    Oath of the Open Sea is top tier flavor-wise and mechanically and I'm so glad we got to see it. Also, while the aura does something basically exactly like Freedom of Movement, it's also on the spell list for two reasons: the first is for flavor, but I fully believe the second is so someone like Beau or Veth could use it to deal with the distant targets without losing movement options while the heavier close quarters combatants could gang up on a closer one. In other words, I think it's to make sure a faster character can do their own thing without being slowed down by the rest of the group. All in all, I fully agree with your points!! Excellent video!

    Also about the gunslinger - You can see in the first campaign of CR that the class was a work in progress when they did the videos. There were several instances where Matt and Taliesin were like "this doesn't work as intented, let's rewrite this feature after the session" I really think that subclass would look much different if Matt would make it now.

    • @CitanulsPumpkin
      @CitanulsPumpkin 3 года назад +1

      Echo knight is pretty easy to fit into any campaign. Just reflavor the echo as anything you want it to be. Summoned nightmare beasts, living shadows, Naruto style shadow clones, woodland critters, the ghosts of long dead ancestors, the ghosts of your slain enemies, a cloud of sentient nano machines, ink creatures drawn and summoned in the heat of battle, your own self from the future, the manifestation of a sentient magic item you've been carrying around, etc...
      It's a summoner subclass that depends on your fighter's stats, feats, and weapon variety. Those mechanics can be used to fit thousands of character concepts in just as many settings.

    I will say as far as the gunslinger subclass, while the halfing argument is good to point out for balance, only the three weaker guns the subclass offers have a misfire score of 1. To start really getting range and/or higher damage die, the misfire score is either a 2 or 3, so still no halfling reroll. Just wanted to point that out.

The options from the Tal'dorei Guide were Blood Domain cleric, Path of the Juggernaut, Runechild and the original version of Way of the Cobalt Soul. The gunslinger has more of a tactical disadvantage. Imagine your in a castle moving your way through the floors/halls. Then you hear BOOM now the entire town knows were you are. When i was watching cr1 I remember multiple times percival saying Im useless if I do anything then we are going to be swarmed. This was later taken care of when he upgraded The Diplomacy with the silence spell that moves with him. But Percy was also handicapped by being the only person in the world with guns he had to make all his own shot and had to go to a specific country to a certain spot to get black powder. Only thing i wish he did was make a shotgun.....

    That being said, i also self impose a house rule that the Echo can only be used equal to proficiency bonus per long rest. VERY easy balancer there, especially since it can still very easily be knocked out by AoEs and just in general, a good slash n bash.

    • @CitanulsPumpkin
      @CitanulsPumpkin 3 года назад

      Realistically, there's no problem with infinite use on the echoes. What exactly does the echo do? It dominates the fighter's bonus action and it gives them 30 feet range on melee attacks and free misty step at later levels.
      On a fighter. That's not the game breaker people think it is. The echo is never going to have more than 14 AC and 1 HP. There's so many ways a good DM can take out the echo every turn. Hell, if you just take flying PCs into account when you prep your fights you negate most of the advantages the echo gives. The game then becomes a nonstop series of epic battle moments for the fighter, while under the hood the mechanics are "The fighter used their bonus action on a flashy extra attack and not any broken thing they picked up with feats or multiclassing."

    I think the second channel divinity from the path of the open sea subclass, the one where you can push your enemy away, is based on the idea that this Paladin is going to roam the sea on a ship. When you are on a ship you have a limited fighting area on or under the deck with a higher chance to push someone into a wall or the mast for example. You could also push someone of the ship into the water basically taking them out for a turn or so. Imo this truly adds to the flavour of this subclass.

    The Gunner feat specifically says the Loading property, not the Reload propery, which are two VERY different things. Mercer’s Firearms work differently from that of the DMG and therefore could never be a bottomless magazine affair the same way that Muskets with the Gunner feat are.
    Also, if you’re lucky enough to have a cool DM like mine, you can eliminate the need for black powder by saying that they’re fulminate mercury percussion capped and instead of the extrapolated ammo crafting rules Mercer made, simplify it to an auto-pass with Tinker’s Tools, 10 pieces of ammo per 1 gold spent.

