- Brave Battle Saga is a JRPG launched in 2018 for the Sega Genesis / Megadrive. The game, originally launched as bootleg in Taiwan back in 1996, but Piko Interactive bought the rights to the game, translated it to English and is now selling it on physical format.

Despite being developed in Taiwan, the game was heavily inspired by the likes of Squaresoft's Final Fantasy 6 and Breath of Fire 2.

Started playing this on my Evercade. It's slightly more difficult than other 16-bit RPGs I've played but I like that you can basically save almost everywhere.
It's been a while since o played it but I remember once you learn certain spells/summons you basically just have to spam them but I can't remember which ones
@@st1ka im also playing It on the Evercade. Its not bad for a multigame cartridge of 17.99€
Glad you pick these up and review them. You always do a fantastic job. I would love to purchase these games, but the lack of quality control with Piko keeps me from spending my money there. In this day and age, there’s no excuse.
the original release also had final fantasy art on the cover apparently
Yep it did. But that's pretty common for bootlegs. Crack Down for example was called metal gear solid in Russia
This is probably the prettiest unlicensed game I’ve ever seen
A few unlicensed games were surprisingly high quality. If you can, check out a game called "Water Margin" for the Sega Genesis.
@@st1ka I heard you mention it. That looks pretty great too.
@@noaht2005 There are also some indie modern releases for console that look even better too. If you get the chance, check out games like Xeno Crisis or Paprium :)
@@st1ka I generally don’t think of modern homebrew games in the same way as older unlicensed games like this, but those are still impressive. Great stuff!
@@noaht2005 completely understandable ^^
This game is very balanced this isn't that hard the challenging part is getting lost when going in to maze areas other then that it's a fun game
oh yeah I did get lost in some areas. But overall I really enjoyed it
Not many people know about this game@@st1ka
I know this comment is a bit late, but 2:49 is that a playable version of Phantasy Star 4 in the background, like a mod or something?
Ah no it's just a Pixel art spoof of Phantasy Star 4 :)
Love the intro to your video!👍 Thanks for the video!
Anytime! Glad you enjoyed it! :D
This video needs plot spoilers alert.
Recently discovered your channel and am currently going through several of your videos.
I doubt I'm going to get this myself, but I appreciate Piko's game preservation activities
I'd rather the alternate cover in the manual because...hot demon girls
haha
It blows my mind how games are keeping retro consoles alive today. Good review! I laughed pretty hard at your Cherie comment. It really does sound like a standard JRPG though.
I just started playing this on my Legends Flashback. It's very hard and there's lots of grinding. But I really like the story and the way it plays.
It's a surprisingly well made game considering it was done by bootleggers.
And also officially sold on Steam, by Piko publisher!
It contains the english version ROM file and Mednafen emulator!
Even some PS1 games are avaliable...
Yep true! ^^
When I heard this was a bootleg game, I was like, nah, there's no way this game can be any good, zero percent chance. But after watching this, I'm gonna have to place an order for it.
So. Did Piko really translated the game or just ripped off the fan translation?
Sadly, I don't know. If they used a fan translation I hope the translator was asked permission at least.
Knowing how scummy Piko is, it wouldn’t surprise me
Looks good! Who said the Mega Drive lacked colours?
Ah yes, the classic Genesis game: Final Fantasy. With hot pog action.
Apparently even the original Chinese version uses the Final Fantasy name & art for the box. So the Russian publisher didn't come up with that idea, they just rolled with what the original did.
Ah, that makes sense.
I bought this game from Pico. It was ok. I also bought a water margin released by them. Both games looked very good but both games were to repetitive for became stale pretty quick.
your intro is beautiful, great job on that
I am really sorry to ask, but your voice... What is going on here? Do you use some kind of filter or something? Or maybe you went though an accident that damaged your voice box, or something?
It's my accent lol
@@st1ka Oh no no no! Your accent is fine! (are you from a Scandinavian country btw?) I have one too. Even in my native language (because of the region I come from, which had been in a case of "linguistic isolation" for hundreds of years...). No, I'm talking about the voice. I have never heard this "tone" of voice before, and obviously made a very bad joke attempt about it; sorry about that btw...
You could speak any language, but your tone of voice would stay the same, and this is what I am talking about.
Either way, great video dude. I have bought all of Piko's Genesis/MD repro cartridges, with all of the cases and stuff (well, except the absolute trash made Wisdom Tree/Color Dreams; I think they had 2 or so cartridges for sale with those horrible games).
I never had the time to play any of them, so I'll certainly watch your other videos about them.
You've got my sub, dear man with a very funny and mysterious voice ;)
@@Unholy_Louie Well I will admit this is an older video, but yeah I guess it's just how my voice sounds xD
I couldn´t believe these were all original graphics but they are! Even though they are heavily inspired by Breath of Fire II and Final Fantasy III/VI the pixel art is redesigned and in another scale than the SNES games. Very ambitious for an unlicenced game. I find the price to be fair for a small scale production of cart, box and manual.
Once again the box art of the game is horrible, while the game is really good for both the console and the RPG genre.
Excellent video as always.
Despite the flaws I wouldn't mind getting it. Just to give it at least 1 go. Btw the monster at 10:16 looks like the first boss from valis 3 but recolored
Phantasy Star 4 is awesome
The game is 16:9? huh?
