I just watched this for what I believe to be the 128,956th time and I still think this is the best thing on you tube. This and James Brown on the TAMI show.
Before The Germs, X, and Black Flag, The Go Go's there was the Screamers. I started going to punk shows in 1979 as a young 15-year-old and sadly missed seeing them. Every night in LA back then there were 6-8 shows every night, yes every night !! The Screamers gigs were stories of legend.
So I honestly have been studying music academically and listened to it for a long time. And there are truly many great vocalists and lead singers out there in the music world. But honestly tomata du plenty has to be up there on my top 5 favorite. Now I'm not saying he had the best vocals or best sounding vocals of all time. But you can't deny the man's raw energy and total vibe and oneness with that high energy sound lol. I love it. And I think it's kinda cool they didn't sign to any record company when they could have easily. Kind of sticking it to the man and playing what you want in a way
@@SgtShakenBake gen xers and younger boomers who were vehemently anti-new wave. i would also say virtually all hardcore kids balk if you load in a keyboard at a gig.
@@Mikeymanza1Those EP's are all 'after the fact' bootleg releases of audio taken from videos like this one. The Screamers were dead set against recording and releasing records. Their intention was to be 100% a media-art presentation.
@@InfiniteRhombus Yep, and it's really too bad. I totally get that they were trying to do something completely different at the time, but I think if they had at least put out a few proper singles they would have made a much larger impact outside of L.A.
I was fortunate to see them at the Whiskey. It was the most powerful 1/2 hour I've ever seen and heard. I managed to climb a telephone pole after the show and nab a poster advertising the show. I just gave it to one of my best friends. He's the only person in Detroit where I live now to know about them.
Hell yea the double synths, amazing. I found out about this band due to a podcast called No Dogs in Space, shout out to Marcus Parks. Worth a listen. I'm a huge punk fan and am embarrassed I just found out about them
The greatest band to never release an record. They wanted it to be absolutely perfect, and before they thought it would be, they broke up. And had added a female vocalist and I think a horn player and completely changed their sound. We only have this from Target Video and a few demos. Let that be a lesson - record that shit, even if you don’t think it’s perfect!
Seems like I read an article lately that had the Screamers waiting on the majors to come calling with big money as opposed to any DIY ethics or preference for video. Too bad they broke up right before the underground was about to establish itself to an extent that it could have supported them via gigs and indie distros. Punk in those days was still seen as a commodity...sometimes even to the bands themselves.
Such an awesome video. I'm almost positive Tomata was speeding. But who in the LA punk scene wasn't speeding? It's a major reason we get such energetic, completely insane performances out of them.
Tomata influenced so many... but the one people always seem to miss is that hissing hentchman in 'Escape From New York' that dresses up Donald Pleasance in a Barbie wig. That guy had to have been inspired by Tomata.
i remember i was looking for a punk band that had keys for inspiration to make a band as a middle schooler and came across the screamers. loved them ever since.
They are so weird and yet I find myself extremely fascinated. I listened to them a while back but never saw any pictures or music videos. I must admit, they are a strange bunch. I love it.
I've often wondered if the whole Pee Wee persona was inspired by Tomata. It's not out of the question, since Paul Reubens used to hang out in the early L.A. punk scene. I think Pee Wee was introduced in '79, so the timing would be perfect.
Screamers ovat vitun mahtava bändi! Olen niin iloinen nähdessäni tämän videon. Kiitos lähettämistä tämän mahtava kappale liikaa. Olen iloinen, he eivät ojensi studioalbumi, se olisi tuhonnut raaka ääni, että he ovat legendoja siitä
la música es hermosa, nunca deja de darte sorpresas. Descubrir bandas nuevas como the coneheads y después descubrir bandas viejas como the screamers me hace feliz.
Yep. Jello has said as much in several interviews. There's footage on youtube of a '78 Screamers gig at the Mabuhay in SF, where you can clearly see a young Jello in the crowd completely mesmerized and taking mental notes.
That's an amazing guitar sound from a Wurli. I'de heard these fellas 'back in the day' but never knew they used keys, NEVER. I missed out cuz if he was that much a spazz on film he must have been more epileptic than Ian Curtis on stage.
I swear synth-punk artists are some the most uncultured artists out there. I have never seen an artist look so confident wailing around in a clown looking outfit while voice cracking into the mic. That's why i love synthpunk, its like the social outcast of punk music and i love social outcasts
Yea, that's it. Punk, as I remembered it in the mid-late 70's. Fun, light with a sense of humor. Then the Hardcore hijacked it and poisoned the village drinking water. Screamers were always fun & unpredictable...
One of the best frontmen in punk. I was into Dead Kennedys before I discovered The Screamers, Jello Biafra’s stage presence makes more sense after seeing Tomata Du Plenty as Biafra cited The Screamers as an influence.
THIS is punk! what a way to say fuck you to the mainstream rock at that particular time by tossing away the bass and guitar. fuck not knowing how to play the instrument, don't play the instrument AT ALL!!! great stuff.

