  • Here is a great example of why I continue to practice low vision care. Of course, there is no typical day in low vision, but success stories similar to Kathy's are a regular occurrence. Kathy has Dominant Optic Atrophy and following is a summarized version of the full story shared in the video:
"I've always had poor vision. I first got glasses in 7th grade and it seemed like I needed new ones every year. In 1998, my eye doctor sent me to a specialist since my best corrected vision was 20/40 in one eye and 20/50 in the other. Over the next two years, I saw a specialist who suggested that I had a congenital defect of my optic nerves. In November 2012, my vision worsened to 20/70 in one eye and 20/80 in the other, and I was classified as having low vision. However, no one offered me resources to help with daily tasks, such as improving my home lighting.
After months of inconclusive tests, I saw a neuro-ophthalmologist who confirmed that I have Dominant Optic Atrophy. Although there was no way to reverse my vision loss, I managed to adapt to my situation. In December 2021, I found Dr. Long and Midwest Low Vision on RUclips. I scheduled an appointment, and Dr. Long actually listened to my goals and concerns. I ended up getting two pairs of special glasses: reading telescopic glasses for near and bioptic telescopic glasses for distance.
In January 2022, I got my bioptics, and I could read signs across a store and see the 20/40 line clearly. In February, I got my telescopic reading glasses, which allowed me to read my phone and menus in restaurants without struggling. I also wanted to drive again without feeling anxious, so I went through Vocational Rehabilitation, a state program that helps with achieving everyday life goals. I had a driver assessment and began bioptic driver training in February 2023.
On March 21, 2023, I took my driving test and passed, becoming a licensed bioptic driver. Now, I can drive without restrictions, and my world has opened up in ways I didn't think possible. I am amazed at how much better life is with the bioptics, and I even wear the distance pair to watch TV. Dr. Long, Holly, and the rest of the staff at Midwest Low Vision are fantastic and have made my life better in countless ways!" -Kathy S.

Dr. Long is definitely one of the great ones, he really cares, he is one that helps his patients to best utilize the vision that they still do have, unfortunately I can't say the same about many other doctors, you are greatly appreciated Dr. Long, i believe I've spoken with you a few times over the phone

Are there glasses that could help correct wavy distortions in one eye because of macular degeneration that make driving and close vision harder to focus.

Will these work on a patient who has low vision due to myopic, keratoconus, and macular degeneration. Very high stigmatism. Also due to macula and retina reattachment. He wears rigid gas permeable contacts.

I am a patient with Cone Dystrophy and I have been to different doctors here in the US and I am not getting any help. Could those glasses help me? One of my biggest challenges is being able to drive. Could these glasses help me?
