You might consider adding a couple of 1/4" magnets there by the ports for the two spindle bearings. Seems like that would take care of that fine swarf/dust in there.

Since leaving this comment six months ago, I got a G0709 lathe. Basically, this lathe's older brother. I put two 1.25" magnets on the bottom of the headstock cavity, and two small 1/4" magnets near the spindle bearings (front and rear). Basically, one little 1/4" magnet sits on either side of oil hole(s) that feeds each bearing. It works great.
Overall, I think your lathe has some definite improvements over the one I bought, but there were a couple of features I preferred on this G0709...the lack of the need to change gears being one of them. Of course I had to buy a DRO extra and install it, but that wasn't terrible. These things are fairly nice lathes for the money, and likely better than most people give them credit for.

Oh, forgot... I don't mess around with draining the headstock at all. I simply pull the top cover off the headstock, and then siphon the oil out using a large hose and suction bulb. Takes about 3-4 minutes, and also allows me to inspect the inside of the headstock. Of course I'll need to keep a couple of cover gaskets in stock, as they'll wear out from time to time--but it seems like a small price to pay for the piece of mind that comes with being able to inspect the gears, and keep an eye on any swarf building up in the headstock.
