I just received a 1896/11 from Classic Firearms. I bought it thinking it would be a missing parts/something broken type deal. My rifle came in and was spectacular with only light rust in some places. By the way it was not missing a thing, and every number matched. The stock serial number is under the barrel in the barrel channel groove.
I don't know how it made it without any serious damage. It came close though. The barrel band had the front hand guard contorted in a way that the wood wasn't meant to. All I can is that I got very lucky. Hopefully I'll get some ammo for this some day. Thanks for checking it out brother!
That box was messed up and beat and slapped around. Thank goodness the gun seemed for the most part still good. Gun looked really cool I think you provided good information for your review there is always a lot but you had some really good points. Nice Review. Another great find for your collection.
I dodged a bullet with this one. When I saw that box I just knew the rifle would be trashed but I'm so glad I was wrong about that. I tried to give as much Info as possible but there was still a lot left out. Maybe I'll do a feature length review some day. Thanks for watching brother!
The rifle survived that's all that matters to me. They did have me pretty scared and mad when I first saw the box though. Thanks for checking it out brother!
Great review buddy. Glad it wasn't seriously damaged, in shipping. The packaging sure took a pounding. Hope you get the magazine issue figured out, to your satisfaction. Nice looking overall all the age on it. Thanks for sharing brother 🤝
It's a fantastic looking rifle for the age. I mean it's over 120 years old. I got very lucky it wasn't badly damaged. The magazine had me a bit confused but I think I understand how it works now. thanks for watching my friend!
I know its almost a year late but I work at UPS. There is a very good chance that one of the trailers that your package was in had a hole in the roof. it happens a good bit.
The magazine lever has to be pressed in toward the magazine at the same time as you push it downward to remove the magazine from the rifle. The lever is angled so that to reinsert the magazine no inward force is needed - only upward.
I have two of these, and one or two of each of the other Swiss rifles in this line up to the K31 and I use the exact same cast bullet loads in all of them. I don't trim the brass any different for both of my 1889 rifles and my cast loads shoot great in all of them. I do shoot jacketed reloads in the rest of the rifles but these only get the light cast loads. I've seen people go through the trouble of trimming their brass differently for these and if you test it out and a regular length 7.5x55 piece of brass chambers fine, you don't need to bother with that. These have an incredibly generous throat due to the paper patched bullets that were used. Regular .309 sized cast bullets are what I use in mine, they shoot great and no leading. Mine are powder coated... As for the box, that was probably pee. I'm guessing you had an anti gun worker in the UPS warehouse have a REEEEEEEE fest against your box since it says "CENTURY ARMS" :)
Oh no.. so you think the UPS guy pissed on my box??? LOL. I'm not set up to reload currently but it will be something I'll be looking into in the future
To get the magazine switch to go all the way down to the 3rd position you push in on the tab, there's a recess cut out on it that can only clear when its pushed down and out of the way.
Nice review lad! Can I ask a question? I live in the UK and have the chance to purchase this rifle. However, I also have the chance to purchase a Mauser G71 from 1888, a Remington Rolling block from the 1870's or a Nepalese percussion musket? Could you please recommend which one you would pick? Thanks.
To be honest I would want all 4 lol. This is the most modern of those designs and is probable the best actual rifle. It would be hard for me turn down that G71 though.
Old South Ammo has replicated GP90 using cut down 7.5x55/GP11 brass loaded with less powder. Its expensive, but if you don't do any ammo reloading, its an option until you can get a reloading setup for GP90.
I was very lucky the box looked worse than the rifle. The next thing I'm looking to add to my Swiss collection is a K31 but those things aren't cheap anymore. Thanks for checking the video out brother!
The box damaged stinks. I’m glad you weren’t giving it as a gift. Pretty disgusting that “professionals” would handle their packages like that. You’re knowledge is impressive. Glad you were able to come up with a solution. Well done!
I'm lucky it was seriously damaged. When you have something of value shipped like this it's always a dice roll unfortunately. Thanks for watching buddy.
Most of the damage is done during the automated process at UPS, belts, diverters, and chutes are tough on loosely packaged boxes. Don't blame the human aspect of the process
It was right at 3 bills. Yeah it's a lower pressure cartridge. 7.5x53.5mm Swiss GP90. Can't find it anywhere. You pretty much have to hand load for it. Thanks for checking the video out!
From a UPS driver, I can guarantee the wetness is either from a leaky tractor trailer, or a leaking package from the facility nearest to you. The wear on the box is from rubbing, not being dropped. Looks like it got caught on a conveyor. With all that said, JG could have packed that a little better. It shouldn't be able to move at all inside the box. I'd file a claim with UPS for the damage to the bolt handle. That would piss me off as a collector
If I lived near you I'd load you up some cast loads so you can shoot this beauty. They are great shooters, just hard to shoot 'em if you don't reload or know someone who does. I've heard of people dumping part of the powder out of PPU ammo and shooting them in these as bubba "reduced loads" but I really think that's a bad idea. The throats are usually very generous and will take the full 55mm brass just fine (neither of mine need it trimmed any different from all my other Swiss rifles), but some powders can be dangerous when you cut them below suggested charges.
So I'm thinking of getting one but I'm currently deployed and my wife is back home and is 20yo would she be able to receive it for me? That is if you know
If I want to shoot it I'm going to have to start reloading. That takes time I just don't have though. Between work, RUclips, and just regular life I don't have time for anything really.
You do like the Swiss rifles. This damaged, by, UPS, Etc. , not the sender, agreed sir. Freaking wet, agreed. Shame. Good looking rifle, however. Scratches, on magazine, is expected. I will tape, and send private, what I discussed before, on Japanese rifle. No one would like, except you. LOL. There is, some damage, to the age of the rifle, it would seem. Shame on magazine catch. Odd configuration? Great piece of history. Nicely done, Peace, John.
I'm sure plenty of other people would love to hear what you have to say about a Japanese rifle. I've been in the process of building a little Swiss rifle collection. I'm n the lookout for a K31 now but they are more expensive. I'm just glad the box looked worse than the rifle lol. Thanks for watching my friend.
I can tell you right now, that is not one of our boxes. I've been with century for over 2 years now. 1. Every box we send out the door has our logo and name on the top. 2. Our boxes are not sealed like that. 3. We line our boxes with foam. If you got this from century, it must have been before 2005.
Over the past year I have made more than a few Century purchases and I've had several different box types, especially when ordering Antiques. I 100% got this from Century in the past year, ask Andrew. I'm a Century fan by the way. I can imagine it's probably a really cool company to work for. I actually just got one of the Chinese 88 rifles as well and it came in an unbranded box. Thanks for checking the video out! It's always cool to hear from someone from the industry. I have no reason to misrepresent this information. It's not like it's you guys fault the shipping carrier beat the box all to heck.

