I also watched it as a child, around the same age as you. I remember thinking “as soon as i’m old enough i’ll get a nose job”. There is nothing wrong with my nose, just because some dumb boy told me my nose looked like michael jacksons. I’m glad I realized how bad of an idea it was & now i actually like my nose. I never thought i would get to a point were i’d be happy to have the one i got.
Were you really thinking like that as a kid? I was about 4 years older then you. But, even that would've been a bit much to think about at that young age.
@fpshooterful I had a lot of problems with my self esteem when I was a kid, being bullied especially for my nose and weight. Seeing that you could "fix" your face- or everything really- was definitely impressionable. I still have self image issues, but still learning to love myself the way I am.
As someone who had plastic surgery for medical reasons, I will say it's not something you should just walk into lightly. The actual physical recovery was okay for me, but the emotional impact took my by surprise. It was so unexpected because I had wanted/needed this surgery for years, but then all of these strong emotions came out of nowhere, and I really struggled for a bit afterwards. I have no regrets, would do again in a heartbeat, but the idea that a reality show would just offer all of this surgery free of cost without really informing the participants of the impacts or allowing them to really see the results or potential results is a level of unethical that can't even be fathomed. This idea that you can just walk into plastic surgery and walk out feeling great is blatantly false. Even if it's something you really need or want, it WILL impact you in big ways.
For me, it is the opposite. These days "tummy tucks", "mommy makeovers", BBLs, veneers, face lifts, are really normalized, and normal looking 20+ years olds are doing it. When I was young I was horrified by it.
You’re delusional if you think that. Plastic surgery and fillers are very common. Do i think it’s necessary? No not really but acting like it’s a small set of people is a part of the problem. There’s a huge issue with self image
I was a young teenage girl when this show happened. And I cant tell you how much I wanted to be them. To magically have the perfect body instead of being fat. Shows like this helped to ruin my body image in a way I still struggle with 😢
Speaking of theses different dark side series, It would be interesting to see a series on the dark side of music. Not just episodes on bands and musicians but the also genres, record companies and all other aspects of the industry. An episode on lip sync dark sides would make a good one in the series.
That’s a lie because the tv show was staged to make it seem like the surgeries were staggered. But they all did the surgery and weightloss all at the same time. None of them had gained any weight back by the pageant.
Why Terry Debrow (and that other Botched guy) never fixed THEIR noses, being plastic surgeons obsessed with aestethic perfection? 🤔 Rich white men really try the least... bad teeth, big guts, funny noses... and then go marry supermodels
True, my mother always called herself ugly and used to cut herself out of photographs! She would pick on my flaws too and I’ve seen her do it to my kids
Man, this came out probably when I was in high school, and I always looked at it as the "Jump the Shark" moment for crazy Fox "reality" TV shows. It was just so fucked up.
I watched this TV Show when I was teenager and felt amazing. But then I grew up and realize it was scary. It's also sad when someone live in others beauty standard and hate about them self. I remember one of the cast felt sorry after the show.
I remember this show when it was out, I was about 14. Looking back- I can’t believe the message that women need these extreme makeovers to be “accepted”. As much as I love reality tv this was LOW.
Got hyluronic acid for a lifelong insecurity but even despite that, it was emotionally such an impact to see myself as something different. It was JARRING.
Damn you are going LIGHT on the swan and on everyone involved. This isn't a lighthearted "all is well that ends well" story. Have you recieved paychecks by the producers?
Yes, the experience was difficult and dangerous, and most of the "cast members"/participants/contestants, if not all, probably didn't know how hard and demanding it was going to be. But a big part of that was the ambition of the show/producers to POSITIVELY transform the women as much as possible. The producers genuinely wanted to and believed in making the lives of these women ultimately better, and in that objective the show WAS successful. The participants were obviously women with real struggles in life: physical, mental, and emotional. The show helped them with some of those things, but obviously the show was traumatic for many of them and perhaps even harmful in ways. I feel this show was net-positive for the participants although ideally it would have been more careful. The show became an example of "modern vanity and female objectification" for judgmental pearl-clutchers, but ask all the participants if they could go back and stop themselves from participating and most (perhaps all?) of them would admit they ultimately benefitted from the experience. And in fact if you actually watch the full episode from Vice, they end with that question posed to the 3 women who participated in the show and ALL 3 of them say they are grateful for the experience and the experience was a net-positive in their life. I am glad they ended on that note in the episode. Having to also listen to the highly critical and absolute hater of the show, Jennifer Pozner, was annoying to say the least. You can watch this full episode: www.vicetv.com/en_us/video/the-swan/66958101ff53c4aba10ff4c4
Surprisingly most of these women are now in their 50s and look like most 50 year old women. So went through all those painful surgeries for nothing in the end, because obviously it did not improve their quality of life, maybe made it worse by having implants in them which are uncomfortable and possibly toxic.
I didn't watch it but I watched it on Luxeria's channel and it's wild! So offensive, so rude, so incredibly insensitive and wrong, I can not believe any credible doctor would took a part in that.
I don’t get the hate. These people were dissatisfied with their looks and were given an opportunity to have surgeries and increase their self-esteem. They’re complaining about it now but they sure wouldn’t like to go back to what they looked like before🙄
I don't get the point. They were not forced. They had the freedom to walk out anytime. Why are they mad? I think; you made your bed, and now lie in it.
Because professionals were telling vulnerable women who'd probably been called ugly their whole lives that they could become what society deemed "beautiful" and it must've been very hard to argue and say no to that. Having been a teenager at the time the 00s was a hellish time to be a woman.
Imagine looking better going out than you did coming in, getting all types of FREE surgical enhancements most people who want, can't afford..... Then complaining about gifts as though they were curses.
Soooo…. You guys still aren’t happy? Remember people…. You get what you pay for. Oh you think you weren’t treated right? Well for 3 payments of $999.99 I’ll bring you over to my “hospital” (which has mirrors) and there are no rules. I WILL make you look like the swan you’ve always wanted to be. 3 payments guys. “The Swan” was truly insane and evil.
No worse Than The Bachelor which is like a modern sex slave auction...
How traumatic not recognising yourself and your family especially the kids wouldn't 😢
I remember this show as a child. Now watching this as an adult this is so disturbing.

