehazards, transmissions issues, and usb breached thefts. Theyve set aside $2 Billion and counting for these. ruclips.net/video/uTBSZDMLXS0/видео.html My neighbor is on his 3rd Hyundai Tuscson engine. Covered under their 10 year warranty, which I suppose is why they needed such a warranty

    • @Turbofan53
      @Turbofan53 Год назад +3

      @@garynair5143 You're right, Hyundai had/have a massive problem with their 2.4l engine from the 2013 or so era. Point is, he's not reviewing cars from 10 years ago, but rather a specific 2023 model, and comparing it to his beloved toyota. As mentioned, I have a 2020 rav xse hybrid, and to say that it is not without flaws would be highly inaccurate. The latest being the "cablegate" fiasco affecting hybrid powertrains, and for months Toyota refused to take responsibility for an issue affecting vurtually all hybrid rav4s! Only when a class-action lawsuit was filed did they decide to step up and honor their warranty, as they knew a court ruling would not favor them. So yes, Hyundai/Kia, like all manufacturers, have endured their share of quality mis-steps, but they have taken giant leaps in recent years, and are nipping at the heels of the established players in this highly competitive market.

    I own a 2022 Tucson Hybrid, and the 1.6 turbo engine is extremely quick. I don't know how you can make some of these observations. There is no hesitation like you say. It is quick off the line, especially in sport mode when it uses less of the electric motor. There is immediate torque. the 6-speed automatic is excellent and smooth as well. You say it is clunky. That is not true. When the engine transitions from the electric motor it is seamless. You can't even feel the difference. the handoff between the two is completely unnoticeable. I'm not sure how you arrive at your opinion. smart mode is a feature that learns your driving habit and whether or not to use more or less electric motor. it's not as gimmicky as you think. But you chose not to mention any of these things. You forgot to mention the quality of the paint job and the precision of the gaps in the body. It's a well-built vehicle. Hyundai took some risks in their design and made something that doesn't look like every other cookie-cutter model on the road. There is always a critic though and that's your opinion. I would have changed some things too. No car is perfect but I find several inaccuracies in your review. Make sure to mention in your RAV 4 review how loud and whiny the CVT transmission is and how loud the cabin is. Be sure to mention that Toyota needs to update its interior and its outdated infotainment system. My friend owns the RAV 4 hybrid and we get the same gas mileage so if the CVT is supposed to help with that I'd rather have a traditional tranny. Thanks otherwise for your excellent channel and wise automotive wisdom.

    I confused about this review..
    Maybe your car was a pre-production model or they updated the engine software?
    I have owned this Tucson PHEV for little more than 3 weeks now and driven a little more than 2000 miles with it.
    The engine and transition between EV and hybrid/petrol mode are not noticable, it's super-smooth - no delays.
    And the different driving modes really makes a BIG difference, in sportmode it's super responsive but in ECO mode it's more conservative - just as you'd expect.
    It's not a rocket but it does 0-60 mph in just over 7 seconds, more than enough to give you a nice overtakes.
    Also had to check that thing about the backseat belts, they are not like in your video - they lay flat to the seat, just as in any car. 😂
    Made a trip through Germany with a lot of autobahn, and the consumption was 6 liter/100 km or 39.20 U.S. MPG in average, without a charged battery, speeds up to 150 kmh / 93mph.
    I think thats pretty good numbers.

Other than a small green "EV" on the dash, you don't notice the engine going on/off. I recently did an extended trip thru the mountains of WV. In my mind, that's a real world test for a hybrid. The powertrain response was really impressive! The gas engine supplemented by the electric motor was fine on all but the steepest grades. On those, the transmission downshifted willingly, barely noticeable. The mountain trip did make me wish it had a bigger hybrid battery. BTW, with my foot off the gas, the electric motor has enough regenerative braking to nicely control downhill (5% grade) speed.

    It is disappointing to see him nitpick so many details that don't really matter. The ergonomic design, I'm sure, will cause issues with repairs, but whether you like the design is a very subjective thing. I personally love the design as it stands out from other cars, which are mostly quite boring, both on the exterior and interior. The turn signal thing does kind of suck and it would have cool to be able to mod it to work sequentially like some Mustangs are modded to do , but it is at the height of a normal car and it's not like you will see yourself while driving so it's not a huge deal.
    The capacitive buttons and the button shifter do suck, but are both going to be redone in the 2025 model year, which will also make use of the extra space by moving the wireless charging pad to a more accessible area right where the shifter was and adds wireless android auto and apple carplay.
    The materials are not perfect, but are really that different most cars in its segment.
    You can't find any car anywhere near this price point that has this combination of looks, features, and technology. I have a 2022 Ice Limited and love it. I plan on trading up to a plug-in hybrid when the 2025 design refresh models come out later this year.

    This review is stranger than the car..many complaints about things that simply is no problem. For example the "hump" in the back window is not visble when sitting in the car. The middle neck rest is a bit higher than the "hump". Seems like this guy simply does not like the car, before even trying it. I took this car for a test and it's a really nice car - like it way more than the Toyota RAV4 Prime.

    Very disappointed. You didn't talk about the engine and the hybrid system and how it works in details and what can one expect like you did in the Chrysler Pacifica hybrid. This is a plug in hybrid too and spent less than 30 seconds to talk about the engine and the systems. You should make a new video and cover it like you did in the Pacifica video and put it on a lift and look at the bottom and the hybrid components in details from a mechanics view.

