A point not covered so far is that foreign medical graduates have a lower success rate in most British medical exams. The disparity is widest for the MRCGP, whose candidates have to know a little about everything. A study many years ago (when the exam format was different) found that having diplomas (taken after 6 months as an SHO) in things like obstetrics and gynaecology, or paediatrics, made no difference, but the MRCP(UK) helped. The MRCP also helped FMGs, but they still had a lower pass rate than local graduates. Maybe that was due to better understanding of the local culture. There has probably been more research on this, but I have not looked for it.
Why do you think that psychiatry tends to have lower rates of competition for specialty training? I've been told that it has one of the best work-to-life balances (most psychiatrists work 9-5, essentially), so you would think it would be more appealing to people.

Nice show Lavnya, may I ask is there any formal retirement age for doctors working for NHS and outside NHS? What are the common specialties that IMGs felt interested to join?
That question is more complicated than it seems. It used to be the case that men had to retire at 65 and women at 60, but that sex discrimination was abolished and everyone had to work till 65, but then age discrimination led to abolition of fixed retirement ages in many fields. I think the NHS has an upper age limit for locum doctors now: possibly 70? What matters to most people is the state pension age, which has been going up. Currently it is 66, but it will soon be 67 and may rise further due to the ageing population. However, you can take an occupational pension, such as that of the NHS, earlier. Despite all that, many doctors retire much earlier, especially psychiatrists. Some retire, start collecting a pension, and come back part-time, or move to private work. However, the later you start collecting your pension, the higher it may be. Balance that against the impossibility of forecasting when you are going to be ill, get dementia, or die!
