I can say with confidence that this was fan service done on Universal illumination's side than Nintendo's. They had to have done some hard convincing to get Nintendo to agree to this. You can tell the animators at that studio are die hard fans of the franchise. Props to Universal and illumination for putting this together. Also the Teen titans Go directors (whom are helming this movie) are legends when it comes to producing creative content to promote their stuff. Huge W all around... except Nintendo who probably was just making it hard to let them do this.
