I went through oxalate dumping a few years back when I went strict carnivore, as a desperate attempt to get my psoriasis in some kind of control (didn’t work) when the oxalate dumping happened, the symptoms were so uncomfortable and weird on top of looking like a burn victim from all the psoriasis, it was to much. When I looked the symptoms up, did I feel so duped cause I was doing all those smoothies in the early 2000s. It was like if it’s high in oxalate, the more healthy it is.
After all the people I hired that were supposedly cable of helping me, that over charged for how inept they were. From chiropractors and physical therapists, multiple naturopaths, auto immune specialist dietitians, acupuncturists, dermatologists. The only branch that actually helped after years of failure and getting completely drained financially and not getting better but worse after their help was a functional medicine dr.
For all the things we have figured out, we still seem to barely understand how the body actually works and what it actually needs. It seems that is the result of the mass corruption of the entirety of science and medicine.

Hey Mike. I was eating copious amount of nuts daily along with spinach and other leafy greens and was suffering from joint pain and eye gland inflammation for several years. After reading Sally Norton's book, "Toxic Superfoods" I decided to take these foods out of my diet. Within a few months, most of these issues cleared up. My anecdotal conclusion was it was the oxalates that were giving my these symptoms. Thanks for addressing this subject. I feel many people are suffering an over exposure to oxalates and are not aware of the dangers.

It's always fascinating to learn the newly discovered benefits to why our ancestors ate what they did, how they ate it, and why. For example, reducing oxalate levels in specific veggies via fermentation and water soaking. For a supposedly ignorant and unintelligent people, our ancestors seemed to know a lot more than we give them credit for. Modern people often discard old traditions, thinking they're out dated, not knowing why those traditions existed in the first place, and it almost invariably leads to bad outcomes.

My wife is unique. She is HIGHLY affected by oxalates. We did not know this until we went on the keto diet. AND TO BE CLEAR!!! The Keto diet was NOT the problem. The problem is that if you are not aware of oxalates, then keto can easily be a high oxalate diet. Almost all the stables are high oxalates like kale, spinach, NUTS, etc. So we’re on keto and my wife has a regular physical. Her blood test comes back with creatinine through the roof. We though she had a genetic disease and was going to die or go on dialysis. She lost a ton of kidney function. But in the end it was oxalates. Once we got her off the oxalates and cleaned out here system she was much better. She did not get the kidney function back, but she is out of the woods. Bottom line - get your blood tested.

Whoa! I never knew parsley was so oxalate-heavy. There are a lot of people touting the benefits of apigenin and there are people consuming several grams of parsley daily in order to get a large enough dose of apigenin. According to the table at 5:36 these people would be consuming over a gram of oxalate per day. I doubt the apigenin benefits outweigh the downside of such an overdose of oxalates.
I have suffered over a dozen kidney stones, one so large it required a non-invasive surgical intervention. Since going carnivore almost two years ago my kidneys are happy campers.

Yeah it has lots in it. But when was the last time you had more than a pinch or two of parsley in your food? It's not like spinach, where people will eat a bag of it in a sitting.
I don't really give much thought to the seasonings we use, or the once in a while fruit or vegetable we eat with some oxalate in them.. The body is capable of ridding itself of oxalate. It's just not designed to be trying to get rid of a gram or two of it per day. You've experienced yourself the result of diets like that.
Glad you're doing better now. I went mostly Carnivore because of chronic and intensely painful heartburn that stopped the moment I stopped eating seed oils and bread. Similar for me. Feel so much better.

Citric acid dissolves oxalates and can therefore help reduce problems with the accumulation of oxalate crystals in the body. Citric acid is best taken in the form of fresh lemons or freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Oxalates are easily dealt with by the microbe that eats them, Oxalobacter formigenes. Eat raw unwashed spinach in tiny quantities, gradually increasing the daily amount.
Roasted nuts or cooked greens will not work.
I had terrible oxalate problems before colonizing my digestive system with these helpful microbes. No problems now. My Biomesight stool tests show healthy amounts of this microbe.

Mike, I have a couple of questions. 1) Why do so many doctors recommend these foods and say that they have a positive healthy effect? Do Doctors not know about oxalates? Yes, some people may have problems with oxalates, but do ALL people have problems? 2) What about the hormetic effect of oxalates? Of course some people may be alergic, but some may receive a hormetic benefit. How can you be sure that the toxic effect is worse than the hormetic benefit for ALL people?

After I first started keto a few years ago, in my mid/late 50s, I developed a kidney stone. Excruciatingly painful! After the fact, while I was researching kidney stones, I discovered a lot of the things I was eating were high in oxalates, such as spinach, beet greens, swiss chard, dark chocolate. I cut all that stuff out, and thankfully I haven't had any trouble since, now heading into my mid 60s. I also started supplementing with both potassium and magnesium citrates, which help counteract oxalates, as does lemon water, though I don't drink that anymore. And though I recently fell off the wagon with my diet (the holidays junk food and blood testing experiments) I am generally carnivore now, so oxalates really aren't a concern anymore.

I cut back an elephant ear plant that wilted after a freeze here. After about 10 minutes, my hands and forearms began burning intensely. Washing did nothing to ease the pain. When I looked up what could possibly be happening to me, I discovered that the sap of elephant ears is ultra high in calcium oxalate. The website described the oxalates to be like microscopic needles. That description matched my agony. This has caused me to wonder why on earth I would ever knowingly ingest anything with oxilates.

I began purging oxalates about 3 months ago. Mostly carnivore during this phase, but I have an avocado once in a while. My a.m. glucose is running over 100, so I am hoping to bring this down. For a while, I thought the discharge from my eyes was oxalate related. It turns out this was actually a bacterial infection, probably picked up in my gardening. I mention it, because purging oxalates can have such a diversity of symptoms that it can be somewhat misleading.

I’ve cut out almost all greens out of my diet due to my allergy to mold. Mold/mycotoxins tend to make their toxic way into just about all foods, especially in USA, where it’s just about the worst in the world due to being unregulated. Huge improvement in my overall wellbeing. Further followed that change with cutting out all nuts, seed oils, etc. Another huge improvement. Was it just mold? Or did oxalates have something to do with it? I’m beginning to think for me it was both, but either way, cutting all these plants out of my diet improved my wellbeing and quality of life, higher energy levels, less fatigue, etc.

    1) NEVER EVER Blenderize or Pulverize High Oxalate foods before consumption!
    2) if you are going to consume a high oxalate food(which are primarily found in Vegetables) Always consume with High Calcium food such as certain cheeses and/or yogurts(calcium binds to the Oxalates in the gut and pass down through the gut instead of allowing to pass into Blood stream via gut barrier/stomach lining!