Nice review. Damaged boxes containing our "precious" always gives me heart palpatation....
I've had some messed up boxes recently. It's just a matter of time before something shows up broken.
What an absolute beaut. Great stuff, my man. I'm so glad it seems like it's in good shape after that fall.

Haha. Yeah I could imagine. I just glad nothing was broken this time.

Thanks for the info!! I'll try that next time. This was my first time putting my hands on a 1889 so I wasn't sure what I was doing.
Awesome Swiss Rifle

Serial number for stock is inside once you take it apart. Sometimes under the butt stock will be a paper-slip with the soldiers information.
I'm going to do a Troop tag video at some point

Thanks for checking it out! 👍
Rifle looks great, glad it was just the box that suffered. I have a Swiss K31, love it.😁👍

@@ReadinessReviews You're welcome Brother, good luck finding a Swiss K31.
Beautiful Gun!
It really is a looker. Thanks for watching!!
I might get this as my second ever gun
Awesome gun RR
I was so lucky it didn't break in shipping. Thanks for checking the video out!

Terrible shipping job. Holy Shit. Zero bubble wrap, Zero dunnage.
I got so lucky the rifle wasn't hurt. Thanks for checking the video out!
What was the price you paid? Didnt the 1889 Swiss use a lower powered cartridge than the K31 and 1911? Thanks for video!

Awesome rifle man I want one of those
I come towards Senioa and griffin quite a bit too so next time I do I will give you a heads up and maybe we can collaborate.
It's a really cool one. Too bad the ammo is pretty impossible to find though. Thanks for checking the video out!
For sure! Let me know.

Thought they would have taken the bolt out and bubble wrapped it and then bubble wrapped the rifle
That's the right way to do it.
How long did it take for Century to ship it?
This one was fast but the last gun I ordered from them was about 2 weeks.
@@ReadinessReviews Thanks for the fast response. I ordered one last week and was just wondering how long yours took to process and ship.

Anyone 18 or older should be fine for an antique
@@ReadinessReviews awesome! Not the hard part. Convincing her I need a new gun
Any seller should know to remove the bolt and wrap it in bubble wrap before sending through post!
That is always appreciated
Nice gun, refinished but beautful anyway. I prefer a nicely refinished gun than one in poor condition
Man, I wish it shot more modern ammo.
Get into reloading. They are a blast to shoot!

It isn't hard. Itl take gp11 with a reduced charge.
