That 178 grain load at over 1900 in a 20" barrel looks like it would do just fine on deer and bear. Most 170 grain soft point factory loads don't barely break 2000 in reality anyway and they work just fine.

*THAT OLD LYMAN 1600 FPS MicroGroove speed limit predates Lyman's Black Super Moly Lube. They were using the older version of Orange Magic 'Wax' lube... without Molybdenum Disulfide... "Moly" is some super slick stuff and Lyman did not use it...way back then. So, MOLY lubed or Moy coated cast lead vs. Microgrooves may not have ever been professionally tested by a published expert. For future testing you might want to consider this 'seldom considered' fact. Sometimes that which was not tested can be more interesting than that which was tested.*

Shooting Hardcast bullets in “ANY MARLIN” is not PLUG and PLAY! There needs to be work in getting the needed accuracy!
#1 Rule. “FILL THE THROAT” that means your bullet needs to be .002 Thousandth bigger than the Throat diameter!
When this happens, the filled Throat will Swage the bullet to “FILL” the bore! So you need a Chamber cast to accurately measure the Throat!
#2 If your rifle has less then 200 rounds of Jacketed fired through it, it needs to be LAPPED OR FIRELAPPED! Before lapping, deep clean with a Foaming Bore cleaner, several times, “ALL” Copper fowling needs to be removed! All Marlins in there barrels have restrictions from Stampings, Dovetails, blind screws, Tooling marks, etc!
#3 get the right sized Hardcast bullets! From the casting, you now know the correct bullet size!
#4 do your load work! If you have a 444 with the 1-38 MicroGroove then very top end loads in velocities will be required! Essential for any bullets over 270gr, in either Hardcast or Jacketed!
