    Another great experiment. Youve for sure risen to the top as my favorite home mycolgy content creator. This gave me some ideas for a similar project im planning for my garden. Im on a slope and I am planning some replacing some 1' high log retaining walls for terraces with mushroom logs set in the ground vertically. Obviously these will have to get switched out every few years but its small enough that its no more than a days work every few years. Would like to use smaller logs, probably 6-8" diameter, 2' long. I have a bunch of black and yellow totes i can incubate the logs in. Gonna give that a try anyway

      That would be awesome, if you did shiitake or reishi on a strong hardwood like oak, you should be able to get four years out of them. Actually, doing hemlock reishi logs as posts might be cool too. I know hemlock is pretty rot resistant.

      Yep, lots of oak where I live so thats what I'll be using most. There are different microclimates in different parts of the yard, so right now thinking shiitakes in shadier parts, reshi and turkey tail in the sunnier parts shaded by garden plants. The wood chips paths already have stropharia

    Always enjoy your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I tried oyster on box elder logs and some on white oak logs. The box elder seems to be a better fit this go around. I will have to try reishi totem. Thanks again from north central arkansas, trout capital of the world

    Bucket totem is an intriguing idea, especially for me who constantly fails with logs because they get too hot and dry even in the shade where I am
    Buckets are extremely underutilized and I'm not really sure why. They're less than ideal in certain environments, but I've had great luck just pouring boiling water into HWFP and then innoculating when room temp

      If your in a dry area, which I definitely am at certain times, they key is putting them somewhere where you will see them and not forget to water them. Watering is really important to success in log grows and a lot of people don't realize that.

    Excellent, thanks for sharing! I haven’t tried reishi yet but currently experimenting with maitake and chicken of the woods. Colonization looking nice so far. I did put my small logs in the PC before spawning them, but I’m not sure that’s really required. Will try without next time. What do you think of older logs (like the ones cut last winter, 6months old or so)? Are they still worth experimenting with? I get it that they’re drier, but I could soak them a day or two in the stream nearby prior to inoculation. After all hard wood fuel pellets are not so fresh themselves, right? Then there is the increased risk of the logs being colonized already by another wild mycelium, but I’ll give it a try. Reishi spawn is not difficult to grow anyway so I can risk some for the sake of mushroom cultivation science :)

      You can try it but yeah it's likely that they've already been partially colonized by other fungi at the that point. I know Field & Forest has had good success PCing their small log chunks with maitake and chickens and that is what they recommend. They're a good company, they know their stuff.

    I just found some Hemlock Reishis this last weekend. I cut a clone, but it's slow to show any movement. I'm interested in seeing how this experiment turns out!

      Me too, thanks. Mine did pretty well on agar, but I notice it being a little slower on grain and sawdust than other Reishi strains I've played with.

      @@RenegadeMushrooms I haven't yet put your Reishi strains to do agar/bulk. I've been meaning to, and will do so soon. Hopefully the rock as hard the Blue Oyster.

    How do you tell when bags are ready to be put into fruiting conditions? I have bags fully colonized just don't want to set them before it's time.

      Are you talking about removing incubation bags from totem logs, or are you talking about sawdust substrate bags?

      Wanted to try it without it to see how they would do. Spawn on top seemed to dry out a bit though, so it's probably better to use it.