birdy1numnum I just watched the James brown show you’re referring to and nothing comes close to the awesomeness of that video.

If you ever seen the movie that Tomata stars in called Population: 1 then you'll probably rank him higher as musician and maybe even an artist.
They originally wanted their first album to be a collection of music videos like this.
The Screamers really were ahead of their time.
Ambrose Martinez amazingly said 🤜🤛🏼
Used to see them ALL the time. They were the best punk band in L.A.
This is so undisputibly punk, and with no guitars?? respect!
Who says you need a guitar to be punk?
@@SgtShakenBake gen xers and younger boomers who were vehemently anti-new wave. i would also say virtually all hardcore kids balk if you load in a keyboard at a gig.
Saying they were way ahead of their time, is a huge understatement.

Man...
Look at him go.
Crazy how these guys never released a record
its depressing, all of their songs were incredible and the only versions we have are in such shitty quality
A few EPs

Will be releasing a record in March. Pre-Order is going now.
hes crazy with his lil suspenders and tight pants and bow tie! I love him. Hes adorable
The faces man... the faces!!
Scruffy P a young Jim carrey! haha
you know where goldwaith got his posture from
I love his facial expressions and his dancing.
I know. Made me bust out laughing.
If I was to choose only one video to give a perfect "explanation" what Punk was, I´d probably take this one.

been trying to replicate the little dance he does at 2:24 for years now. it's maddening
Damn you ..now my downstairs neighbors are gonna hate me more....im learnin this shit
coolandimpressive ME TOO
Tomata's little signature dance from "Punish Or Be Damned" is the one thing that made me decide to be a frontman.
No point, it was a personal expression. It is unique to the soul of the dancer.
A worthwhile endeavor
Dont' know how I missed this all these years. Absolutely F*ing brilliant.
Tomata du Plenty was a great artist as well!
Funny bit of random trivia: David Lee Roth of all people owns a large collection of Tomata's paintings.

Why is this video better then anything today? Because they keep the camera on the band and its not filled with a million cuts. Pure, simple, classic!
This band was a great inspiration for the forming of Dead Kennedys
A great inspiration for Jello's vocal stylings and stage presence at least.
screamers ARE great. hope to see/hear more stuff like this.
cheers from roma. giorgio baldi
One of my absolute favorite LA punk bands.
This sounds like a hardcore band from 82 but this is sometime in the 70’s these guys were way ahead of their time
Such an awesome video. I'm almost positive Tomata was speeding. But who in the LA punk scene wasn't speeding? It's a major reason we get such energetic, completely insane performances out of them.
I don't know about the Screamers, but LSD was extremely popular in the early L.A. punk scene.
Catchier than anything on Devo's debut, they would have been similarly successful had they been recorded. Great band.
Tomata influenced so many... but the one people always seem to miss is that hissing hentchman in 'Escape From New York' that dresses up Donald Pleasance in a Barbie wig. That guy had to have been inspired by Tomata.
Woke up this morning, face all scarred, oh my god, did I go too far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The energy here is so incredible. They are so tight too. How they never released anything is a mystery.
Damn the Screamers make me proud to be from LA!
Target's Released this as "Extras" on a DVD. You all should pick it up... so good. I wish they'd put them all out on DVD.
