It's so easy in this day and age, with all the technology we have, to forget what a beautiful skill binding a book by hand is. I just spent half an hour watching a man work with his hands, without saying a word. I admit, in the first couple of minutes I was saying to myself, "okay, I get it, do I have to watch you fold every single page?" I don't know how I stumbled into this video in the wee hours of the night, but very quickly I found myself staring silently at the screen, completely in awe, taking in every single step. Most of us take for granted the amount of love that is put into the books we buy. We simply notice the work of the author and the illustrator. Well done, sir. Thank you.
I don’t know how I ended up here but I’m glad I did. No words, no fancy tools, just results with what I may have around the house. This is what I needed and thank you for your time and for sharing.
It's been just over 2years since I first found you on RUclips, and after a lot more tutorials and reading I finally am ready to start bookbinding for myself. I now have all my materials, tools, and pdf's to turn into books. I am bound to make mistakes along the way, but I'm okay with that. Thank you for helping me get started on this journey.
I will never look at a bound book the same after viewing your video. My father used to love to bind books but he never let us watch him. I had no idea it was so much work. Beautiful video. Thank you very much. It was lovely.
You realise you just said the same thing two different ways? Book binding starts from making the signatures. Anything else is how to stitch it together.
Check if they're thread bound or just glued together at the spine, makes a huge difference in sturdiness. Also, they're most definitely not handmade haha 😅
Just think, this is how it used to be done a couple of centuries ago before modern machines. Incredible craftsman skills still being used today, amazing to watch.
Thank you for such a relaxing, informative and professional tutorial. It was so nice not to have the "noise" of someone's vacuous chit chat or selection of irritating music droning on! This is how I will bind my journals(just nowhere as good). Thank you.
Thank you Peter. This is a masterclass in sewn board binding from a master craftsman. No gimmicks, no distractions, just clear instructions. Well done.
Oh, sure! Bookbinder he is, film producer and editor he is NOT. I had to skip a lot of it because the footage was just repetitive. How many times does a person need to see them folding or cutting a piece of paper? A few times is great, seeing him fold or cut every fecken one is intolerable. Overall, there was about twenty minutes of video where you actually learn something. The rest was repetitive filler. The constant piercing of holes was horribly inefficient too. By lining up the block, marking lines where the holes are to be and then sawing slits with a 24 tooth hacksaw blade, the holes are made in seconds....literary. Then he's showing the stitching from the wrong side. You don't haver to know what the inside looks like, because that doesn't show the real meat....the kettle stitch. I find this to be a poorly done, and ill thought out, tutorial.
Angelus_Solus , lucky you. You seem to have some experience with book binding, and you seem to be a quick learner. I however am new to this, and being in my very senior years of life with the slowing of cognitive functions greatly appreciated the repetitive steps shown here. Your advice about the line up of pages and using the saw were good too.
@@nadurkee46 Oh, wow. I didn't expect anyone to actually say anything good about me, so....thanks. I do wish you the best on your journey and don't mind the fact that you're not as sharp as you used to be. Getting there is what's important, not how long it takes.

Wow! That was fantastic! I've seen tons of videos about book binding but for me this is the best one. Direct and clear. Without any ramblings or wasted time. Finally I've understand several things I didn't before. Thank you so much! :)
Congratulations, Peter! A clean and well-made video, exemplary at every stage for a refined and elegant final work..No need to deafen with inappropriate music ... Essential, direct, complete technique, and an impeccable result! Who uploads videos, should be silent, observe and learn ... Thank you very much
Thank you for a clear purely visual tutorial. I could understand what you were doing because I have previous binding experience. Thanks for not chatting and having bad music.
This was such a joy to watch. I’ve made a couple of journals that screamed “hand made” - maybe by a child. This video has filled in all the details I need to make mine look professional. Thank you so much for sharing your technique!
Brilliant! An art which I've overlooked. You made it look easy, but the amount of planning and precision is more than I imagined it to be. I was spellbound.
Thank you for this, this is a very useful practical binding. I have several software and hardware user manuals, anywhere from 80 to over 200 pages, that I want to print out in booklet form and bind for convenience, in approximately A5 size. This method will work very well, with one variation: I will print out a cover for each book on heavy paper, which I will then wrap and glue around the outside of the end paper folio to make a sturdy cover consisting of four layers of heavy paper. The back will have the identical paper without the printed cover.
Both informative, very precise and clear, and also soothing to watch it. Thank you for this. Also seeing how you sewed them together and the loops, made a lot more sense now compared to others I have seen. Again thank you.
As I have poor vision, I would have appreciated some verbal instructions, but then each of us is different in how we learn. Thank you for taking the time to do this tutorial.
I used your instruction to make a little notebook a while ago and it’s full proof! I do wish this annotated in some way. It’s still useful either way. :)
I've had to watch this 3 times over, to figure out exactly where I got lost....and I still have no idea. =( ....which is really too bad, because your results are absolutely fabulous.
@@mayaracoele He doesn't show anything about the stitching, other than what's on the inside. WTF is up with that? My comment exactly...there was no need to talk his hands said it all!!
honestly, the so-called modern technology does not make the bookbinding technique better, but make it cheaper.