    • @angelagranger760

      While I don't think the power in and of itself is overpowered because the bead only lasts for one hour, effectively ensuring it still counts as a missing spell slot for purposes of needing to rest and recover it, the objects made by an artificer can be dispelled, stolen, lost and/or require attunement or don't work for others and usually require a long rest to create

    I really understand why Matt has (as far as I've made it into the video) made very strong subclasses, because the players being strong isn't really a problem in the way he does things, because he can just make his monsters bigger and scarier, both making the player feel good rather than it being weak

    Oath of the Open Sea is more broken than you think. The fog makes it so you are heavily obscured.
    Heavily obscured essentially makes you blind while perceiving through it. But since you and your allies are immune to this effect, any enemy that steps within the fog has disadvantage on attacks and you and your allies have advantage without concentration and not being able to be dispelled

    Honestly I made all firearms be magic weapons in my games so that I could make them as overpowered as they should be, cause if there magic items that means it’s not very easy to get your hands on them for most beings at least.

    I really like the echo knight and how it plays. I don't think it's broken. It is as you say not a creature. You can attack from it's place but with your weapon that you are holding. The echo knight can't hold things it can't open a door and it's highly visible so it is not so great as a spy. It can't get into places and it is easy to trap. Sure you can create a new one and the fact you can do so at will does make it very very strong but does this make your fighter as powerful as a wizard? I don't think so. It is probably the best fighter in the game if you use it cleverly and it rewards tricky players who think in 3 dimensions but it's not much stronger than the Tasha's fighters and it doesn't break the game.

      11:45 btw you can expend any number of charged runes I believe. Each charged rune expended reduces it by 1d6.
      Which means sayyy the previous two turns you used a twin disintegrate and a quickened firebolt, which requires 9 sorcery points and thus lights up 9 runes... Then the opponent blasts you with an attack, you can reduce the damage by 9d6....
      So no, its not pretty weak I should think.
      12:24 best use for it is stealth I think.
      Personally I think Runechild is way too powerful compared to other sorcerers actually. Too synergistically useful compared to other sorcerer subclasses.
      (and yes I hate most of Mercer's homebrew, save for a few, because of this)

    "Broken" is just a word for people who are too scared to write hard encounters
    If your players have strong tools, give them challenges that seem out of their league. Strength only exists to those willing to seize it

    I think this is interesting, but would be better with an adjustment to approaches.
    Nothing is "broken" if it is made for that table. If you run games like it's still AD&D then, yes, many things are "Broken", but if you run a game for the characters the players bring, then hopefully you won't build generic encounters for specialized characters.
    Respectfully. I just think broken doesn't exist.

    Have you heard anything about optimization? When you call an echo imba, you seem to suddenly forget that he is a warrior (trash1-10)?! You might as well spy - invisible warlock pokemon and call it strong... This archetype doesn't even come close with a high-level samurai warrior.
    Even the flank rule will not help this interesting, but not strong echo archetype... because the class pulls him to the bottom.

    Realistically, none of Matt Mercer's subclasses are half as broken as twilight cleric. None of his wizards are more broken than just being a wizard. No matter how many revisions come to Cobalt Soul, it's still a monk. Echo knight is the best pet class/summoner in the game, but it's on a fighter. Same with gunslinger. Blood Hunter is so much of an edgelord's wet dream that if you're not careful you're gonna cut yourself on all its edginess.
    The simply truth is that if you allow your players to take levels in most Tasha's subclasses there is nothing released by Mercer that will break your game. Balance is a myth dreamed up by armchair DMs and people who can't wrap their heads around the fact that the game has never been balanced.
    Edit: The echo knight echo can't be targeted? It has 14 AC and 1 HP. It should be going down every round and take up the fighter's bonus avtion each turn to resummon. It doesn't matter if some spells can't target it because it's not a creature. Literally every enemy with a damage dealing cantrip or a weapon can take it out.