    Generally appreciate your comments and your technical knowledge on cars. It's clear you have a bias against this particular car. I don't agree that this car feels cheap inside. It feels luxurious to me, especially compared to its main competitor, the Toyota Rav4 PHEV. The fit and finish of this car is a tier above that in all ways in my book. Where are your turn signal cams in the Toyota? Your real leather seats? Ambient lighting with a bunch of colors? Appealing screen that doesn't pop out of the dash like a tablet? The Hyundai design is more upscale and more functional. Turbo charged engine sounds WAY better than that buzzy unrefined engine in the Toyota. I would say it is a little quirky but in a good way. It definitely has moments where it feels like a BMW X3 to me. I can deal with the lack of the volume knob for all of the other great features inside this thing. Plus it costs like $7k less than the Rav4 Prime XSE. Not a fast car? Compared to what? It is as fast as any other similarly sized 6-cylinder SUVs and can MOVE off the line when you want/need it to. 260 horsepower with 258 lb/ft of torque is something for a vehicle that also give you gas free commutes any day of the week and take you on the longer haul weekend trips without stopping to charge.

    Great car until it gets cold outside. Defrost and cabin heat takes forever and trying to run in electric mode causes the gas engine to run at high idle constantly. It actually uses more fuel in electric than HEV mode when the temps are below 40 degrees F. Scraping the windshield and clearing the wipers is a nightmare because the hood partly covers the wiper arms and they cannot be raised off the glass. DOH! Hyundai engineers totally missed cold weather performance. We have to use HEV mode just to keep the windshield clear to drive safely.

      I know it's been a long time since you posted but there is a way to have the raise the wipers to a higher position so you can clean or change them. Just pull on the wiper lever for 2 seconds after turning off the car and then you can push it back when you are finished. I know it's defeats the purpose when they are stuck because of ice and you will have to free them first, but it's something. Hope this helps.

Turns out it is a metal pulley that controls the compressors for the system. Hyundai's wait time to repair it.....4 MONTHS on a BRAND NEW vehicle. I'm not a mechanic, but I can see a reason behind using ICE to warm the cabin. Its just a choice they made, because of this the car is a bit less expensive, and it will keep the engine oil warm too, in case a sudden acceleration is needed and ICE needs to be on. Not a big issue in my eyes. For some people the PHEV should behave like an EV, for others its more an HEV.
    Also there is a video showing difference in range of EVs between heat pump and the regular resistive heating cabin up - the range was something like 5miles better, and the time it got warmer was 1min sooner for the air pump. Not a huge difference at least for a BEV.
    Regarding the hydro-kinetic AT - it feels way better than eCVT in a Toyota RAV4 to me. Yes, I do notice the gear changes and its OK for me and probably for most people, its just that maybe You got used to high revs and smoother acceleration, and I got used to low revs and gear changes. I still prefer the AT instead of DCT in the same Tucson/Sportage model, and I hear some people have it other way around - to each he's own.
    I recently ordered a Sportage HEV and before that I test drove RAV4 - the availability, warranty, tech, looks, price, soundproofing and the usage of space made a pretty a easy win for KIA. It will probably not last 20 years, but 'm not keeping it that long, and the MPGs will not be as great as in a Toyota but the price diff means it would be a loooong time before RAV4's 20-30% more cost will be used on fuel

  • @IgorChudakov

    I've bought this pligin a year ago. SEL model, which is simpler inside. But it is cheaper. And with Federak tax return the final cost was as same as the regular Hybrid. It is not possible now, because Biden decided to return fed tax for the US assmbled EVs/PHEVs only. So, I was lucky :)
    The SEL inside looks and feels even a tad cheaper than the shown model in this review, but I don't really care - it is my working horse now. Everyday commute makes me buying gas about once in 6-8 weeks, and at the same time I'm not worry about going skiing and camping. The hybrid part of it makes gas based travel less expensive than my previous cossovers.
    Switching between EV and gas motors is very smooth.
    The only strange part of it - why can;t it reccuperate more than ~20% of the battery even on the long down hill driving... Don't now how Toyota Prime deals with it, but such limited reccuperation is annoying.

    Still getting to grips with it, agree about some of the styling choices and lack of buttons. But actually the engine / battery combo is super slick. If it wasn't for a diagram showing me what was going on, I'd be hard pressed to tell you what the car was doing! Bravo to Hyundai (this is my first). As an owner of this generation Tucson, the few substantive things that should be improved upon are rear turn-signal placement, gear selector and center dash material, and physical button/dials for HVAC etc. Turn signal - too low for visibility in all situations; dangerous in traffic/bumper-to-bumper traffic etc. Gear selector should be rotary, much more intuitive. Center dash should do away with piano black surfaces and bring back buttons/dials, more intuitive to use. Rear logo placement is fine, nice and flush and out of the way - kudos for that. This car feels as good as RAV-4 and CRV, comfortable seats, ride and plenty of room for people and cargo. Plus excellent warranty and not run-of-the-mill design inside and out.

      The Sportage is identical under the hood. The one item that concerned me was the HSG after I bought the car. I saw this video and it got me concerned. Then I watched a few other videos on how it actually works, teardown of the hsg, testing of the hsg etc and realized it’s very unlikely to fail. The biggest concern I have is that the belt will need to be replaced every 4 years. I’m hoping a mechanic posts a video on how to change the belt so I can do it myself. It doesn’t seem too complicated. Honda and Toyota use an Atkinson engine vs Hyundais traditional engine design. The Atkinson is not really suppose to be used to drive the vehicle as it is most efficient running at a set rpm.

The main safety feature that I see with the buttons is, when you open the driver door and forgot put “P” the car shift automatically to “P” from “R” or “D”. I think you can’t do that with a regular stick driven selector. The only car I have seen is the Jeep with this safety feature and with the stick. The other reason when yo are driving on any road at any speed and the driver try to select other like P or R the dashboard say this selection is not allowed 🚫 a this moment, another feature. And the other things is this buttons are designed to the high trims with self-driving, when you get out and with the Fob, you move the car back and forward.
