I just thought Id mention that lives were removed because they were basically useless in other mario games due to the infinite lives glitch/exploit which people were using. Also in general lives were easy to get because just getting coins got you lives as well as getting the flagpole. I must say they could have handled it better as only a -10 coin penalty is a little disappointing.
A desert is technically an area of land that that has a low amount of precipitation. Not all of them are hot. In fact the Gobi desert is extremely cold, and snows sometimes. :)
