For those who don't know what this is about: "Vesti la giubba" (Put on the costume) is a famous tenor aria from Ruggero Leoncavallo's 1892 opera Pagliacci. "Vesti la giubba" is sung at the conclusion of the first act, when Canio discovers his wife's infidelity, but must nevertheless prepare for his performance as Pagliaccio the clown because "The show must go on".
It's basically _musical theater_ at the highest level. I highly recommend you watch this (Pagliacchi), 'Carmen', and the hilarious 'Marriage of Figaro' in their entirety.
During the "big part" that everyone knows he's saying "laugh clown at your broken love, laugh at the grief that poisons your heart." The whole song's a great insight on what its like to be a performer. Putting on your costume every night to make people happy while your internal struggles go unnoticed. Doesn't matter if its a clown in the 19th century or a famous comedic actor in 2014, thats some true shit.
Thanks Nick. Although opera is now considered passe, it was once the ultimate in performing arts because it combined theater, orchestral and vocal music pare excellence. If anybody wants to suggest that Rap/Hip-Hop is just as vital as opera for the world, I am listening.............
