I really feel for you both here. I also work in a school in the UK, and while the staff know about me there are precious few students who do. It's not something I choose to hide, but the topic hasn't arisen from the students and I'm not certain that discussing my personal life is something I want to encourage - for exactly the same reasons as you both, the parents. There are quite a high number of lesbian couples on the staff, thankfully, so I'm not alone, and we're all cautious in one way or another.
Aw it definitely is troubling that we all feel like we have to be cautious to some degree because I'm sure that the heterosexual staff done think twice about this. I feel like this is where I've chosen to take a stand and talk about my life in the same way I would have talked about it when I was married to a man. Thankfully, I haven't had an issue but I know it's likely it could still happen. Hopefully one day this is something we no longer have to even think about!
Thank-you for sharing Emily. My cousin and her wife are both involved with early childhood education. My cousin is a school librarian, and her wife teachers at a catholic elementary school. Her wife teachers I think it is either 3rd or 4th grade. Their daughter is adopted from China. They have both raised her to be bilingual. I am not sure if my cousin's wife is out at her school were she teaches, because it is a Catholic elementary school. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding day.
I think you two are wonderful and you are incredible ambassadors for love which incidentally has no gender, but you two are already blissfully aware of that. I grew up in an era of bad teachers, who worked on the basis of aggression to get results. At least one particular individual who has since had the good grace to die, betrayed a student's trust during school time, he was not disciplined. But after four o'clock, or whenever the final bell for the day rings, it is no longer anyone's business what a teacher does with their personal life, subject to the laws of the state obviously, but social media means that all of us are more exposed than we used to be, and there always be assholes out there attempting to use whatever they dredge up in an effort to belittle other people. Being on the LGBTQ+ spectrum is not a path anyone chooses, instead it chooses anyone, but hate, which has many forms, is a choice. 'Adore the two of you, 'not ashamed to say it.
You make a beautiful couple 🙂 congratulations on your engagement. Thank you for sharing your stories. I wish you both many many years of love and happiness ❤️
This reminds me of how some parents treated a likely LGBTQ teacher at my high school because he was popular with the students. Parents were on red alert unfairly speculating that he may be a pedophile when one teacher (who they weren't suspicious of) was a weight room voyeur, and another would buy his students beer in exchange fir them performing yard work at his house.
First off you both make such a cute couple! As for the actual topic I'm sorry one of your students found out about your relationship, but given the rise of social media in recent years it's probably going to be more common now. At least they gave you a private heads up how this news was going viral w/other students in school. Also in general being out as LGBTQ is no shame now-a-days, but I guess its still riskier being a public (or private) teacher now compared to say the 90s & before though.
It's sad that in a country like the USA you still have to be afraid of possible negative repercussions if you're out in the workplace in the 21st century. This is exactly why visibility is so important, especially in teaching facilities where, on the one hand, people can see that you're no different if you're not straight and, on the other hand, people who might question themselves can come to you for questions and support. I'm pansexual and in a straight presenting marriage. For a while I just used to have a Pride button on my bag. As of lately I started stating my pronouns on my mail signature as well as wearing a rainbow wrist band in my new place of work (although a real estate administration is a rather conservative workplace). I want to try to show more representation this way.
Definitely agree but think that's awesome that you're also taking steps to show who you are! I think with more visibility, the more it will become the norm!
Hi Emily and Michelle, I'm so glad to see you happy and excited about your life and future together. I came across your channel not long after you created it almost four years ago. It's been a treat to watch you grow and become the happy, joyous people you are and I'm really glad you found each other. I check in periodically to see what's up and how your journey is going. I don't comment much on videos I watch unless I have something of importance to say. So here goes - I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer and y'all might have already considered this because you are both pretty freaking bright, BUT after the "Roe" decision I realized, and Clarence Thomas has since confirmed, that the Supreme Court is going to revisit Marriage Equality among other previous decisions that will affect women and the LGBTQ+ community. They will turn these decisions back to the states to legislate, which is totally unconstitutional, for more than one reason. But hey the Constitution never stops right wing nutters from forcing their beliefs on anyone they can. . Anyhoo I digress, I don't know if the Court has granted "certiorari" to any cases for the upcoming session to strike down these specific rulings, to hell with "stare decisis" and precedent, but it is coming. In a very short time Marriage Equality will not be the law of the land. Leaving it up to the individual states will create one of the biggest "clusterfucks" this country has ever put upon itself. How will this even work? You can be married in a particular state but if you move to another that doesn't recognize Marriage Equality, are you suddenly not married anymore? Or will same -sex marriages be "grandfathered" in. I don't know how they expect this to be a viable option. So just some food for thought as you are planning your upcoming nuptials. I know that Missouri is more conservative but I don't know the mood of it's citizenry. I do know that my state, Louisiana, will jump at the chance to ban Marriage Equality and anything else in an attempt to control peoples behavior. This state is full of Catholics and puritanical Protestants. I apologize in advance if this message brings you down but I thought it would be prudent of me to give y'all a heads up. Make love not war - K-K
Hello! Thank you for watching and following my journey! I appreciate your concern and this may not be the answer people want to hear but Michelle nor I allow the politics of this country to stress us out or bring us down. We honestly don't need our government to recognize if we are married or not. Our love isn't about our government or anyone else. We know the vow and commitment we'll make between ourselves is real and genuine despite whatever someone else might want to think or believe. So whatever happens, we will still be married to each other by our own vows and commitment to each other whether the government chooses to recognize it or not.
@@TheLateLifeLesbian I'm very glad to know that is your attitude. My partner and I had the same mindset. We were together for 28 years before I lost her four years ago. It is a long time since I was in high school. I was in high school from 1991-1996. I first heard the word lesbian in high school. During this time there was a few teachers kids would speculate were lesbian. Mostly because of their butch appearance. Back then it was just that though, speculation. You didn’t have social media so the teachers lives were private. Luckily for them. Now I am an adult I always wonder though if the rumours were true. Did the kids get it right? There were a couple other teachers that I wonder could of been gay too. Not that anyone else though so. Just me because of my own feelings I was discovering. My music teacher and art teacher. Both beautiful and both two classes I could not wait to go too, but also could not wait for them to be over. It was torture to be around them 😂
