    A build like this screams to spend the extra money to make the stairs internal!

      It's nice when you can do that but has some big downsides when the goal is apartments. You lose a LOT of internal square footage, more than just the stairs themselves, because each tenant will need/want their own private entrance for security reasons. So You'd need to create a vestibule/common entryway on the first floor (which probably means losing a garage bay), and every flight up then needs its own footprint plus its own vestibule so it can have a lockable door, head clearance, etc. Each apartment also needs some type of outside egress for fire escape, so you'd still need to work out something like this anyway.

      @@chadrobinson3504 yeah i see that now. I'm just looking at this build and how after an ice storm it's essentially impossible to leave. How the first and second are already sharing their entry, etc. maybe some proper roofing and protection for the stairs.

    I would be great if you could put the staircase in an attached stair tower with a hip roof. It’s efficient and saves interior space. It also might add a little more architectural interest to the structure. I would definitely be interested in such a design.
