Can someone tell me what the contraption was BEFORE being retrofitted as a log splitter. I love the simplicity of the thing. Also, I have dreams of making kindling like that. I am in US, can you tell me what type of wood you are splitting? Is it green or have you allowed it to dry? It appears you struggle slightly with what looks like Oak to me. Any answers to my questions would be most appreciated and thank you for posting this video. Where are you by the way...?
Hallo Warddan! I live in Sweden. The splitter is mainly composed of parts from scrapped farming and logging machines. The spring is from a Volvo car. In the video I split green birch and oak and, in the end of the video, dry sallow. The oak in the video is unfortunately a bit cross-grained. Normally oak is hard but nevertheless good to split. Birch and sallow are both very good to split. All the time I try to improve the splitter, you can see at ruclips.net/video/AxjguFuMA5o/видео.html and read www.pidia.se/ingmarsklyv.html how it works today. Just these days I'm working out how to stop the dangerous swinging of the axe when I release the handle.
Looks faster than an expensive gas splitter. Heading to scrap yard now.

I think you what you mean is that the Russian Woodpecker is easier to use than to swing an axe.

I think the biggest danger is to his left thumb, and I'm not really sure him holding the wood serves much purpose.

Looks like walnut to me, the ones with the dark heartwood. If it is, it's a real waste to use it for firewood.

The head weighs 83 lbs when spring is taken away.
