- How did the BOM get our long-range weather forecast so wrong in Australia
They predicted drought we have had so much rain here in Byron Shire's east coast N.S.W Australia.
People were worried about bushfires, but we have been having minor flooding instead!

We got a freaking tornado on the Gold Coast on Boxing Day! BOM didn’t even have a severe storm warning out! The government refused to declare a disaster zone and very minimal media coverage about the event!!
Yes, I have friends who are following this stuff, and it was predicted by Independent forecasters. So sad for you and everyone.
Yes! After it hit, I looked up Higgins storm chasers and they had given a warning a few days before but nothing from the BOM

It’s funny how they are so confident of predicting the weather for 100 or 1000 years but cannot predict it for the next day.

Up here in central QLD they have been giving us severe weather warnings due to rain.

Apart from getting it wrong more times than right they dramatize weather reports also way too often. Too many severe weather warnings for essentially a common old thunderstorm. I could speculate why but it's probably a number of factors at play but seriously if the guys at BOM were footballers they'd be all sitting on the bench for the season. 😂
Benched, that's true. Actually the independent guys are getting closer forecasts hmmmm?
How much praise to the meteorologists get when they get it right, Mart? This is an inexact science, and probably will be for quite while yet.

Your personal long range forecast for you Marty is warm sunshine on the gardens most days with the chance of some clouds and rain with gusty wind sometimes or just a pleasant sea breeze. And for the wave forecast well you never know unless you go.

Come to North Queensland. We have had the same weather man for 20+yrs and his favourite saying used to be ‘severe thunderstorms or otherwise fine’🤦♂️🤦♂️
Americans can have their weather reports almost down to the minute. Yet our government has allowed weather sites that have put many people in serious danger like ‘Willy Weather’🍺🍺

It's easy to be critical of someone when you aren't in the game yourself.
I do have a fair understanding of reading the weather, it was a unit in Agri-Business at college. I had to predict the seasons ahead when I managed the Avo farm. I followed other weather predictions from independents and they were more on the money. Sorry, but as one of the other commenters said "If it was a footy match they would be on the bench!
Being a gardener of any sort means you ARE in the game.
When we got the original forecast for drought, then it flipped to a big wet season my spidey senses told me some fuckery was developing and here we are 🤷🏻♂️
Every.now.and then they will het it wrong. Such is the nature of any weather forecasting, especially lomg range. This is even more to be expected in the context of changing. Climate patterns
The independents did much better forecasts and so did Weather co from New Zealand
Yeah, we were meant to get rain but looks like you got it instead.
The BOM do their best throwing sticks in the air and see how they land.
The weather is an untameable beast, and the BOM try their best.