Oh cool! Thanks for answering! And wow a frame meister! That's expensive and hard to find, though you're a collector so i guess you made it work! Sweet good for you!
ohhh wow! and it's supposed to fix input deplay as well, right? have you noticed a difference? It wouldn't matter for an rpg but for a beat-em up it should. I don't think i notice a difference myself when playing but maybe because it only shows when you've played alot with non-input delay.
What do you edit the footage with?
i didn't know that. huh, lucky Europeans! I wish I had a...PAL! ;) hahaha.
I use Adobe premiere as well. You do a good job with it!
Omg
:D
Hey! I remember pogs! Still don't know what they're for but I remember them!
They were played in the US (don't know about Canada). I've seen some of my classmates with them, but never seen them played.
What an interesting way to steal money from kids.
We bought them mostly cause... cool looking circle art. There wasn't as much random merchandise of everything like there was nowadays.
great video, braaaaaaaaahhhh
Is the game available to buy with a Mega Drive label? Or do all the carts come with Genesis on it?
I wonder why? They should at least say both on the label.
@st1ka You would think Pico would take that into account.
@st1ka I'm pretty sure though that not all Pico Mega Drive releases just have Genesis on the carts?
@st1ka Except this one? Weird to leave this one out.
i hate this mini/classic console type, really a worst hardware + emulator, you can get free in you PC or mobile phone ;)
The game is on Steam now, and it's about $5. The only bad part about this version is that it's literally just a ROM of the game with an emulator, (Mednafen) but then again, this let's you play the game on your PC however you want. For me, that's playing the game on RetroArch with a CRT shader. Probably the best way to emulate the feel of playing the game on an old-school CRT on your mid-to-high spec PC.
Oh it's on Steam now? That's pretty cool.
I just bought Brave Battle Saga & Water Margin. I hope the the quality of the cartridge molds and fitted labels are better now. We'll see... St1ka, have you ever played Beggar Price, by Super Fighter Team?
Sadly, back when Super Fighter Team was making new releases, I was going through some financial troubles and never bought any of their games.
The only game from them that I ever pre-ordered was Vixen 357... which they would later cancel. I'd love to review all of their games, but I don't want to pay the outrageous Ebay prices.
I would place the map on my wall, the pog too or put it in my backpack hehehe
understandable xD
I have barver battle it's awsome it's so many spells and magic in this game
I really enjoyed the game. It was quite the nice surprise, especially for a bootleg game.
Piko's releases are always so fugly... xD There's just no quality in the materials/packaging/artwork, everything screams amateurish. Also, is it just me or this game is ripping off some assets from Secret of Mana? Some little things are oddly similar, such as that forest and even some of the menus. My guess is this is a mishmash between two different games.
Seriously Ali Express has better options.
The Artist of this cover created the following IPs:
•Switchblade
•Rick Dangerous
•Rick Dangerous 2
•WolfChild
•Bubba and Stix
Quite the repertory for someone with deviant arty fugly drawing skills.
Yes, we are a Western publisher, it would be logical we would want to go with Western style to mimic Japanese localizations in the 90s.
Luckily everybody is free to acquire the rights of games and release them in the style they see fits best!
I like the Reversible covers ideas. Only problem is, what if the artist we hire for the JP art style does it not so JP and ends up being a bit western. But thanks for the pointer.
Nice graphics, very well done, just to say
Oh agreed the graphics and music are really well done.
somenoe knows where can i find a walkthrough of the game? i am stuck!
I had to look up longplays and let's plays when I was stuck.
@@st1ka i dont know where to find the wine for the drunken Scholar for the exam in lear empire
@@thefunframe7912 Sadly, I don't remember. It's been 2 years since I played this :\
@@st1ka thanks i followed your recommendations and found it. but it i interesting that nobody still has written any walkthrough, just the you tube videos do exist.
@@thefunframe7912 Not surprising, the game is pretty obscure and it's not easy to get a hold of.
Spoiler warning bro!
Awesome graphics!
oh yeah the game looks really good and it's especially surprising considering it's a bootleg
Parabéns pelo outro ótimo upload meu amigo St1ka.
@@st1ka Google translate BTW 😆
Amigo c teria ai essa rom em ingles q pudesse disponibilizar pra mim? Eu consegui a traducao a um tempo atras mas ai fucando meu pc essa semana eu perdi a rom.
Fantastic review, st1ka! I agree with a lot of the things you said. But I did like the cover art, and sometimes the story was really funny, like when Edison and Einstein nagged at each other, or when the party lied to the guard and said they had the same mother but different fathers - "What a promiscuous woman." :D.
Thanks for sharing this ,) awesome stuff.
I remember getting this game when I was a kid. It didn't even have a box. But I got it anyway since it was rare to see a game in Chinese. Pretty much every game that came to Hong Kong and Taiwan at that time were in Japanese. Plus they named it "Final Fantasy" to trick stupid kids like me. I think I got to the ice castle thing before my saves got corrupted and I just traded in the game for something else. I should give it another try.
-2018 game
-St1ka's "retro" corner
Also, "I have heard that in Russia (where bootlegs are popular) the translation was incomprehensible"
Hmm, you do sure seem to have a lot of intimate knowledge about Russia for an allegedly Portuguese citizen...
