Protein skimmers, sometime referred to as foam fractionators, are used to remove dissolved solids and the fine particulates that mechanical filtration does not catch. In the system, a part of the protein skimmer removes the solid deposition at the bottom of the biofilter, and another part reactivates the stripped biofilm in the biofilter and adds beneficial microorganisms, returning back to the biofilter and thus forming an internal circulation. The skimming process is most effective in saltwater systems.