@ this is the height of 2000’s television 😂 this and wife swap
This is disgusting. Everything that needed fixing was on the inside.
BOTH. Both were needed but probably more interior than exterior work as is the case with most people who go under the knife...
If you are ugly, you are ugly. Stop talking about inner beauty because men don't walk around with X-rays to see inner beauty.
@@BonShula Beauty is genderless, it's not just women who have to be beautiful by the worlds standards.
Free surgery is "everyone's dream"? Lmao, maybe only in Beverly Hills or South Korea.

yeah, and now he's trying to rebuild his reputation with botched. Hypocrite
It's a shame that counseling along with physical transformation wasn't offered.

This show disturbed me as a kid. I remember when they did the pagent show and some of the women had gained all the weight back.
Almost everyone that was on The Biggest Loser has gained all their weight back, plus some. 😢
That’s a lie because the tv show was staged to make it seem like the surgeries were staggered. But they all did the surgery and weightloss all at the same time. None of them had gained any weight back by the pageant.

Botched surgeons had nosejob both 😅 results are not guarantised 😂
They said they did 200 surgeries in 2 weeks...thats how much plastic surgeons do in a year on average

Honestly they weren't even that bad looking, sure they weren't Milan Fashion Week worthy but they all had some nice features to begin with.
New clothes and a fresh haircut can do so much.😊
Please make the videos longer 🙏🙏🙌
I think they were actually quite cute before the transformation.
The fact that Dubrow makes no apologies and sees nothing wrong with what that show did to the contestants and those who watched it.
Have you seen his face lately. He looks like he has a mask sewn onto his face.

I remember when this was on, it was all over the news, everyone hated it, how did this ever get approved
It's the soul that needs the surgery 😔
i've waiting for someone to do a review on the SWAN series. I watched this in high school all summer before my senior year. It was insane.
The worst/best reality show of all time... Depending on your perspective...
I wanted to be on this show sooooo bad. I was a little girl 😭

How horrible !! Hope this women have fully healed from this effed up experience
No, plastic surgery - having ourselves sliced and diced on a table, is NOT everyone's dream. Plenty of people love ourselves!

@@PilotFlight2Mars I see what you did there. Very nice.
It wasn't scripted, some of these women had lasting psychological damage from this show.
Reality tv wasn’t scripted back then, it was manipulated. Reality tv is scripted now because it can’t be manipulated in the same way.
It's not just the initial surgery, the upkeep and top up treatments and long term consequences are an ongoing problem physically and financially.
