John Lennon, listed as Dr. Winston O. Boogie, plays guitar and sings background vocals. His voice is quite evident during the chorus. Lennon was very impressed with Elton's rendition of this Fab 4 classic.

Wow, how nice to try this one! Great song by the Beatles and it gets true Elton treatment. Can't go wrong with these musical pedigrees! For a way cool tune by Elton try Madman Across the Water. The original album version is an utter classic as is the extended version which has Mick Ronson on guitar (from David Bowie's Spiders from Mars, you need to do them, too!) making for a hypnotic jam between them as they explore this great song. Thanks again for listening to real music! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎶

Being a Beatles fan, I would of course take their original version over Elton's but with that said, Elton did a fantastic job covering it in his style. I have to make a point on how great a job Nigel Olson, Elton's drummer, did on this. You can hear his drumming throughout the song. You need to come back and play several more songs from this album. Don't think there is a bad song on it.

    • @frankpentangeli7945

Nigel Olsson is a criminally underrated drummer, and was a large part of Elton's success. His drumming is always fantastic and appropriate to the song, and the SOUND of his drums has rarely been surpassed. I know part of that is the impeccable production on most Elton John albums in general, but I think a major part of it is how Olsson tunes and hits his drums. An incredible musician!!

Nice! I forgot about the reggae bit in the middle of this. Elton John also covered "Pinball Wizard" by The Who in 1975. That was the year The Who's 1969 rock opera, Tommy, was adapted to film by director Ken Russell. Elton John plays the part of the Pinball Wizard in the film. He shows up dressed in these crazy stilt boots and plays a piano keyboard embedded in a giant pinball machine as he sings the song. The movie is a hoot and then some. Elton John's cover is great -- John Lennon provides backing vocals and guitars -- but "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" forever belongs to The Beatles. It was the lead single from their seminal 1967 album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". I was born a few months after it was released, so I can't speak to expectations or immediate reactions back then. But I can say that "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" continued to get radio airplay for several years after because I remember hearing it on the radio as a little kid a few years later. In 1974 paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson named the 3 million year old fossil specimen of Australopithecus afarensis "Lucy" because "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was playing on loop in his digging camp when he found it. When I was a teenager I thought the title was hippie code speak reference for LSD. But it wasn't. It was just a song based on a child's drawing.

Elton John's is the first version of this song that I heard - back when it came out. I didn't know till later that it was originally a Beatles song. I was in high school at the time, and it was played on the radio all the time. It was one of my favorite songs at the time. Once I heard the Beatles' original, I liked it better and still do - it's more psychedelic, more ethereal. But Elton John's version is very nice too - he definitely added his own flavor to it, to answer your question. The Beatles' version appears on their most famous album, Sgt. If I had to choose, I would lean towards The Beatles original as it is quite the epic production and maybe even more fantastical. BTW, your analysis is spot on right down to the weed part. Of course there was the 'controversy' over the acronym of the title 'LSD' and that it was what the song was about. (an LSD trip). AL 288-1, commonly known as Lucy, is a collection of several hundred pieces of fossilized bone representing 40 percent of a female of the hominin species Australopithecus afarensis. Lucy was discovered in 1974 in Africa, at Hadar, a site in the Awash Valley of the Afar Triangle in Ethiopia, by paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The Lucy specimen is an early australopithecine and is dated to about 3.2 million years ago.
"Lucy" acquired her name from the 1967 song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" by the Beatles, which was played loudly and repeatedly in the expedition camp all evening after the excavation team's first day of work on the recovery site. After public announcement of the discovery, Lucy captured much public interest, becoming a household name at the time.

However it was John Lennon’s son who brought home a drawing he made in school when he was very small and John looked at it and said to his son what is this up here and his son said oh that’s Lucy in the sky with diamonds and they wrote the rest of the lyrics from there

I like that you do different themes for your reactions. A suggestion if you do this again, do the original then the cover.
It would be fun to see.
    Keep it up!

This version was pretty good, but the only person that I found that could cover the Beatles and make it sound as good or better was Joe Cocker. My two favorites are "With a Little Help from my Friends" and "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window"

Another one of those urban myths. I guess you don't know your Beatles history. John's son Julian came home from school with a drawing, and when John asked about the drawing, Julian told him it was lucy in the sky with diamonds. If you've ever seen a photo of the drawing, the title is written on the drawing. The "Lucy" in the title is a reference to a schoolmate of Julian's.The song lyrics are pretty much inspired by Lewis Caroll's Alice In Wonderland. John was a fan of Lewis Caroll.

@@amb2745 Yeah, you don’t get it. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Johns son came home with a drawing? I know about the drawing. Paul even said it’s about “Lennon’s Sons Drawing.” LSD. Apparently you don’t understand Beatles History and didn’t get the joke. Notice you didn’t say painting or artwork. This is literally known as the “Lennon’s Sons Drawing” Explanation. You even use the words Son and Drawing and still don’t get it. Lewis Carroll wrote under the influence too. If the only thing it was about was about was his so\Ms drawing then why bring Lewis Carroll into it. It was a hint that Lennon was trolling. I’m not the only one that figured out this joke by John and Paul.
