    I’ve been waiting for YEARS for a video like this. I have my bachelors in graphic design and own a graphic design studio. I’ve been back and forth about offering art therapy along side my other digital services but froze each time when I think about going back to school, sigh* thank you sister.

    Thank you so much, i really needed to hear this message. Looking forward to more videos on non-clinical therapeutic art practice. Your video reminded me that sometimes formal education and certifications can be a form of colonialism, and we don't necessarily need to rely on certifications, and can honour our ancestral knowledge.
    Just today i had an emotional breakdown because the art therapy certification program I had enrolled in, which was about to start in a few weeks, got postponed to the next year. I was desperately waiting to complete this certification so that I can start offering therapeutic art sessions. Your video gave me hope that I can still start with what i know, through my innate wisdom, and later hone it through the certification.

      I'm sorry to hear that happened, it must be hard especially when you've looked forward to it. But I'm glad to hear that this gave you permission to do what you can at the moment to serve and live aligned with your purpose :)

    Thank you for making this video! I really needed to hear this. Art is so healing. School can be stressful and expensive but you really made me challenge my ideas on how necessary degrees and certifications are in order to help people heal.

    This was absolutely helpful. Thank you for helping me to understand that healing through art and helping others do the same is legitimate and necessary. Thank you

    Amazing video Youhjung! I love how you spoke about the 'informal' history of art therapy. Truly, art has been used for centuries as a means to understand ourselves and the world around us. And while it may not have been clinically studied until recently, it has been used therapeutically since forever. So I love how you connected that to non-clincial work, because anyone can practice therapeutic art. As long as your intentions are for the good, you're good 💖

    Thank you so much for this video, it just popped up on my feed and I will watch it later! I am a licensed professional counselor who became an artist several years ago and I’ve been just recently in the last week and a half struggling with how to incorporate art Into sessions in a therapeutic way. This is perfect.

    Thank you for making this! This was so helpful. I have been trying to figure this out for awhile because I want to use my psychology degree, music skills (my other passion) & years of experience in mental health offering rehabilitative services to help people while making additional income, but another degree is not an option for me right now. Maybe in the future, but not now. But this was so helpful, thank you!

    You resonate with my thinking. As I'm dealing with my own challenges, I see my self working on myself before helping others through art
    I am a self taught artist with ability to guide learners of art

    Could you be a licensed professional counselor who incorporates therapeutic art?

    • @contempl8ive
      @contempl8ive 7 месяцев назад

      Yes! It would be the same as facilitating an arts-based process in any other current profession that you might already be working in. I am a registered clinical counselor in Canada, with a diploma in art therapy and have colleagues who do not have art therapy accreditation, yet who sometimes use art making with their clients to help them express themselves emotionally and creatively. Making art by itself is not regulated, in Canada, thankfully. It is free for anyone to participate in. When you are a counselor who is registered and abides by their regulatory association, you have some of the same therapeutic skills and knowledge that art therapists also learn in their degree program. That being said, a licensed or registered art therapist is additionally trained in safety considerations relevant to art making and art materials that could potentially impact clients in both beneficial and cautionary ways. This is why it is now a profession that has become regulated by various governing bodies around the world and why there are accredited art therapy schools.

    Could someone do therapeutic non-clinical art for a career without having a counseling/therapy/psychology degree and career background? I have a bachelor's in social work and a JD, but never pursued those careers because I found they would be too stressful for me. I really love the arts and the idea of using art to help others and connect with people/create community is something that really resonates with me, however I don't know if it would be possible for me to facilitate this without going back for another degree in art therapy/MSW/etc.

    Hi, I am a Develoment Communication graduate. But I do not work as a development communicator. I work as an educator. During this pandemic, a lot of our learners are having mental issues and suffer so much stress. Even I suffer from stress. I want to offer them "art therapy", but I am not really good in art. With words, can trust myself but when it comes to painting, drawing and the like I never trust myself. 🤣🤣Can I possibly still ofer art therapy even if I am only good with words? I can interpret drawings and paintings though.

    • @ThirstyForArt
      @ThirstyForArt  2 года назад +2

      You can offer space for people to make art, though you likely cannot offer 'art therapy' per se because it is a protected title/practice in some states in the u.s. which means that you'd need certain license or background to provide art therapy.
      Make sure to watch the video - you can choose to instead offer expressive art or therapeutic art facilitation and I explain this in there :)
      But to answer your question, you don't have to be a master in painting/drawing or a professional artist to guide people in therapeutic art-making.

    U dont need art therapy course to be one. U need to have confidence to not need external validation from others of your own capabilities.

    Doing art as therapy is unethical. Art therapists are trained to respond to client's emotional responses.
