Thanks for explaining the modern use of the term "808". Old folk like me get confused when people talk about an "808" as anything other than the drum machine sounds.
I remember making 808 kicks and toms with 3 elements - 1 osc (sine or triangle wave) & 2 envelopes (one for pitch) on a really simple modular synth sample maker in the mid 90's - It's name escapes me at the minute. There was violent tweeter nightmare in the first few attempts (think Kraftwerk blips) generating the samples on a 66Mhz CPU PC. This stopped when I dialled the pitch env way down. After that it was beef and scruff the sound up a bit and bingo!
It is amazing to think such a great piece of hardware came out so long ago and is still "Kicking":) Happy 40th bday TR808 EDIT: Also it is a pity the video is one second too long:(
I usually don’t watch Bestmaking Videos from people using other DAW‘s than the one that I use but your videos are really educational. U can learn so much
That’s a cool sounding kick drum ! You probably already know this, but an actual 808 kick drum is created by a resonant low pass filter being driven into self oscillation. Triggered by an electronic pulse and modulated by envelopes, a deep sine wave is produced with a variable attack and and sustain length. The sound is created by the filter being used as an oscillator, not a vco or sample.
You have to build all your elements around it if you want it clean, for example dont go for sounds that are going to resonating where the 808s overtones are
Perfect timing with this one! Was just getting into 808’s. Also, I’ve been wanting to mention that I’d be interested in a video on reggae/dub. Would be killer if you made a video and went over the theory, techniques, rhythms and or sounds used. For instance: “the bubble” on keys or the “dub” baseline. I don’t believe any of the elements are very technically challenging but you could spice it up by explaining how all the elements fit so well together to create the overall mix/ umami.
I love working with Simpler but I tend to gravitate toward Operator when making basses because I can add harmonics like we just saw in SubLab. Also I love how the bottoms of those shoes look like MIDI notes.
@zombiesrock61 Is that something about technology for virgins? Or is it a rather ironic indicator of the quality of education one can expect from Virginia Tech?

Got a few good tips out of this video! Thanks! 1. That sub vst looks awesome! And it's still only $40. Looks like a good solution for someone like me always struggling to get the bass to sit correctly in the mix on all notes. Generally looks fun to use too! 2. Using the dang tuner to tune the sample after messing with it. OMG. Why was I never doing this before?! I always just use the tuner for acoustic instruments. Whenever I'm doing electronic, I just face the fact" that I will have to do some of the composing by ear and that the notes might be a lie. hahaha, what a concept! Duh! I needed that. 3. Flatten in Live. I guess that is new? Back in the day I would use the resample "channel" to record on a separate track. Kind of slow. Seems like they made that a lot easier to do. I'll have to read up on that.
I forgot I had a tab open to this video. with my studio headphones at full blast I was closing the tabs I didn't need open any more and nearly had a heart attack as I hear "HEY IT"S ANDREW HUANG!!" I guess it's my fault for having good headphones. Great video, but also I'm going to have nightmares of me being chased by him, yelling "hey it's andrew Huang!" lol. Thank you for the video man

- Eight Zero Eight
- Eight o Eight

Wish he would have talked about mixing 808’s. Making them isn’t all that difficult. Making them sound clean in a mix is another story.
You have to build all your elements around it if you want it clean, for example dont go for sounds that are going to resonating where the 808s overtones are
Honestly it's really just about high passing everything so that basically the only thing taking up the lowend of the mix is your 808
