The gravity decreases both above and below the Earth's surface:
Above the surface: Gravity decreases as you move higher above the Earth's surface. This decrease is described by the height formula ( g(1 - \frac{2h}{r}) ), where ( h ) is the height above the surface.
Below the surface: Gravity decreases as you move deeper into the Earth. This decrease is described by the depth formula ( g(1 - \frac{d}{r}) ), where ( d ) is the depth below the surface.
In both cases, the decrease in gravitational acceleration is due to the increase in distance from the center of mass of the Earth.
g at 1km above will remain same (-2hg/R is for 20-500km height ) for below the surface gd/R where d is the depth below which the quantity is being calculated

Exactly. I can't remember formulas, even during jee I used to derive formulas from basics. I can only remember some graphical stuff.
My approach was like...gravitational force (thus gravity) increases "linearly" from 0 to r and then decreases in a parabolic fashion. It means the slope is higher for r > R.

It can be answered by looking at graph only as for 1 km downward it decreases in stright line and for 1 km upward it decreases non linearly so it decreases more in upward case so if you can't remember formula still it's easy to answer as everyone remembers that graph
