I've been watching a lot of your old videos and the difference with this one is striking. Not just the cinematography and sound which is obviously much improved, but at first you were so formal and tentative and trying to be "professional" and by this time you were just letting your personality come out and these videos just overflow with energy and fun. It's been fun watching the evolution.
If you still have the molds you used, I would suggest remaking the resin back plate and tinting it a MUCH more opaque white, milling out the ON AIR letters and filling them in with a transparent red so when the light is on, it only shows through the red letters rather than the white background...The translucent white makes the sign hard to read...
Hey dude, if your resin is super cold it's good to give the bottles a warm bath for 5 minutes, it makes it much easier to measure and mix. Also using a drill to mix it is the reason your "clear" sheet was so frosty, there are loads of microbubbles in it. It's best to set a timer for 5 minutes and mix by hand. If you don't have a timer just mix it for as long as you think it could possibly take to mix the ingredients, scrape the sides, then mix until you want to gouge out your eyes with a grapefruit spoon. McDonald's drink stirrers are excellent for small batches.
@@John_Malecki So you're saying I actually have to watch the video before telling you you're doing everything wrong? How professional, that's never going to work on RUclips.
hahah sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesnt. But a lot of people suggested no drill. I think with the ultra slow setting stuff is the only time a drill is good, because it has so long to let air release
You are talking about Rocketman. 😎😎 Your art and builds are so inspiring to me, you make me want to be more ambitious with my life just watching how much you enjoy life. ❤️ Youre a great rolmodel to a number of people.
I can picture the standing on top of the roof scene now...great movie! Even greater build video, John. Really enjoyed all the problem solving in this build!
Movie is Almost Famous, but not gonna lie, never seen it (not sure how I remember where the music is from though). Great use of epoxy to make something that doesn't have a lake/stream/pond/brook/gulf in it. Love how the light comes through. For the shou sugi ban finish, does it matter if you're using map gas or propane (yellow vs blue fuel)? Never done it before, but would love to give it a try.
One of the other Wood & Resin builders I watch (sorry, can't remember which one) puts his resin bottles in a hot water bath just prior to pouring & mixing, that way even if the shop is cold, the resin isn't and it pours/mixes nicely...
A way to make this easier and cheaper is just red and white acrylic or PVC sheets and skip that step. Hobby shops usually have finished lettering too if you want to go real basic with it. Or you can buy vinyl sheets, cut it with a vinyl cutter and stick it to the back of a clear acrylic sheet.
John, your page is such an inspiration! I used to post a lot of how to videos on my page before I went deaf. Because of creators like you i recently decided to start uploading content again even though my audio may not be up to par like it used to be. Just like you I love to teach people new things! Thank you!
@john do you have the plans and the cnc save file for the on air sign? I work at a small radio station in northern Michigan and would love to make a few of these as gifts for my on-air coworkers!
How well would a straight router bit work for cutting an inlay into epoxy? Looking to make a white epoxy table, router a logo into it then fill it with blue
That movie is Almost as Famous as you. :) Great build. You never cease to amaze me. Quick question, what type of wood is this? You may have said I missed it.
Love the girly scream when the epoxy broke. I imagine a few harsher words off camera. lol. Question: did the epoxy gum up the drum sander belt much? Did you have to clean it often? Very cool sign. I appreciate you leaving in all the missteps. Not enough people do that. We all know nothing goes as planned. It's nice when someone isn't afraid to acknowledge that with their own videos.
Good to know, John. I guess then it's kinda like when varnish or poly cures it sands off as a white dust instead of gumming up. That knowledge will come in handy for the future. Thanks for that.
I know you had to change your design half way through but your box is too shallow for the light source. Maybe make a cutout for the light so that it sits slightly further back?
Switch should go in SERIES with the supply, not in parallel :P I guess you tripped the breaker? (or blew up the powersupply) well, you learned it for next time :) and the end result was great!
Worst thing about the stuff you make is all the sweet equipment you got going on in the shop :D Im doing a sign for my mates company atm, its a bit more lowkey routing out the letters in a piece of wood filling it with epoxy :D
This looked great! I've been loving watching your videos especially the epoxy/resin ones and your deck series! Just curious what song was playing at the end of this video while you were putting the magnets in?
@UCVUSDq6-oSpWAAPUppHFtZQ ah, damn my bad. Thanks for the info. You have great content, I instantly subscribed. Keep it up, you got this YT thing down!:)
Was really thinking that would have turned out better than it did. The light / led used is very underwhelming . The light shines through and drowns out the ‘On Air’ so meh
Stuff you know: Easier ways to do this besides $25 worth of epoxy. And using that drill for mixing caused micro bubbles really bad ... Use a stick or something that moves slow enough to avoid introducing air. Thick epoxy takes more than 8 hours to cure hard especially in cold air. ... Checking voltage requirements before wiring is a good idea. Yeah ... but you got the light you wanted.🤣🤣
depends on the atmospheric temperature. So yes and no to your "FACT" . If the room is cooler than the recommended curing temperature of the manufacturer. it will actually take longer. It is beneficial to keep the resin as cool as possible in general, but freezing temperatures is obviously very different.
Ya like is aid, cooler temps help epoxy cure. The chemical reaction actually produces heat. So keeping it cool is important. But the 3 brands I have used, all tend to work best in the temp range suggested on the packaging, above and below give issues
John Malecki CORRECT. When I work on an epoxy project in the winter the bucket I'm holding with the epoxy starts getting warmer and warmer. Subscribed.

