The Baltimore classification system categorizes viruses based on their genome and replication strategy. Developed by Nobel laureate David Baltimore, it classifies viruses into seven groups (I to VII). Group I includes double-stranded DNA viruses, Group II single-stranded DNA viruses, Group III double-stranded RNA viruses, and Group IV single-stranded RNA viruses. Group V encompasses single-stranded RNA (-ve) retroviruses, while Group VI consists of reverse-transcribing RNA viruses. Group VII includes double-stranded DNA viruses. This classification aids in understanding viral replication mechanisms and has implications for antiviral drug development. The system offers a comprehensive framework for studying diverse viruses, facilitating insights into their biology and potential treatment strategies.