Personally, I would use LED tape around the inner perimeter. Everything else is fantastic.
correct
The on air panel needs to be edge lit to stop it looking like a blob of light in the center.

Thanks for a RAD video. I'm a designer who's studying up before my first resin pour... Very fun to watch you.

or you could cnc the letters into a piece of wood, pour the resin and them plane off the back of the sign so the epoxy letter let light through. :)

Sign came out nice and good recovery after that little mishap with the resin! Your shop continues to come along nicely.
Thank you! ya the shop is coming along ! little bit at a time
awesome idea, I bet that shop is becoming a great place to spend all your time.
Yea its really coming together nicely

Probably "Almost Famous" is the more well-known use of that song, tho'.
Almost Famous, my favorite movie.
You should do some epoxy river floating book shelves or something that would be cool
You sir just got me to subscribe for your outstanding vocals and movie knowledge lol 👍🏼
Its what i think my true future is
John Malecki no doubt, ur wasting your time making stuff
I see a bunch of folks have gotten the movie correct, a great film indeed.
Pretty slick idea, and it serves a purpose.
Thanks NIck!
Loved the video I like that you show your mishaps and how you fix them in stead of editing them out keep the videos coming!!!!
GLad you enjoyed it Todd! Im not perfect haha so why not show it
Great work John!

This is something every content creator needs. Thanks John! Very Cool and Fun Video to watch and learn from!

Thanks....It was a good movie. I have seen it more than a few times.
I was wondering why you would use MAP gas for removing bubbles from the epoxy resin, then I saw the sponsor. Yay bernzomatic!
Ive always used it tho, MAP or Propane. you could use a heat gun, i dont have a huge heat gun tho
@@John_Malecki my apologies! I go for the cheaper propane whenever possible.
yep works just as well!

I know you had to change your design half way through but your box is too shallow for the light source. Maybe make a cutout for the light so that it sits slightly further back?
what makes you say its too shallow? not enough space for it to reflect inside ?
@@John_Malecki yes. When the light comes on it just blurs the red and white together. If it was further back the light would diffuse more.
What do you use for your drill when mixing a small amount like you have in the video?
should try a red tint spray over the lights
I will have to give that a shot
That’s what I was thinking
Is melemeame a wood and can you buy it in pre-cut sizes?
What are you using to mix the epoxy?
Whats the best temp for it to harden?
You'd think companies would sell a cnc Machine with a hose beside the milling bit
How did you secure the white resin plank to the CNC? Carpet tape?
Double sided tape
great video...question:who is the music you used for this video?
Is the movie “Almost Famous”?
Looks like you need a diffuser layer behind the sign layer

the best way to make sure your epoxy will cure the same every time is use a scale in grams, and use the mix rate IE 100 to 33
